Those stats again - if all working girls came from Isan (about 1/3 do in reality) and half those parents know. That’s less than 3% of parental involvement.

@@ArchiBiH interested to know more, where is the data point from?
Below are mine. 6% is based on if every single working girl across Thailand came from Isan, which they don't. Anything under 50% of a population is a minority so my conclusion would probably still stand. Though still interested to know more on those moving in and out.. The issue is not "if they have at some point done sex work" it is if their parents send them to do it as the commenter suggests. I suggest it would be mathematically impossible for the majority of isan parents to do this with the current data on number of sex workers vs population of Isan.
Global Slavery Index (2020): Estimated 500,000 people involved in the sex industry in Thailand. Source: Global Slavery Index 2020 by Walk Free Foundation.
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC): Estimated 123,530 sex workers in Thailand in 2008. Source: UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, 2009.
Thailand Ministry of Social Development and Human Security: Estimated 123,530 to 147,080 sex workers in Thailand in 2014. Source: Thailand Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, as reported by UNAIDS.
Thailand has approximately 250,000 sex workers in 2024. This figure is sourced from the International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW) and is consistent across various reports, including those by The Thaiger and The Star (Thaiger) (The Star).
Just some food for thought when running the numbers based on turnover
      Hypothetical Calculation:
      Assumptions:
Let’s assume the average career duration in sex work is 5 years.
We will consider a 20-year period to estimate the turnover and total involvement.
If there are currently 250,000 sex workers, and the average career is 5 years, we can estimate a complete turnover every 5 years.
Over 20 years, this means 4 cycles of turnover (20 years / 5 years per cycle).
The cumulative number of individuals involved might be 250,000 * 4 = 1,000,000.
If we assume that a significant portion, say 50%, of sex workers come from Isan, this would be 500,000 women over 20 years.
Female Population of Isan: 11 million
      Estimated Lifetime Involvement: 500,000
      Percentage of Isan Women Involved at Some Point: (500,000 / 11,000,000) * 100 ≈ 4.5%
      Analysis and Conclusion:
Even with the assumption that 50% of all sex workers in Thailand come from Isan and considering turnover over a 20-year period, the percentage of women from Isan who have ever been involved in sex work is approximately 4.5%.

@@thenakedguru I was pointing out that your 6% is for currently working and from that you conclude that only say half 3% parents would know. If you were to estimate all the s. workers that are no longer active it would be higher than 6% and therefore more than 3% parents would know. Why only 5 year career why not 15, why only 20 year cycle not 60 and then divide by 11m including grandmothers?

