One of my Grandmother’s best friends was Mrs. Doheney’s senior French maid. I recall as a very young child going to the mansion to visit her. When the friend retired, Mrs. Doheney gave her four sherbet dishes from the vast silver set that she received on her marriage. These treasures are now mine.
I liked everything about this house. I am surprised that they used curtains instead of pocket or french doors to separate rooms. Strange. It's amazing that the house still stands. Wonder what it looks like now.
Actually you are wrong about that. I was in the house, once, and I noticed the huge, solid, beautifully made pocket doors as I passed from one large room to another. I just walked in and the people were very friendly and welcoming. It was being used as a college administration building, at that time. It is part of what was Los Angeles' first gated community.
I loved the breakfast room. Such small, intimate rooms for family breakfasts were usually bright, cheerful, with good views of the grounds. Many families also used them for afternoon tea with a family member when not entertaining, or even a casual supper. Once the staff served the tea tray, they disappeared for very private family - or "madame's" - personal time. Very cozy in a grand home. Dining rooms were very formal, usually only for entertaining, which of course was frequent and lavish. And libraries are always my favorite rooms in any house. Nice that he had a second library, a rare book room for his treasures. Crazily eclectic exterior design, but interiors were surprisingly lovely.
Beautiful Mansion both inside and out !! Love the wandering Vines up the walls of the exterior of the house . The grounds and drive up the roadway to the Main House are really beautiful . A nice little walk Inwould enjoy at my age . Love a property wth lovely trees and gardens all around ❤😊🌸🌺
My Grandfather and his brother lived near this man when they were children. When they saw this man’s car, they and the other neighborhood kids would yell “Down with the rich! Up with the poor!” When my aunt interviewed my Great Uncle on cassette tape, that was one of the stories.
Wow, What a TEASER!!. I almost expected you to go into what it looks like today!!. I felt like it was a cliffhanger from a TV series and I could feel a scream of NOOOOOO!!!. SHOW ME what it looks like NOW!!!. 😂😂🤣😂 DEFINITELY the Pompeiian room.. and, the fact that there were ornate oil paintings EVERYWHERE!!. WOW!!. COOL!.
It is still standing and from what I heard, years ago, it is open to the public, by appointment, one day a year. You can get info at the Doheny Mansion website.
@@JohnBrown-cn2qzoh cool to know!! Would be , prob improbable, nice if it had all its original furnishings, but I'm getting ahead of myself!. Thanx! I look it up!. 😁👍...⚜️
In the early 70s I got to know Kevin Doheny, who was a Great Grandson of Edward. He took me to this mansion and told me a bit about it's history. It's truly an amazing place.
I am amazed but thrilled that it still remains a silent witness to all of ups and downs of Mr D. I am quite intrigued about the bodies in his son’s mansion. I’ll tune in Ken! By the way, your narration is spot on.❤😊
Thank you for another great video, I too am glad that his house didn't fall under the wrecking ball to become a parking lot. Awe to go to bed poor and wake up rich, good night and sweet dreams!
Very opulent home. The plaster was incredible with the design continuing from the walls to the ceiling. And two libraries. I found the home to be comfortable. I really liked the kitchen! And the landscaped grounds were beautiful. I’m with the person who commented the desire to walk up the driveway. I hope the home still exists and is preserved. I also felt the clip went too quickly through the rooms. I wanted to stay awhile longer and soak all the details in 😊😊
I love all the libraries. They all look so cozy. It looked like there might have been a Fredrick Remington painting in the main library. What is the house now, a private home or a public place?
That house and surrounding properties was turned into Mount Saint Mary's University, a private university dedicated to under-privileged women (I believe it is co-ed now). USC's main library has the Doheny name, dedicated to one of his sons who died in WWI, while in the US Army. I'm sure there is more of the Doheny generosity that I'm not aware of.
@@kenhamasaka2524 Fatty Arbuckle's mansion is also encompassed by the Mount Saint Mary's campus. It is now a dorm for students at Mount Saint Mary's. Jordan the Lion does a vlog about Arbuckle's manse, with film of what it looks like inside now, along with still shots of the mansion in the teens/twenties.
Teapot Dome: where no one was convicted of giving bribes; but the Secy of the Interior was convicted of accepting them. Excellent video, but to be honest I've never liked the looks of the exterior of this house and the interior doesn't thrill me either.
I gather from what you're saying that it was his son's house, the one in Beverly Hills, that appeared in the movie "There Will Be Blood." I know that one of the Dohenys owned the mansion that appeared in the movie.
I love the rags to riches stories of the U.S. Good report, Ken. Oops, Doheny made bad decisions. Love the old home (especially openness of this one)and neighborhood photos of that era. I imagine it is nothing like that now.
I had seen another documentary about the Gilded Age homes and for some reason using curtains to divide rooms was like the fashion back then I know it is a little strange, but some of the homes did separate the homes like that I just using heavy laden curtains
What we do with our money, largely = the picture of our Ego. How much clutter is necessary to achieve security? Victorian is the height of layers of stuff.
ONCE AGAIN, KEN, ANOTHER DEMOLITION FREE ZONE FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKFULLY IT'S STILL THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT CONDITION IS THE INTERIOR IN??????????? IN ANY CASE, LONG LIVE THIS HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly not really impressed with that house. Just seemed overdone just for the sake of doing things. Gimme frankie Lloyd any day. Even the gamble house is more exciting to me

