As a huge fan of the books, this was an incredibly faithful adaptation. The quick-witted dialogue, the characters and worldbuilding were all 1 to 1, and any expansion was lightly and smartly done.
My only big issue was the resolution to book 1 being rushed (episode 3). In the book, Combe Carrey Hall is the most haunted house in Britain and its ghosts take about 100 pages to defeat. It's really gruelling. The show hits all the beats (the Red Room, the Screaming Staircase, the Monks) but hits them too quickly for dread to build up the way it does in the book.
Other than that it was as flawless an adaptation as we could've hoped for imo

I re-watched it 20 times now. The show feels like being at home with friends. I had my fair obsession with shows like X-Files, Supernatural and Sherlock, but never have I experienced anything like this (I am double the age of the characters, so this came as a surprise to me). The characters, the cast, the cinematography, the colours and lighting, the interior design. It just sucks me in and doesn't seem to spit me out.
Usually I would be totally annoyed by cocky characters like Lockwood, but he is presented in such a raw state with so many facets, that you immediately know that his big smile and behaviour is just his way to protect himself and that there is more about him. And I also applaud how the show manages to portray those young adults, who have to put themselves in such dangerous situations, while still being teenagers

Can we talk about the vibes of this show? Like Lockwood & Co is a straight up early 2000s show. Bold in its worldbuilding, edgy, dark, somewhat pretentious and honest. And oh my god, the OP.

In terms of not fully closing the arc - the main thread goes through all the books, so this mirror part is just one of the steps as well. Stroud, the author of the book series, is known for leaving hooks in the first book that are already connected to the final reveal in the end. As someone who's read books, I can see a couple of those in the very first episode. So if we will get the second season, we will have a proper answer from the Scull about that mirror and a lot of other things.

it’s so exciting that lockwood & co. is finally getting the recognition it deserves. 14 year old me was very obsessed with the idea of making a tv series out of this and now at 20 i opened netflix, having half forgotten about it and there it was. i would have really loved to see them spent another episode on combe carey because in the book that shit went hard. but all in all i‘m quite happy that they put book 1&2 in one season so that i didn’t have to wait for the skull and its shenanigans. i also think there were missed opportunities on the sides of the costume department to put lockwood in dramatic hats at least once, i don’t remember if he actually wore hats but i always thought he did. anyway, this is what i wish all book adaptations were like. it was my favorite book series growing up and to finally see it come to life is so cool.

The best part of this show is the characters and the world building, just as you said. The young main characters stand out, the talented actors really bring them to life. The characters are more interesting and complex than in many other teen dramas, specially Lockwood and Lucy. And the show makes the society they live in believable, down to visuals and details.

Sometimes, I just wish for a ghostbusting trio without the burden of the sexual tension between two of the leads. But my interest is piqued, I must read the books. Thank you for a well-thought out review.

No worries. If the show continues to more or less follow the books, there is no explicit romance between the two. For the reader, however, there is room for interpretation imagination. Btw in the books, the story is told from Lucy's point of view...

I resonate with what you said at 8:40, I felt thee same. But the end still had things to offer in my opinion, the emotional scenes between Lucy and Lockwood especially, the one between her and George too, so i didn't feel disappointed. Overall i really enjoyed watching this show. The worldbuilding was interesting, the main characters all had chemistry and the dialogue was funny... Here's hoping Netflix renews it for season 2!

As a bookreader I loved the show. There were some changes between the books and the show but that was understandable. Though I still have my doubt if that scene at the Winkman's with Lockwood in the electrical chair was necessary (it's done differently in the books). You know, if you've read the books you caught some Easter eggs throghout the show. I hope the second season will be announced soon.

I had no idea it was a book series, thanks for letting me know!
I completely agree that the world building, writing and acting were fantastic in this. Lockwood gives me an almost Sherlock Holmes or Kaz Brekka from Six of crows feel with more charisma that really adds to his likability.
In defense of George, he’s a 16 year old who is getting attention from someone who is actually interested in what he is interested in. Of course he’s going to do dumb stuff.
I will say that throughout the show something feels off, the hard hitting moments don’t really hit me as hard as they should such as Lockwoods reaction to the death of that “henchmen” of the source dealer. He was so shaken by this and we could see it in his acting but somehow the impact of that didn’t quite reach me as much as it should have. Still, brilliant for a Netflix show, definitely made me excited for next season!