    • @thenakedguru
      @thenakedguru  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@ArchiBiH Changing these metrics this is what we get
      Population of Isan:
      Approximately 11 million females.
      Sex Workers in Thailand:
      Estimated at 250,000.
      Previous Assumptions:
Cycle Duration: Previously, we considered a 20-year cycle.
Career Duration: We assumed an average career duration of 5 years.
      Revised Calculation:
Cycle Duration: Now, let's consider a 60-year cycle.
Career Duration: We maintain the assumption of a 15-year average career duration.
      Analysis:
      Cumulative Involvement:
With a 15-year average career duration and a 60-year cycle, there would be 4 complete cycles (60 years / 15 years per cycle).
Over these 4 cycles, assuming a constant turnover rate, the cumulative number of sex workers would still be:
      250,000 * 4 = 1,000,000 sex workers.
      Proportion from Isan:
Assuming 50% of all sex workers come from Isan, this results in:
      50% of 1,000,000 = 500,000 sex workers from Isan over 60 years.
      Comparison with Isan Population:
Total female population in Isan: 11 million.
Estimated lifetime involvement from Isan: 500,000.
      Percentage Calculation:
      (500,000 / 11,000,000) * 100 ≈ 4.5%
      Explanation:
The reason the percentage remains around 4.5% in both scenarios (20-year cycle with 5-year career vs. 60-year cycle with 15-year career) is due to the proportional relationship between the estimated number of sex workers and the total female population in Isan. The calculation of lifetime involvement essentially divides the estimated number of sex workers from Isan (over the specified period) by the total female population of Isan.
Changing the cycle duration (20 years to 60 years) primarily impacts the total cumulative number of sex workers over time, but since we are calculating a percentage relative to the total population, and assuming a constant turnover rate, the percentage of females involved in sex work remains stable around 4.5%.
      Conclusion:
The consistency in the percentage reflects the relative scale of the estimated number of sex workers compared to the total female population in Isan. This underscores the implausibility of the claim that 44% of females in Isan are involved in sex work, as it would require a vastly higher number of sex workers relative to the entire population, which is not supported by the available data.
so to the point of this accumulating and the living parents that would know
      Cumulative Involvement:
We estimated approximately 500,000 women from Isan would be involved in sex work over a 60-year period.
      Parental Awareness:
Half of the parents are assumed to be aware of their children's involvement in sex work over this period.
      Current Timeframe:
We'll consider the current point in time within this 60-year period to determine how many parents would currently be living and aware.
      Calculation Steps:
      Cycle Duration and Career Span:
Assuming a 15-year average career duration, over 60 years, there would be 4 cycles of turnover (60 years / 15 years per cycle).
      Cumulative Involvement:
Total number of women involved in sex work over 60 years: 500,000.
      Aware Parents Currently:
Calculate the number of parents who would currently know about their children's involvement based on cumulative involvement and assuming half are aware.
      Calculation:
      Number of Aware Parents Currently:
From previous calculations, over 60 years and assuming half of the parents are aware:
      Number of parents who would currently know ≈ 500,000 * 0.5 = 250,000 parents.
      Conclusion:
Based on these assumptions and calculations, approximately 250,000 parents in Isan would currently be living and aware of their children's involvement in sex work, assuming a 15-year average career duration and a 60-year period with half of the parents being aware.
      Estimating Total Parents:
If we assume an average family size and distribution, we might estimate roughly:
Total number of parents ≈ Total population / 2 (assuming an average of 2 parents per household).
      Total number of parents ≈ 22,000,000 / 2 = 11,000,000 parents.
      Percentage Calculation:
Percentage of parents who would currently know:
      (250,000 / 11,000,000) * 100 ≈ 2.27%
      Conclusion:
Based on these assumptions and calculations, approximately 2.27% of the total Isan population of parents would currently know about their children's involvement in sex work.
am still interested in the source for 44% as that may change the whole thesis. Cheers

You have done well again explaining the subject of Thai prostitution to your audience. Many foreigners only experience the bar/massage scene in the popular tourist resorts, but how many are aware of the local approach and how their needs are catered for. Just about every larger village upwards can offer the local populace (men) "girls for sale". The venues are usually cheap, and rooms are sold by the hour. Many have A/C with hot and cold water. Some have theme rooms and are decked out quite tastefully. If you arrive by car or motorbike, you make your choice of room and an usher takes you there, will open the door turn on the A/C then pull a heavy curtain in front of the room so nobody from the outside can see your vehicle or number plate. It is a slick and professional operation frequented almost entirely by Thai men. Whilst working girls are not usually on the premises, should you require one a quick phone call from reception can soon fix that. When you have lived in the kingdom for a long time you begin to realize that prostitution has been part of the culture for time immemorial. Actually, it is not usual for the average Thai person to either look down or have a blighted of opinion toward girls who choose to do this work. In their minds (Thai) it is just another job to make some money for the family.
So PLEASE don't look down on sex workers or think badly of them. They are human beings just the same as everybody else but often have to put up with a lot more in the workplace than others >>>

She's 22 years younger and lives with me in California. Brought her daughter here as well to go to college. She works and enjoys it. America is a great place to make money if you're not afraid to work. I pay all the bills she saves and sends money back. Everyone is happy 🙏

Great video! It really got me thinking. Your point about parents focusing on their child's effort to help out, regardless of the profession, hit home. Sure, some parents know and some don’t, but only a tiny fraction actually push their kids into certain jobs. We, in the West, are quick to judge without understanding. At the end of the day, how a family supports itself is their business, not ours. We need to focus on our own lives and not be so quick to judge others.

Its a class thing mate, you are middle class and wont be close to those families and they would see you as wealthier than them and would be embarrassed to say such things driven from poverty, i am a broke ass workingclass scumbag single dad, nearly every woman i know in the village went at least once to make money, including my extended family, and some are just village famous treacherous kha li......parents dont say go work in the sex industry, they say the family has no money, we are old and now you have a baby no husband, you can leave the baby with us and you go make money....the daughter decides going to Pattaya or Phuket is the quickest route to baht.

