So moving seeing Leonard Bernstein’s art coming to life in Warsaw in the 21st century.

A moving performance of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with beautiful solo singing from the boy treble. Thanks to the visionary Canon Walter Hussey - who commissioned it when he was at Chichester Cathedral - this wonderful inspiring work from Lennie Bernstein came to being or else, who knows, it might never have been composed. Even long after his death, Bernstein's brilliant music and influence continues to move us across religious and social divide. He was, and still is, a huge force for the betterment of mankind.

I am somewhat at a loss for words. This is a Divine performance of Jewish Liturgy. Most spectacular in all aspects! In the late 1980's, I was privileged to be part of a professional chorus that performed with the Evansville (USA) Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Stuart Kirshaw. He was in the boy chorus in Chichester Cathedral when this work debuted with Bernstein. I was the baritone soloist, my solo debut. The tenor was the female cantor from the synagogue. At a lost for words, I was moved to tears. We had a full orchestra, but the use of this majestic organ made the work even more sacred! The boy soloist did a superb job in what is a demanding score. Please continue your Divine work in Warsaw!

I agree, it's a wonderful performance, see also one conducted by Sir Gilbert Levine who used to be a principal conductor and music director of Krakow Philharmonic where I saw him live. He conducted this for Papal Concert of London Philharmonic for Pope John Paul II (he was Pope's friend) and later with a different orchestra, both are on You Tube. They are conducted with more pathos, this one is more soulful, calmer, both version are wonderful. I grew up in Poland and have seen this orchestra live as well.

My son is going to sing in this, as the "boy treble" in November at Norwich Cathedral

I love this performance, with less pathos, more calm and more touching. Boy soloist is absolutely wonderful and so are the choir and orchestra. It truly touched my soul

It is the essential frailty of this young voice singing a really much trickier melody than it probably seems that makes this such a wonderful piece.
Oh, I could also mention the tenors and basses have a torrid time of the fast section after him as well.
The final chorale is just wondrous.
All in all, beautifully rendered, thanks for this.

I mean, absolutely stunning! I just discovered this masterpiece and I am glad that I stayed past the initially dissonant opening. The softer movements are so achingly gorgeous, especially the boy solo that starts at 4:32. The harmonies are so lush and interesting, I wish that they would teach this in composition school instead of some of the monsters that are shoved down our throats as the gospel. This is truly exceptional music, and a wonderful interpretation, thank you for posting! 😀
