I am a complete audio n00b, well I like audio but the lingo and all Greek to me. But these videos are great. It gives me a bit of a Bob Ross feel. Very soothing voice and a relaxed way of telling the story! Loads of kudos!
To get selection to work in Audacity 2.2.1, I had to check the "Enable Spectral Selection" box in Spectrogram Settings in the track menu. Thanks for the useful video!
Paul, is it possible to playback the spectrum that you've selected, ignoring everything above and below? And thank you for all those tips. I just discovered the spectrogram tool and I love it.
I've certainly had that idea and implemented it experimentally. It hasn't got into production. There is a Spectral Delete effect too now, which might let you accomplish this by deleting what's above, then what's below, then listen, but you would then have to undo changes twice.
I just downloaded 2.1.3 and I have no idea how you got a separate wave form in the top and bottom. Thanks! Let me just explain what I'm trying to do: -- I have extracted audio from an mp4. I want to analyze the features of each person's voice, and then adjust each speaking segment so that one person sounds like the other person (like a pantomime effect).
Quite simply, I duplicated the track. But then the duplicated track may be edited differently from the original. Audacity does not yet allow simultaneous wave and spectrogram views of one track.
Paul Licameli I found it. Thank you so much for creating it. Trying to learn how to not be heavy handed with it. The video you commented on was Whittam's World Episode 19.
Details of the user interface are different in the final released product. It requires some setting up, because it's an advanced feature hidden from default view. Using the drop-down menu under the track name, first choose Spectrogram. Then open Preferences, choose Spectrograms, and check the box to Enable Spectral Editiing. Then in the Effects menu, be sure you see the three Spectral Editing effects. You may need to open Add/Remove Plug-ins... to enable them. You may want to open Preferences, Keyboard, and assign keystroke shortcuts to these effects. You may also wish to open View, Toolbars... and check the Spectral Selection toolbar.
Could you help me out? I can't seem to find an enable spectral editing checkbox in my spectrograms preferences. I am on Audacity 2.1.1, Windows version. :)
Things changed between 2.1.1 and 2.1.2. In 2.1.2, there are separate menu items in the menu under the track name, for choosing views with and without spectral selection.

We'll just add a bit of pink-noise here. Happy little pink-noise... Now take your cross-fade brush...

Indeed it is.
