It isn't obvious for too many people. I live in Kuwait, and it's been a shitshow in relation to freedom of expression. Not the worst, but that's not saying much. The rest of the world isn't that far ahead when it comes to preserving and applying freedom of expression even in the first-world nations. In France, it's been eay better than say Kuwait, but it's pretty bad in comparison to the US. Same with Canada, Germany, Australia, the UK... etc. The US isn't an ideal, but it's far better in comparison when it comes to freedom of expression and free speech. So, it's not obvious.
"Not only in principle, but because of consequences there should be every opportunity for people to speak freely." Maybe I see through Chomsky here, but to say 'because of consequences" there should be every reason to speak freely, I cant help but think he is siding with that argument that freedom of speech is ok, aslong as one is aware of what the consequence may be, whether violent or not. That is my take, I stopped liking what he says when I was about 24. Now I just see him as a communist apologist, antifa idol, and dangerous authority on, well, nothing, really. Oh, he hates US imperialism.
Not only have you just completely misinterpreted what Chomsky was saying here, but you have also abjectly mischaracterised him in general. Wilful, ideologically fuelled ignorance precedes you.
He says in principle as well but you misrepresented him. He’s just saying not only is it good because it is a fundamental right, but also that that right of free speech leads to better consequences.
Great, thanks for this! Waiting for the full talk..
You need to make this podcasts available on TH-cam, we need more like this being accesible for our young people.
The only person who truly believes in actual free speech is Noam. Nobody in either side gets the principle. Why us Anarchists are so wonderful. lol

the fact that you have no idea what he is an authority on makes your opinion worthless, lol.
