12 Minutes on the Worst Magic: The Gathering Set of All Time

- When you're talking about the worst set of all time, you have to grade on a curve, and on that curve, there is one set that stands head-and-shoulder above the rest.
Wait. Is is above or is it below? Hm.

Both my ears enjoyed this video
and why shouldn't they!
reuploading because the sound's fixed. if you liked or commented on the previous upload then you have to do the same for this one, it's the law
narrator: the sound was not fixed (great video tho)
@@retronymph fuckin seriously?? GDI
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 sound works in both ears but the music is way too loud in certain parts and it's hard to hear your voice
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 Yeah man, your voice is only on the right side after the intro. Until the final 15 seconds, then it switches back to the left ear only. Do you have your mic set to bidirectional? Sounds like you start on the left where you're handling your audio software, and then switch to the right side to read your script/notes, and then right at the end you go back over to the left to end the recording.
this may be the most Boisian video I've ever seen not made by Jon Bois himself. one Jon isn't enough so I'm glad another stepped in
it’s a fun format to play in for sure
@@maxlimit9129 Soooo right. i love his videos but dont care too much for the subject matter (the visuals and presentation are enough to carry). Now seeing that with a topic i am very much interested in... I didnt know how much i needed this😌
This was my first thought haha
This is what I thought, I knew it was intentional
for posterity, on the new upload: the children yearn for a coldsnap video
they certainly do not!
@@thicketbasilisklure2971
Fine, the old decrepit magic boomers yearn for the coldsnap video :v
Ah yes, MTG Jon Bois inspired video. Neat.
Edit: I noticed this may have sound mean, I mean this in the best posible way. MTG nature as a card game, their competitive scene and the history of its market can go really well with this kind of video for the amount of statistical analysis you can do.
yeah the format lends itself to magic really well, i really enjoy making these. thanks for commenting!
Never liked a video so fast. Could you do 13 seconds on why Ixalan was mid? (I obey the law)
i mean now i definitely have to make that one
@@thicketbasilisklure2971People really overhype the setting. It's still my personal favorite story wise. It's setting is just okay, even for it's era Amonkhet and Kaladesh presented far more interesting fantasies imo
my right ear can finally enjoy this video
and frankly, your right ear deserves it
I love the Jon Bois vibe this video gives. I never knew that i wanted a Jon Bois for MtG content.
:)
Me, like 6 minutes in: Man, this is giving me huge deja vu for that one excellent video about how Masques Block both sucked and ruled by
HEY WAIT A MINUTE
HOLD UP
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the smooth jazz is a little too loud. You're hard to hear around 4:40
Ok but the Shoal cycle is the most well-balanced five color free spell cycle ever put to print, all those cards are "Pretty good" and did something at some point in magic's history. Credit to that
Jon, you deserve so much more love from the MTG community for your lore-filled takes. Please never stop making these.
I love my youtube reccomended sometimes I love this video
Nice
I love this, always looking forward to your sporadic content drops Jon!
Suggestion, lower the background music a bit, and fix the left ear audio
the return of the return of the king
Dude, I'm loving the magic content with Jon Bois/SB Nation style music/presentation. Keep up the good work!
Just watched the new video over breakfast, now I've got ANOTHER one for lunch? Hell yeah.
you’re welcome
I think this is one of the best Magic videos I've ever seen... Compelling storytelling, a good voice, and interesting visuals all in one. I'm afraid i might have to go on twitter to ask you for more now...
Motion Sickness: the Video
Everything you said was on point though
We back again! Was rewatching your other stuff this past weekend
good shit but you have to like and comment on them on every rewatch or else it doesn’t count TIA
Good visual effects, cute format. Your writing could be tighter and say more about the actual cards. There was a lot of dead air and repeating yourself, and I'm not sure I learned very much.
thanks for the fixed sound tried watching the old one but i died from only one ear
My right ear is doing better but I think in the part at 1:22, your voiceover is only in the right ear now?
sfdklgjsdlkgfndslgfkjnsdags
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 If it's any consolation, the last few seconds of voiceover are only in my left ear again
nope we all good 🙏
So happy to see you uploading again
Coldsnap is actually saucy as hell, but it did badly in Limited because it was a single small set meant to be a third set of a block, and didn't have the rest of the block to work with. (They stacked the set with "x copies in graveyard" spells to help, and there were an abundance of them.)
