Replacing the seal in a Dana 44 involves replacing the bearing with the seal there is no other method to do this. the old bearing must be cut off along with the collar. The new seal and bearing must be installed properly so that you don't have to do this again. You will need a press to make this happen. You will press the bearing until it is snug on the shaft

Thanks for the video. I had to replace leaking axle seals. I made an axle tube cleaning brush out of a piece of 1/4" threaded rod, a tall hex nut, and a Harbor Freight wire brush wheel. The wire brush shaft is soft steel and is easy to cut threads into. Mine had the tapered bearing and I had to remove the race from the axle tube.

My Harbor Freight 20 ton press has never let me down. Only paid $149.00 for it. Just love it!

As already stated you should press the bearing and lock collar separately. Yes it takes two times but this is the way. Also if you have disc brakes there will be a lip on the retaining plate. The lip goes inboard facing when installing.

Last time I had one do that. I tapped it with a hammer and it went right on.
Life is so much easier with a press.

I've heard you should press the bearing and the retainer separately.

I’m impressed . Where would the brake backing plate with drum brakes on an 86 cj dana 44. Mine came with that style retainer and seal set up that you installed ?

Because if I put the retainer on the out side in between the backing plate and axle flange you know then it won’t retain that seal. The seal is not a very tight fit .