After living in Thailand I do know for sure that girls from villages do recruit other girls to work at the same bar. I would lean to what your wife % of parents know what their daughters are doing.. I speak Thai and noticed that a lot of the girls often come from the same village or province or where friends before. I have often met the mother working in the same bar as her daughter. Like you mentioned it can become a generational occupation. Sometime you see mothers bring their young daughters to the bars, the child isn't working but grows up seeing their mother working in a bar. It becomes the norm, the kids are very young, as young as 4 to 5 years old. It is the mind set of some families to encourage their daughters to go out and find a farang husband. It has become a standard joke amongst some Thai people. Though often it's said as jokingly, there is a lot of truth behind it.

Firstly I really enjoy your channel 👍
I guess people draw this conclusion if they only go to Bangkok or Pattaya and see that so many bar girls are from Issan. What they don’t comprehend is that it’s Thailand’s largest region and so statistically you will always see more people from the region in any entertainment industry (be that genuine waitress / cashier / bar girl) than elsewhere. And so the natural (wrong) conclusion is that people from these poorer regions are forced into this industry.
It is a far more complicated subject - as you say, some do this in the hope of meeting a good farang and having a better life. Some out of desperation after coming to the big city and having no other option. And (by far the fewest my opinion) some do this as they want the easy option to keep themselves / their boyfriend in yabba.
Too many farang are too quick to stereotype based on limited experience

Please understand how increasingly hard it is for a Thai farming family to produce income from the farm. The reality is a working girls income is the easiest and highest way to support the family unit on the farm. My experience is to watch newbie workers following those who visit home and offer assistance to get started. I have never seen parents push their kids into this, but remain silent when the girls volunteer to become a high income source for the family and are "chaperoned" to get started.

A vast proportion of families believe their children are working in the restaurant which was the case many years ago. Society is changing and most parents have no problem with this work as the family will be taken care of.
People are against drugs but many Thais make money from the crystal meth and many have no problem with the money to be made
Your talk was good. I actually could relate to the stories. Some girls do the work so they can help a sick family member too. Many get into debt with a loan shark demanding 20% each month and sex work is a way of hoping to pay the debt. Obviously many hope to meet a farang. Actually thai men have met a rich lady farang. People always think it is thai girls that get with a farang. I know several thai men who have rich farang wives.
Good discourse. I would say your wife is more correct. 50%.

I think you are doing a good job.
It is not easy to try to explain a complex situation to people who in many cases have preconceived ideas.
My experience is that 90% of the girls who have left school in Issarn go to other places to work.
Given that they are conservatively brought up and shy, most end up in factories or construction sites..
But a few also in the nightlife scene.
Some manage well and come home with the love of their life, and others take on problems that they got through their career choice.
but even those who have remained in the villages are not always problem-free. There are drugs and boyfriends with an alternative lifestyle even in the villages.
On the whole, I think you're right.

That's the right perspective and proper use of statistics unfortunately I don't know if you have done this or not but bloggers make generalizations and videos based on generalizations. For example, I saw a video stating 10 reasons on why I left the US for the Philippines. One was in the US they don't care about old people and they don't have family values. The vlogger divorced in the US and left his wife and children in the US and left abandoning his children and then said he is leaving because of his belief in strong family values. People use gross generalizations as excuses to do what they want to do.

A few observations based on my experience regarding this....
    1. The general attitude towards sex in Thailand is much more open and liberal than most westeners might know.
    2. In rural areas, jobs and income are very hard to come by for the majority of the public. It's common for the kids of working age to send money back home to support aging parents and the house needs to be supported. It just is what it is. Most Thai's that i am around can't really afford a university degree.
    3. The night life scene is typically about companionship just as much as it is sex. Many ladies I am aware of look to develop extended relationships with "clients" they meet. Quality over Quantity.
    4. The negative view of sex workers really needs to change. It's the world's oldest profession and there is a massive demand for this type engagement. That is not going to change anytime soon. I find that Thai's do "entertainment" with a unique style and flair. I have many good friends in the nightlife scene in Bkk. There are some good people out there.