I really really liked the show. The only thing I didn't like is how fast Lucy was accepted and how quickly they became friends. By episode 3 Lockwood was ready to risk it all for her, I would like more of a build up, more tension so that the following statement " You and George are my family" would feel more earned. And Ruby's acting was a little bit off at the start, maybe the kinda cringe dialogue is to blame, idk.
Anyway, overall, it was a very very enjoyable show, can't wait for season 2
Other than that the show was amazing

I am not even a big fantasy YA fan, mostly stick to historical non fiction, documentaries, and then your average action adventure or bipics etc, but i do like some mainstream fantasy titles but def never heard of the lockwood and Co franchise before the show came out, but I watched it in one day it just enveloped me, such refreshingly great writing, acting, grounded and believable worldbuilding and storytelling that is so uncharacteristic for the genre and even Netflix originals. They really weren't forcing the alternative nature of the characters and the alt soundtrack with the cure was perfect

It's funny how you describe Lockwood as addicted to limelight which is true. Yet, his character in the books was the exact opposite. He did enjoy winning but all of his efforts were focused on making his company successful. He always defected attention off himself and placed it on the company and the team. Yes, the Netflix series is Lockwood & Co. but it misses in showing us who these characters truly were in the books and their dynamic as a team. I find it strange that so many people think this show does a great job of capturing the spirit of the books when it fails to capture what made each character great on the written page. I could give similar examples for every character in the books. Forgetting the novels and judging the show on it's own merits puts it at average for today's stream services which isn't a bad thing for a company just trying to produce content.

I think it's nice when stuff doesn't follow the books all the way through since it's not supposed to be exactly like a book books are for more details and story while a movie is just to give you an idea of it being real and to feel more connected to the world it plays in

I didn't read the books, so I really love that they did not spend any time with exposition. It is refreshing to just jump in the middle of the story. I also found it nice that they did not try and force a love-story down out throats. Just a hint of maybe-maybe not. Thats is the perfect amount. I did enjoy the relic part- There is a huge market for old christian relics, so it didn't see far fetched at all. My only annoyance is that they always seem to almost nearly die... constantly... while bumbling about, rescued at the last second by a de·us ex machina

its surprisingly faithful to the books, and in the instances where its not as much the actors really do a good job of inhabiting the spirit of the characters, I often found myself thinking well that didn't happen only to immediately follow up with but X character would ABSOLUTELY do/say that, I think the cast, especially the main trio did a really good job. the only problem I have with it is it adapted 2 books into 1 series so it was a little rushed, mainly in the second half where it does not give enough time to properly explore the psychic draw of the bone mirror or its effects, the mirror is a big deal and though the show goes into how desired it is by the black market it didn't do a very good job showing the terror of it or the obsessive draw it has on George or Joplin, i hope now its gained an audience it takes its time a bit more with the remaining 3 books

As a sword enthusiast, I would like to see the rapier duels more realistic. Less spinning and less super fancy stances make the scene much more anxiety inducing. Rapiers, like all sword, are very dangwrous and sharp tools designed to kill, but too often we see swords treated like bats.
Too improve, they could keep their points facing towards the opponent and treat each other with caution, because that's what happens in a sword fight. I really like the fact that they have used rapiers, because they are very pointy and designed for thrusting. I sharp edge is less stress enducing than a sharp point. Whether this is an intentional thing or not, it was a good decision. Now I think they need to be treated as such; pointy, sharp, and deadly. I think this would be a worthy decision.

I haven't read or heard of the book, and went it without even watching the trailer. It's a good show, but I think if the show wasn't focused on the young adults demographic, it could'e been better. I only found out that the original novel was for young adult after I've finished the series, because when you watch it you know. Not that it's bad, I just didn't like the dialogue that much like Lockwood said she's an old friend when they were heading towards flo. It just doesn't sound as cool or makes so much sense when someone that young says it.
But overall it's enjoyable. I really enjoy the mystery and investigative aspect of it.

I liked it, though I facepalmed my forehead flat during the show that rather should be called: the screwed up Teens. Like Scooby Doo´s mystery machine, they are always lucky enough to get new clues without being killed while making one selfish and stupid decision after another. Normally I would expect the plot to distract from irrational events while here it surprisingly hits the kids every time like a boomerang. The biggest disturbing flaws were: facing criminals with rapiers like no one ever invented guns or using silver and iron in melee against ghosts, but never considering fine-chainmail or silver bullets.

    • @penvellyns
      @penvellyns ปีที่แล้ว +5

Fairfax, the iron baron, has a gun in episode 3. They also cut this out, but in the books, Fairfax wears iron chainmail to protect himself from ghosts, but it had to be specifically engineered so it wouldn't be too heavy to wear. He then takes it off before Annabel gets him. Silver bullets probably wouldn't work very well, it wouldn't dent the ghosts long enough to actually make them remanifest, I think. The books do a good job of explaining who gets "cutting-edge" ghost equipment and who doesn't and making that part of the enforced scarcity. It's not that people aren't constantly thinking of different ways to do it, it's just that they're not as practical or as easily mass-produced (or as PROFITABLE).
