That’s the difference between a pet dog owner who doesn’t understand how to train a dog and a pro. I worked with our Rotties and taught them the delivery trucks were a good thing. They became best buddies with our regular Amazon and UPS drivers. It also helped the drivers always had milk bones in their trucks😂

I used to live next door to a pit bull who was kept chained to a log. He always acted like he wanted to rip my leg off. Then he saw me give my dog a barbecued rib when I cooked out one night. He saw how happy my dog was with that rib, and he cried like a puppy! I gave him a rib, and then I was his favorite human on the planet. After that, he was always a guest at our barbecues.

There are a couple ways to introduce yourself before you try and touch them. (It was our own dog that my parents adopted from the local pet facility, so we were surprised). One day we were out of town and he had the puppy caged because he wasn’t yet housebroken, but the dog would not stop barking. I remember telling him to let the puppy roam and search the house and he might quiet down. Instantly it worked! A few minutes later, nothing. I thought it was super cool at the time for a puppy to want to flex and show off his new skills. These dogs are super intelligent and make wonderful guard dogs. Nowadays, I wouldn’t go near the dog but I feel better knowing my brother picked an excellent breed of dog to guard his growing family. 💯 👍🏽

As a little girl I was afraid of cocker spaniels, jack russell terriers and other dogs of that size. I don't know why this happened, but when I was about 12 years old, I went home after school with my friend. She lived outside town on a semi large piece of land so they had a Rottweiler as a family pet and to guard their property. When we got out of the car I followed my friend and her sis when they hopped over the gate. Her Mum only noticed I was with them after her dog started running. I had already stopped in place showing my side to him and I spoke calmly using his name and showed no fear. He slowed up a bit and checked with his owner, sniffed at my hand (I had my arms by my sides), then did a sit when I told him to. After that he ran off to bring us a stick and came back with the branch of a tree 😂 My friend's Mum was baffled that I knew not to run or freak out. I can't remember why I was so calm. In my late teens I also had a German shepherd run at me on a beach. He got away from his owners and I was walking just ahead of my parents. I heard him coming, turned around and he basically jumped up and put his front paws on my shoulders. I had no fear reaction at all, even though he was taller than me. I just held him up gently, told him he was a good boy and then eventually he hopped down. I still don't understand my reaction, but I'm thankful to still have all my fingers and toes 😂

I had a male neo that was very protective. I would tell people to just not even acknowledge him when they came through the door, and to let him set the pace. For them to come into the house, be seated, and pretend that he didn't exist. To not even look directly at them. Then after he got relaxed and comfortable around them, I would give them a treat to give to him.
But I do so appreciate that you are teaching people that there is a right way to meet guardian breeds
And... for anyone that walks into a yard, and discovers a protective dog when it is too late to avoid a "meet and greet" don't stare at the dog, don't panic, and don't extend your hand. Just kind of pretend that the dog isn't there, or keep your back turned to the dog. Let them sniff, and see who you are. It is very bad etiquette in dog language to attack someone who isn't even looking at you. I had avoided getting bit many times by doing this. Even by dogs that were known biters, that the owners didn't have the decency to tell me, after inviting me over, but not telling me about their dog.

@@RamboOnYaMom not true. By making him sit for the treat it shows that the human is alpha and in control. It teaches the dog to respect that person. The dog should have been put in a sit and stay by the owner and then had the person enter. This is telling the dog that it is okay to allow him in and there is no threat. Then give him a release and have him sit for the treat from the person entering. By allowing the dog to intimidate a person at the gate shows the dog he is in control not the owner. Which can lead to the dog thinking they are in control in other situations.