Where I would draw the line on my judgement would be if it were to support a drug habit or criminal activities that harm others. Young ladies do it here in Australia to finance their university studies and then go on to a professional career in their chosen studies. Rural communities have les 0:30 s opportunities and it gives them a level of financial support. It is like any
market, supply and demand and the Thai girls are very good at it. All I would say is buyer beware and enjoy the experience and if it concerns you don’t go there.

What I mean by this, is even if the parents get a large amount of money from their daughter, they they may have plausible deniability. If for no other reason to save face in their own mind, not saying for sure, but in western culture that is often the case with college girls that work in cat houses in Nevada during college breaks. It happens, and I am sure in many cases the parents don't know, they think they are cocktail waitress's making good tips ... Some comments about being pushed into 'sex slavery' is ludicrous, especially when it's with the falang centers. Re the parents sending their girls out to work bar... While I have little first hand direct knowledge, I suspect that the older sisters, aunties, connected family friends, play a bigger part in and are more apt to suggest working bar to village girls/younger sisters. That of course is so they can send money home to their parents, and doesn't directly implicate the parent(s) in 'that' sort of work.

One thing I dislike the most about western culture is the judgemental righteous nature in the need to always be right... we were raised to always be right and defend ourselves that way instinctually. I try to be wrong less rather than always be right. Thais intentionally avoid shaming others. The wonderful Thai culture is practiced in avoiding the loss of face and in my opinion that includes avoiding making people feel lesser than or not being good enough. I would much rather embrace a culture that accepts everyone in their own way as opposed to expecting everyone to be held to a different or higher standard and if you dont meet that expectation then you are not worthy. I wonder why so many young people in the west are so defensive while lacking any understanding of vulnerability. Many reading this wont even get it...thats the point. What other people think does not mean jack shit to me. What I think of me is what really matters, that is what is most important. Be better, dont worry or judge others based on how or what you might expect the standard to be. Set your own metric, don't set your metric based on others expectations of success. We are all different and thats the beauty of life. If all flowers looked and smelled the same then they wouldn't be worth smelling, it is boring when you can predict the expected outcome. Be you, be different, be happy.🙏

Anybody who said that every girl in Pattaya was sent by their parents would be talking silly, in fact such a person would be cannon fodder for you with your counter arguments, as their position would be so easy to debunk. However, the reality is that the vast majority of Isan parents would suspect and even tacitly approve but they just would not openly talk about it. In most cases, the daughter saves face all around by saying they are a cashier, working in a salon, working in a restaurant etc. As long as they send money back to support the family, educate the younger brother, build a house etc. nobody back in the village is going to hold an inquest to establish where that money comes from. Yes, for most Western families in the same situation, there would be a huge scandal, tears, dramas, finger pointing etc. but Thais are just not like that. The daughter's standing is not determined by how she got the money, but how much money she has got. You are making the mistake most compassionate Westerners make by assuming that Thais look at the world the same way we would and have the same values. Well, they absolutely do not and by taking your position, it is almost as if you think you have to go in denial about what's happening for some reason.

    • @thenakedguru
      @thenakedguru  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

My main point is it is a “vast majority” of only around 1-3% of parents - the focus is less on if they know or don’t and more on the presupposition that Thai isan farmers send their daughters as a rule when the statistics debunk this completely 👍

@@thenakedguru I've been going to Thailand for over 20 years and living in Thailand for 10, and I have never heard one person say that Thai farmers send their daughters in 100% of cases, that argument is ridiculous. It almost seems like a strawman argument, but even if somebody said that then they would be a complete fool and not worth debating. However, the people in the village and the family in most cases know what's going on, they are not stupid. In Thailand it just does not have the same stigma that we in the West attach to it. I know you are a nice guy but it seems that you are judging things only by Western standards and do not fully understand the situation in Isan. The reality of the situation seems strange or immoral to Westerners, and for this reason you feel you are doing the right thing by looking at the situation through rose-tinted glasses. Just because we see something as wrong, we can't assume it is wrong in other cultures, therefore you don't need to defend it. Thais wouldn't even waste time talking about it.

@@thenakedguru Well, not sure why you would waste time providing an analysis to debunk a comment that is clearly ludicrous, but like all your content this video is very interesting to watch. I maintain that in the vast majority of cases the parents know, and that is probably where we differ.