Scrying Sheets, Counterbalance, Rite of Flame, and Skred are a few notable cards. But when it was taken with the whole of Standard in its lifetime, it got to see a lot of silliness, including Counter/Top. And snow-covered basic lands are just objectively better than their normal counterparts.
Jon Bois Inspired MtG video? Absolutely love it. hope to see more!
i hope to deliver more!
Man am I glad the TH-cam algorithm allowed me to be reunited with your content.
What do you think would happen in Worst Set Ever Block Constructed (Homelands/Prophecy/Saviors)? My first thought is Ebony Owl combined with Prophecy's mana denial, but Prophecy also has many ways to discard cards for effects. I doubt there's anything worth finding with Enduring Ideal, but some of the other epic spells might work because there's nothing to play, your lands might keep exploding and you can have spellshapers. I'm not sure if homelands would have any impact at all, so the format might need that hilarious old rule that said you had to run homelands cards.
brb seeing if there are any rebels in saviors/homelands
I am commenting because it has been brought to my attention that it is legally required
smart
Looking forward to the next PT video :) thanks for fixing the audio!
next one's a doozy. have you SEEN the PT decks from when saga block was legal?! sheeeeeeeeesh
Giving a like and comment again to help the video, algorithm, or whatever out. Also to say again, 10/10 video! Always a great day when you upload. I don't remember exactly what my last comment had, but it has something like "Would love to hear about sets you enjoy, or what makes a set strong vs broken."
Even though 16 year old me back then knew little about what constitutes good and bad magic cards, Betrayers and Saviors got me to quit after quite enjoying Champions. I only started again with Scars-Block, so this robbed me of OG Ravnica.
i won a box of betrayers at a JSS. couldn’t sell it to anyone so i shredded it and didn’t open a jitte. so yeah i totally understand quitting right then!
Enjoyable video, thanks for sharing! ❤
I haven't played the game, but you gave me enough context to understand what you meant and the style inspiration was immediately familiar.
awe i'm glad you enjoyed!!
Literally the most entertaining Magic content on the platform
always have to bring up, kamigawa block constructed might be kind of solved but honestly, it's a fun super skill intensive format that i'd recommend anyone who started playing the game in recent years to find a friend to dabble in it with.
I don't know if I commented or not last time so I'm just here to make sure I'm in compliance.
smart
Solid showing for a new channel, and the John Bois style fits like a glove. All I could complain about is maybe a couple long pauses and the audio mixing being biased towards the soundtrack.
I genuinely think i took 1d4 psychic damage when you showed pithing needle
dude, Deece, come back. We need you. Also kudos grandissimo for not counting Fallen Empires as a bad set.
When it rains it pours, two TBL videos in two days!
i make it rain son
My ears are joined in solidarity
Imagine the timeline where zack said 12 hours.
fantastic video, the audio is actually quite good so instead of it feeling weird to have your voice only in one ear i instead compelled to turn my head to the right to hear you better for some reason
Owling Mine was fun. I built it for the last Modern tournament I went to, with an updated trick in it: I used Aether Tradewinds and Mystic Sanctuary in a loop once I hit 5 mana, so I could keep bouncing their lands or creatures while still keeping up a counterspell. I even beat Eldrazi Winter game 1 by locking him out, haha. (g2/g3 he sided in Chalices though, sadly.)
Feels like homie likes a Jon Bois video
You like a Jon Bois video, homie?
Chart Party is good stuff.
Wtf a mtg video that isnt a borderline shitpost on a white background powerpoint???
Kataki at least did eventually find a home in Vintage sideboards. Good Lord what an awful set
lolol
doing my civic duty to comment. thank you very much for making these
"It is the third most valuable card in the set."
