  • Here is the next video that shows you how to amend your mix for containers or raised beds. And I show you how I set up a basic planting hole for tomato and other vegetable transplants: • Amending Your DIY Soil...
    Bagged soil products generally tend to get more expensive with the simple addition of more and more peat moss. Really not much else. Sure a dash of compost, fertilzer, or perlite, but not that much to really matter. I show you how to make a very basic, easy, and inexpensive 50/50 garden soil mix for your garden beds, raised beds, and containers. You can amend this basic mix as needed.

    I was comparing prices of garden soil online and was about ready to spend a bunch of money on it, until I saw this video. I read the ingredients in the products and, you were right, it was mostly peat moss with a little fertilizer thrown in. Thank you so much for helping gardeners make our own products much cheaper!

      We worry so much about getting the bed filled perfectly. This works. A garden becomes what you add to it over the years. That is when the good stuff happens. For instance, adding compost and organic matter when you can each year builds up the soil.

    THANK YOU for the comment about compost. My biggest frustration is that people on many gardening videos for DIY recipes cavalierly say “throw in your own compost.” Ummmm… what if we don’t have any? Buying more ingredients (like bagged compost) starts defeating some of the cost saving. But your no-no sense approach and great info is why I live your channels. I’d love a video with more info on how to work around the “no compost” situation for those of us just starting out or who are unable to have compost heaps/tumblers. Thank you for making gardening so approachable and less intimidating!!

      Exactly. All my video could be 30 seconds long. Grow in full sun, water regularly and use compost. Done. That would be silly. Took me years to be able to find I place I could compost on scale.

(2 ) 3 cu ft bales from Lowe's and (3) 2.2 cu ft bales from Menards gives me almost 12.7 cu ft to mix with topsoil and compost. Can't wait to play in the dirt!

    came to the same conclusion on my own a few years ago and man you aren't kidding with the money saver part. I actually use 1 bag of the peat mixed with 1 bag of hummus and manure mixture ( roughly 3 bucks a bag ) as a potting mix and then for garden soil I just mix those 2 into my existing soil. My top dressing is just slightly aged chicken and duck manure left in their straw bedding. I leave it near their coop and it sprouts the straw seeds which the chickens practically wipe out before it roots, then after about a month it goes on as dressing/ mulch all in one. Absolutely love the gardening community and all the wonderful things I get to learn from you fine folks. Keep sharing and growing you guys ❤️.

      The next step is checking out your local municipalities and see what they make. Dump trucked composted garden soil, isn't bad. But you do have to check it out first. If its not that great, you can add peat to it on a lesser scale.

    Glad to see you are an advocate for peat moss. Peat moss is great stuff because it retains water and releases it (releases better than clay) and it decomposes very slowly (could have been at the bottom of peat bogs for thousands of years). For container plants, I use 50% peat moss, 20% sand, 20% perlite, and 10% pumice. Roots need air and water first and nutrients 2nd. I do not add compost to the soil because I don't want the compost decomposing and rotting the roots (more important for planting perennials than annuals). I place a fertilizer on top, both a quick release and a slow release that contains mycorrhizae, followed by a thin layer of compost or mulch. After all, falling leaves that decompose are mother natures way of putting nutrients back in the soil (on top of the soil, not underneath with the roots).

I can only do container gardening on my balcony because I live in a small apt and spent a ton of $ on soil already and need to get more to plant the rest of my seedlings. Don't forget to shop around. I just went to Lowe's last week looking for peat and was surprised to see that the price is now $28 vs. last year when I could get it for $12 - $14. I had expected an increase in price but this has completely doubled. On the flip side of that Costco currently has the miracle grow raised bed soil for $7.79 for 50 quart bags. I've seen smaller 2 cubic foot bags of this selling for $14 -$17 in other places. For the amount I need to top off the raised beds and start a new bed, Costco saved me some of the heavy work of mixing soil blends.

    • @sctahir
      @sctahir ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cloudmccauley I think the only thing I will add is some compost and azomite rock dust as my beds are pretty well established. They just need to be topped off and I think the azomite will help to re-mineralize the soil. The compost bin looks to be pretty full and ready to use so that will help spread the MG a little further.