My general rule is i make a video if i have seen 3 similar comments or more on a matter, this one came up more than that and so what seems to me and you like basic streetwise and common knowledge is clearly lacking. Moreso i feel i played down the number last time and this follow up was to somewhat put this straight. I actually think we agree but you took from this video that I think Thais see this as immoral behaviour, or than im defending them, I am only defending the isan farmers that have nothing to do with this trade and making the point of the population size we are dealing with. Sex is a commodity in Thailand, the only difference is they are no repressing it like the west.

For those who cannot believe the parents don't know, you must realise many of these parents have never travelled far from their district. They have absolutely no idea what Pattaya & Bangkok are like, or what occurs there. They are simple innocent people. A big city is as close to reality to them as going to the moon. The largest thing most have seen is perhaps a Central shopping mall in the nearest town.

It's so very easy for others to judge and condemn these poor girls and sometimes young men who work in the flesh trade but without the MALE punters, there would be no sex trade to attract them to for easy money. Maybe if I had been born into that level of poverty I might have had to do that as well... There for the grace of God go I.

@@thenakedguru This was a common discussion in the late 90s and early 2000s. I had a thai friend who was a social worker back then and dealt alot with women in the Thai prisons. She also dealt with hundreds of these type of girls from isaan over the years. When I asked her about this situation she said that in most not some of the cases the girls were either directly or indirectly pressured to go into this type of work by their parents, often the mothers. She also said the parents always knew what the girls were up to but turned a blind eye to save face. It was not just to support the parents but also the brothers. Who were often spoiled. But due to the shame and saving face culture in Thailand it will be next to impossible to get an accurate picture of this.

With a friend we would bring a map to the bars and ask the girts where they are from. Most were from northern Thailand. However, I agree with your analysis of pimping. I also remember hearing that the reason girls stay in prostration is because in Buddhism you accept your lot in life. Kind of odd. In conclusion, good on ya for staying in Thailand.

having been lucky enough to spend sometime in rural surin, i would tend to believe its much closer to 50/50 about parents and family knowing about what type of work there siblings daughters etc do in pattaya, yes i believe 99% will tell there parents that they work hotel or bar cashier or only service girl, and the parents choose to believe this for many reasons, and not force an issue that does not need forced, but the sex industry in pattaya is changing it was a way out of isaan for a girl years back to find a western man to care for them, but this is becoming rarer and purely money driven now in my opinion, sometimes ignorance is bliss and avoids confrontation, as to girls working in pattaya i would probably put the number of isaan girls in pattaya to be over 75% and all ages not just pretty 23 year old go go dancers but many ladies/girls much older working many different style bars selling sex, i have a thai partner now and still go to places like pattaya as i have many friends there and will go to see them and enjoy the beer and atmosphere, so can sit and talk to the girls purely as a customer who is in there bar to drink beer, and not any extra services so to speak, it cuts out the game playing trying to catch a customer for the evening as we can both relax without trying to impress or solicit each other and truth and honest conversation often follows, they do not want there family to know what they do as it carries stigma and is not socialbly accepted, but tolerated as a means to earn money, and bring there lifestyles up,
a small thai family will see there land shared out amongst children as each generation dies out and grows so a once large farm capable of supporting a family on its rice yield will now be shared amongst 3 or 4 brother and sisters, perhaps 1 0r 2 will move to the city and gain employment there but the farm will still not be enough to support each once land is shared out and this has happened and is happening each generation and land will move from person to person but once sold is very difficult to regain for a farmer, so any money sent home will be received with gratitude and without question (why kill the golden goose), and in my opinion this burden is carried much much more by a daughter than a son, prostitution has and will always be present in most society how we perceive or react to it is up to each individual, but i believe that a very mall percentage of thai girls are forced into prostitution by family members but thousands are by economics and lure of making money, hope this makes sense and it really is mine field of problems and solutions and western thinking and thai thinking can be very different on the same subject, there is no doubt that sex trafficing and abuse is abhorent but the flip side is the billions of baht that has filtered into isaan. i don't have any answers, but i do have confidence in thai people to manage what happens in thailand, sorry if i went on a bit cheers