Waking up with only a couple dollars in my bank account, done that.
Gone to sleep as one of the richest people in the country, still waiting on that.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
you gotta BELIEVE the wealth will come. You gotta SHOW YOU BELIEVE. You do the second bit by sending one of those dollars in your bank account to me.
So glad this grand house has been preserved instead of turned into parking lot, like so many other grand mansions in SoCal.
I liked everything about this house. I am surprised that they used curtains instead of pocket or french doors to separate rooms. Strange. It's amazing that the house still stands. Wonder what it looks like now.
That was my question. Is the house still standing.
@higherseeker Watch video instead of only listening and you might discover something. 🤔

It indeed is still STUNNING and open for touring.
It’s in mint condition. I lived ½ mile from it for 30 years
A beautiful and expansive home and the landscaping looked incredible ❤

Well now I gotta know about these bodies at his son's house

Spectacular and glorious home! Thank you for all of the wonderful pictures and for the work you put into this video.

I've been there several times for chamber music concerts. You forgot to mention that the dome ceiling in the Pompeo room is made of Tiffany glass
Where in LA is it?
@ritamix33 on Mt. St. Mary campus.

I don't care for much of it either, especially the exterior. A strange style. Sort of Moorish meets Spanish mission. Weird.
Really beautifully decorated rooms.
Oh wowwww the music room is my favorite

Chester place, it's the same area/street the real adams family house was located but is now gone....
21 Chester Place ~ "The mystery behind the real Addams Family house"
Breathtaking!!❤
surprised in the dining room, how small it was,
Back in the 80's, I was part of a murder mystery held at Greystone manor and then a music video.
Good job 👍

Great home, a bit on the big side for me, but it still seems cozy. Just needs a inground backyard pool.....
I’m wondering who’s the new owner? Lot of French furniture found in LA area? But best interiors are harder to find today.
If the house was destroyed, I hope the books were saved!
Thanks for showing the kitchen. I've always found them interesting, because the family presumably never used it. :o)
Doheny...Sequoia...La Jolla...tar pits! Now I know the origin of the street name.
Is the home still standing?
My favorite thing about this house that is still around and I got to see it in color.😃👍
Hmmm... So this is what is meant by "New money". Beautiful home. 😊

Is Doheny Beach in Dana Point named after him?
What a wonderful house-castel ❤❤❤
Inspiration for the character in there will be blood
As seen in the Columbo Episode "The Conspirators" 1978
You can Chester Place, it is now known as Mt. Saint Mary College.
I wish I had my own library.
I like Greystone manor, which belonged to his son
Very beautiful!

Imagine spending all that money on a luxurious, expansive mansion in an exclusive part of town, only to have the Adams family move in!
What street is this mansion on?
Life is short even for the rich. I’m sure they never thought it would end but it does for all of us.
That place might do in a scrape.
Plaster walls! They sure don't build em like that anymore.

If you watch the video again, you can actually, clearly see, the great pocket doors.
Greystone doubled for the Osborn mansion in the original Spider-Man films!
Lovely house. you didn’t say that dirty word “demolished” so it’s still standing?
SWEET
This house is not part of the Mount Saint Mary's campus in Los Angeles.
This is more to my liking than the ultra-florid edifices of New York. It's amazing that it still exists.
If I had that kind of money I'd have a wall, with electrified concertina wire on the top. And I'd have a bunch of bobcats roaming the grounds.
🩷🩷🩷 stunning
Sounds like the character portrayed in there will be blood

Reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies
You said he went to bed a rich man and woke up with just the money in his pocket, but never said how he lost the money.
I just read his bio. Dude died rich. Wife got house and lived till her death in the 50s.

Yes, please slow your speech just a little bit.
I think the narrator is a smoker: talks in gasps.
It’s pronounced Dah ony
who owns it today?
part of Mount St. Mary's college satellite campus near DTLA
The filthy rich.
The house was wonderful, the narration however, wasnt enjoyable to listen to. Too breathy, went too quickly.