    Hi Gary if you add your own soil don’t you get weeds and poor drainage . I now use compost , peat moss or coconut 🥥 coir in blocks with vermicelli this has worked for me. 😀

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always get weeds but they are easy to pull. 1/2 of you own soil and the peat make a really base soil. You can add more if you feel it drains poor. Your mix is really nice. Some earth in that, IMO, brings in microbes and micro nutrients. However your compost does the same.

    Last year I filled several tree size nursery pots with the cheapest soil from my big box store. I added in my leaves and branches as I filled the pots. This year I am topping those pots with more leaves and my compost, add in cheap fertilizer and my garden is growing like crazy. My native soil is beach sand so I grow very little in the native soil. I need to go back to the county mulch pile to top off my gardens.

    Looking forward to the sequel to this.
    I always liked the mix of pine mulch (not the nuggets) and cheap landscape type potting soil (not mix), sometimes more or less peat, a little lime to balance acidity of pine mulch, and perlite. I don't have much to fill, but I thought it was better than store bought potting soil.
    When it's made fresh, it's too nitrogenous for tomatoes.

      I would just eyeball it and fill half the bed with top soil and half with peat moss and if you know your soil is lacking in nutrients also put in a couple cups of an organic fertilizer (or use compost instead of peat). Then use a hard rake or shovel and blend the raised bed mix ingredients together.

    I get some compost from my dump and they get it from another place that makes it . but this year they aren't delivering so I went down to get it , about 1/2 hour away so the cost was 27.00 dollars for a yard and vitamin is ground to 1/2 inches to where the bags have larger pieces in in it . The Costco bags I bought , I took and made it finer for my seed trays and got rid of the bigger sticks . but in my raised beds 🛌 it is OK with some big stuff , I also get bags 🎒 of pitmoss and vermiculite from a place that grows bean and peas and then they throw away after planting. So I get it and mix my own stuff and my plants 🪴 and many strawberries 🍓 love love the mix I do .

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Bagged organic stuff is a bit of a farce. Its not tested. It is just based on reporting from the maker. No chemical fertilizers or sprays for 3 years and the soil or soil additive is stamped organic. The quality is not tested for stuff.

    Hi Gary, I was wondering your reasoning behind using 50-50 native soil and peat moss vs 50-50 native soil and compost. Both ways significantly increase the organic matter for the home made raised bed mix. I'm thinking maybe you are advising to go with the peat moss because the bagged price can be significantly cheaper than bagged compost. I'm thinking if you get the finished compost from a landscape products supply place than the compost would be the cheaper option.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Compost is always king but most people dont have a lot of quality compost. If you do, 50 50 is great.

    I have a raised bed that hasn't performed well for years. The plants don't get huge and the fruit isn't prolific like it was in the past. I'm not sure what to do as I don't think adding compost will be enough. We've done that over the last couple years. Problems seemed to have started when we picked up a 50/50 black compost and mushroom mix from a local supplier. We wonder if we got some bad soil or maybe we just don't know what we are doing.

    I have watched so many videos on soil for raised beds. And so many different ways to do it . This is the first year for raised beds for me. And I’m a little nervous because we have put alot of money into these beds and I dont want to fail the crops. I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer. Our beds are 16 inches high made out of cedar fence pickets. I bought 16 bags of organic soil for raised beds. We have a big pile of black dirt that has been in our backyard for years. I also purchased 3 bales of spaghum peat moss. Should I mix the black dirt , raised bed soil and peat moss together to fill the beds? Or leave out the peat moss? I just don’t know what to do and I need to know what to do because in the next week or so we plan to fill the beds . I just need to know how to do it. Please help! :)

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would use the dirt. You garden beds will get better year after year once filled with the continued use of compost. Filling them perfectly isn't the goal but building them up is. Organic soil probably is much different than your black dirt, peat, some shredded wood, a splash of compost and organic fertilizer. At 16 inches I would fill the bottom 4-5 inches with you black soil. The rest would be a blend some the bagged organic, peat, and you soil together. equal parts or so. Its the top 6-8 inches that gets the good stuff.

    Are you saying that the “Organic “ aspect means nothing? What kind of chemicals are in these different options?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well organic means a lot but just not with packing. Here is the question, what make the additives organic? And why would the products not labelled organic be any different? Soil is considered organic if it hasn't had chemical fertilizers on it for 3 years. Thats about it. And the additives arent tested. Basically nothing is tested. Its a time frame. You would think it means soil tested and checked and all that but it is not.
