I've been playing around with reverse tie-dying and having mixed feelings with the outcomes. So I sought out videos on TH-cam to refine my techniques and tips from other tie-dye enthusiasts. Your video is by far the most helpful I've watched so far! Thank you for making a video that is informative and not just a rehashing of someone else's DIY video that was a remaking of another person's DIY idea they saw was trending. Your tips are tried and true methods from the artists themself. Thank you! 😊
Wow so Kind! I appreciate it! Learned most everything from other creators here on TH-cam that take their time to share information for free, just wanted to pass my own tips and tricks along as well :)
Thanks for the video, it's really informative and helpful! Quick question, do you think pre-soaking the shirt in soda wash before bleaching it could be helpful as opposed to sprinkling it on after rinsing out the bleach? Or would it be basically the same result?
I added it after rinsing because I did not want the bleach to negate the effects of the soda ash. Worth a shot but my guess would be the results are not as saturated. I tried washing the shirt after bleach then soaking in soda ash and dyeing but re-spiraling the shirt meant the dye didn't saturate the bleached parts as well.
I’m pretty new to tie-dyeing, can blue and purple rit also work like the blue and purple dye you had? Not looking for the same exact thing but just curious if those colors actually show up using rit and bleach
you can do a full soak in the soda ash, you just need to neutralize with peroxide between steps, this will also save you the time of rinising the bleach out. I also do a stronger ratio of soda ash to water, because the shirts already wet from the neutralizing solution, which would dilute the soda solution.
Thank you for sharing this very informative video,I am making my twin sister a reverse tie-dye for our 58th B-Day(it was on 11/11)I want to do one that really pops ,any suggestions?
Hi, Tammy! Happy belated! I would suggest picking two or more colors on the color wheel. I've had a lot of success with pink and magenta. Rainbow is always cool too!
Hi, just tried your process again this time using hydrogen prox soak for 20 minutes then rinse as you indicated. I also sprinkled the SA on still spiraled shirt before adding liquid dyes. Will wait 24+ hours to batch. Question.... Did you final wash on cold or hot water??
im so glad i come across your video today..ive been trying to r tie dye few times..your way of doing is the most easy process that make sence.thank you again.....
I tried your process and loved the outcome. I used turquoise on top of the bleached spiral and it is beautiful. Have you ever done a white t-shirt to get pastel colors?
So glad to hear it! I've done plenty of white shirts but never pastel colors. I would start by mixing the dye to 1/4 strength and see if that gets you what you're looking for
@@TFJ70 Yep, one thing to note is that the dye will bleed significantly on a white shirt so you can't afford to be as generous with the dye, ESPECIALLY if you want to keep white spaces. Hey DYE TRYING, love your video! Very useful content and very informative. I did have a question though, other videos recommend a hydrogen peroxide bath to deactivate the bleach. I notice you just do a thorough rinse instead. Have you experimented with the peroxide bath method and if so what are you thoughts on that method? Thank you in advance for any response you have!
You need to neutralise the bleach or you will get holes in the shirt at a later date, I know this as it has happened to me when I first started doing reverse dyes a few years ago, I thought it was because I was using cheap t shirts, now Know it was the bleach that caused them.
I have a concert shirt from years ago that stained around the collar the first time it was washed ($35 down the drain) but I've been thinking about bleach dying so I can actually wear it...it has a pretty thick screened logo in the middle on the front.
@@damurphy717 You could go light on the bleach so the contrast is still there or you could section off the logo and the area around it and avoid bleaching there altogether
The smallest size is plenty to get started, you can get 10+ shirts from it and try out different colors. Once you find you’re using that color a lot then upgrade to the bigger sizes!
I noticed you didn't use hydrogen peroxide as a bleach neutralizer. Some others have done this. Do you think it worked out for you because you just rinsed the bleach out super well? Do you think it would be okay to try the hydrogen peroxide as long as I rinse the bleach well and keep it untied?? Thanks
Shirt came out great but I would have stopped the bleaching action with a quick soak in a water/peroxide solution 70/30. I also would have soaked in the water/soda ash mixture not sprinkled the powder, and used Urea in my dye mix. Other than that I ike your design very much.
Hey thank you Majik! From my experience I've had issues with muddy colors after soaking the shirt in both the peroxide and soda ash mixture and found this way works best for me. Although I've been hearing this comment a lot so I may have to try again!

Most people soak it, I tried that but ended up with far duller dyes. Putting it on top worked way better for me but I may have done something incorrectly with the soak 🤷
It can be helpful to check the pH to make sure there's enough soda ash in the water. I believe it's supposed to be over 11. Most people I've seen use 1-1.5 cups per gallon to get the pH up.