In the screenshot: three cards with higher prices. (Haha...)
Spice 8 rack is the philosophy tube of magic, your the Bobby broccoli
If we didn't get Saviors of Kamigawa I would never have gotten to build my favorite Commander deck of all time, the Great Snake Mistake. so I still love SoK despite its trouble.
Top 7 sets imo [by 1) coolness, 2) power balance, 3) impact, and 4) limited environment]:
2 Innistrad
1 Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
6 Ikoria
4 Ravnica 1
5 Strixhaven: School of Mages
7 Invasion
3 Theros
Invasion was just a really solid set with a pretty fun limited environment early on.
Ikoria was broken in a fun way with a really interesting limited environment due to Mutate, Cycling, the at-the-time-new ability counters, and companion. Triomes, Companion, Drannith Magistrate, etc. were pretty toxic for various formats, but I think it's the broken set that's the most equally broken and broken for the most interesting reasons. Go back to the pre-release opinions on the set, everyone got it wrong more-or-less, between Companion turning out to be maybe the most broken mechanic ever printed to Emergent Ultimatum randomly becoming the best deck in Standard to Zenith Flare being a playable Standard card to people missing the impact of Drannith Magistrate on Commander.
Strixhaven is heavily underrated. Learn might be the mechanic that got slept on the hardest ever - Mascot Exhibition had something like a 70% winrate just being drafted yet it took a solid two sets for people try the mechanic in Standard. It wasn't the most powerful set - outside Mystic Archive reprints and Expressive Iteration - but the set was brimming with interesting cards that did kinda weird/specific things. Favorites include Fervent Mastery, Codie Vociferous Codex, Culling Ritual, Divide by Zero, Ecological Appreciation, Elite Spellbinder, Galazeth Prismari, Hofri Ghostforge, Plumb the Forbidden, Magma Opus, Mavinda Students' Advocate, Mila Crafty Companion/Lukka Wayward Bonder, Multiple Choice, the Command cycle, Resculpt, Sedgemoor Witch, Storm-Kiln Artist, Lisette Dean of the Root [awesome aggro commander], Velomachus Lorehold, Wandering Archaic, Witherbloom Apprentice.
Ravnica is a classic, though I think it has definitely aged and it's a slightly clunkier limited format than I remembered.
Theros - not particularly powerful, but definitely fun. Constellation, Heroic, Bestow, and Devotion were all pretty sweet, and it's the home to my favorite card [Boon Satyr].
Innistrad is fantastic. Awesome flavor, awesome limited environment [though 2x Innistrad/1x Dark Ascension goes hard], awesome cards. The OG Werewolves sucked pretty hard and the overall power level of the set was pretty middle-of-the-road, but Snapcaster, Liliana of the Veil, Unburial Rites, Delver of Secrets, Kessig Wolf Run, Laboratory Maniac, Past in Flames, Geist of St Traft, Ghost Quarter, Heartless Summoning, Intangible Virtue, Invisible Stalker, and Champion of the Parish are a pretty solid series of poster children, albeit Invisible Stalker a bit on the toxic side.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is maybe the densest set ever released for Standard, I believe it still holds the record for wordiest Standard set, and its eternal impact is basically limited to Fable of the Mirror-Breaker, Patchwork Automaton, and the channel lands. That said, I've never had more fun brewing than with NEO and I've never had more fun drafting outside Cube. A big part of that in my eyes is the Saga Creatures being not-so-subtly the best midrange mechanic ever - the set is just value central. Not even looking at those, the set has a lot going on between both enchantment-matters and artifacts-matter, plus Channel and Reconfigure and Modified and Ninjitsu, and a whole heap of cards interacted with multiple mechanics leading to the limited environment having a ton of texture and synergy. I could play that limited format all day, any day.
I was afraid when the og video dissapeared, but I'm glad it was just a tech issue
yeah that was my B
Could you do 30 minutes on why triple betrayers is the best draft format ever
Prophecy is still the worst.... You don't sell me.
Could you do a 10 minute video about the $1000 magic booster packs?
