I have to say I almost envy the life experience a man like this has. Lived through wwII, vietnam, cold war, invention of the television, improved technology, popularized restaurants, famous landmarks, the pandemic, etc. He gets to look back at his childhood in a completely different era, a century ago.
Now THIS is a baseball story and a truly American one at that. For 150 years this country has gone through so much change and reinvention, but PTO baseball has remained a constant connective thread throughout all that time. I’m a fourth generation Red Sox fan myself and my great-grandfather passed just weeks before Carlton Fisk and the 1975 WS. At 10 my grampa and I watched with sadness as the 1986 team blew their chance in game 6. The old man got to see them win it all in in ‘04 though only to pass away the following summer. He, like this gentleman was a soldier in WWII. Baseball is as much a link to our past as anything in this country. We go to watch grown men watch a child’s game an hang on every moment.