I still saw this and am still a nerd.
Left channel Jon Coppola when stereo Jon walks in:
Ngl, surprised Dragon's Maze wasn't mentioned.
DGM is pretty bad as far as sets go (prolly killed the block structure by itself) but had more going for it than any other honorable mention
Yay! My headphones that for some reason prefer the right side despite all the settings saying its equal love this!
Edit: 12:37 to the end of the video still has the audio problem sadly 😢
noooooooooo
As a massive Kamigawa fan... It's hard to deny this XD. My pick would probably be Rivals of Ixalan. As an avid MTG hipster, I love all the unique effects. Best Ixalan has going for it is Pitiless Plunderer, i suppose, but the card design overall feels very boring, even if it may be objectively 'better' than Saviors. Commander definitely is a massive factor though.
I love *your Jon Bois inspired style
i love you too
Oh hey, time to watch this banger again!
yes it is
bro watched some bobbybroccoli before you made this, or what?
This video was fuckin awesome, and I hope another stray tweet or comment inspires another talk of this sort. Damn dude.
Looks like Wizard Squares kino is back on the menu boys!
🙌
they're called manlands
Saviors had Twincast and Sakashima. Be nice!
last time i watched this with only my right ear on
time for my left this time
how’d it go?
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 it was Pretty Good
finally, mtg jon bois has arrived 🥰
Ideas unbound has been seen in doomsday lists in the past? Thats kinda something?
wait, holy shit, this is where you're uploading now??? i watched you on TCGplayer a while ago!
pro tip: open the video in vlc or smplayer or something and force it to mono
Pithung Needle the GOAT
Don't mind an excuse to watch this video again
that’s kind of you
Great video, i always knew Homelands wasnt as terrible as everyone says, it still terrible but i still like some of the cards in that set. The fact that the only card i knew from S. Of Kamiwaga was Pithing Needle says a lot about the set.
P. D: i would love to see a video about Coldsnap as well.
what is with you ppl and coldsnap lol
jon bois? in magic? in this economy?
I'd argue more for MoM: A, but that isn't really a set. Epic is so funny to me as a mechanic- but it really just doesn't help. I'd rather "Epic" was more like an enchantment that sat there and was powerful until you used some removal or something. Though I guess that would require it to just stop Sorcerer speed casting.
MoM: A was definitely cursed but for a very different reason
Awesome Video Jon! nice to hear your voice again. one question: What's 'Twitter'?
ugh
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 😂
Hurray for multi channel audio!!!
I think Bloomburrow might take top spot as new best set ngl
I know it's going to look a lot like bobbybroccoli but please use easein/out for the camera movement. Linear kinda hurts the eyes. Great vid tho.
Homelands is objectively the worst.
I really like the Video, but i wish you showed f.e. the epic Cards, in a way, to be read by us viewers.
The video so nice you have to see it twice😂
Nice video,
Wait.
No Fallen Empires mention?
not as bad as homelands, not as ruinous as chronicles, lives in the same era. fallen empires is bad but not really worth mentioning against those two
@@thicketbasilisklure2971 it's true. I'm trying to farm engagement here ;)
Can you do the video over again, but in 15 minutes instead?
no
it's modern horizons 1
EYO PAUSE NEW JON DROPPED
YES
IMHO Urzas Saga was the best
love that card
Ok, your argument is good. I did not come here expecting to disagree with you, Savior was a safe pick for a worst set.
BUT
You kinda cheated on the 12 minutes, theres a lot of time you take very long and noticeable pause that didn't bring anything. I can forgive the bad audio, but that kind of cheating? I can't let it slide /s
Yay fixed audio
whew
I feel like the original eldraine is pretty high up there on my least favorites list. Just kinda unbalanced with no super interesting cards
hate it
The style of video and the voiceover is bit too much like Jon Bois, which is fine! but your wearing your influence a bit too close to your sleeves.
Great vid tho, would watch again
swaggy
omg my right ear :D
it’s still there i swear
Wooo!!!
Wooo!!!
yay i can finish this now lmao
bad takes
