This is a bit off topic but I would love for Brindleface to give Squilf a life and apologize for Ashfur. I can imagine it kinda going like this: The next cat was one Squirrelflight had never met before, but had heard about many times. The she-cats familiar silver spotted coat almost made her shudder at the familial resemblance, but this cat was far less angry that Squirrelflight had seen Ashfur in a long time. Brindleface stepped up silently, and in a quiet monotone, she spoke, “With this life, I give you decisiveness, to know when a cat cannot be saved.” A wave of emotions rushed through Squirrelflight, strongly and painfully, not unlike the life for a mothers love. But this life was far different. Darker, colder, resigned. The burning protective emotions were not meant to keep a cat safe, but to save others from them. A sense of duty that she wished she never had to feel again. It was by far the most painful life, and Squirrelflight could hardly bear it. Once it was over, Brindleface stood still for a moment, and then, in a barely audible whisper, she said, “I’m sorry about Ashfur.” Before stepping back and letting the next starry cat take her place. Can basically guarantee that this won’t happen, but it would be awesome if it did.
I really like the idea of brindleface showing up again and the life she could give to squilf, but her apologizing for ashfur feels... sort of icky. It sounds like she would be apologizing for giving birth to him in the first place, back when nobody could have imagined how he would turn out to be someday, and that is just a completely messed up and victim-blaming thing to do in my opinion (...so completely on brand for the series if I think about it, she-cats getting the short end of every stick). Ashfur had every opportunity to stop himself and reevaluate his actions, while brindleface was only such a small part of his life, not really able to raise and keep him in check and thus probably the least likely to turn ashfur into a psycho and murderer. Don't make her apologize for being a mother. Make her sympathize with the pain squilf had to endure and reinforce that she has to use this life to let something like the rise of ashfur never happen again.
I guarantee you that you've thought about and remembered brindleface more than the erins have in five books. The fandom once again having a power level far above canon

I can imagine it now, Squirrelflight gets her lives, to which the Fandom will celebrate, but then there'll be some strange starclan nonsense and she only gets like one life, sending fans spiraling with anger.
So the conclusion I'm drawing from this is that Firestar and his descendants (with the exception of mr special jayf) all have the warrior cats equivalent of the cilantro-tastes-like-soap gene (the starclan-feels-like-dying gene) and when squilf gets her nine lives (hopefully. erins please. let her have this) she will also feel like she's dying briefly, lmao
and i find that raggedstar has such a bullshit death; if he got killed by a bite to the throat there's no way that would have stolen all his 9 lives--other leaders have received that injury and revived

Tbh I'm really sad Sunstar doesn't get more from the fandom. He's honestly a really cool character and I think his being a dad and mentor to Bluepaw has a lot of missed opportunity. I do honestly think the premise of visiting Star Clan being something that kills the individual - atleast temporarily to be something actually kinda neat, like yea - youre projecting yourself into whats essentially the afterlife; so the notion or idea of a cat having to die, atleast temporarily to visit starclan be it a leader or medicine cat sorta makes sense
Leafpaw's experiences makes me think if you could somehow make sure the medicine cat didn't wake up you could strand them in starclan by taking their sleeping body away from the moonpool haha
they start out with one life, travel to the moonstone, and get nine more. the pain from gaining the new nine lives kills them and takes away their original life, leaving them with nine.

in a completely unrelated note, in my countrys folclore, cats have SEVEN lives, not nine. i dont know what causes the lives disparity from english speaking countries to my country, but it is a reality. i'm used to hearing "seven" and not "nine." nine feels like the wrong number, and yes it was weird watching puss in boots the last wish because of the weird number of lives. i havent ever read anything past into the wild in my native language, so i have no idea if cats have nine lives and we just have no explanation as to why it's nine and not seven, which is probably what it is, but i love imagining that there's an entire new timeline of events of a leaders live because they had to exclude two lives and compress the events into seven lives.
If I were to make a poor attempt at a guess for why it's nine (in a Doylist reckoning, not Watsonian), my guess would be nine being an important number among Germanic mythologies, where the cultural atmosphere of the UK takes some cues from. That being said, it may not be true because I'm _pretty_ sure some modern-day Germanic cultures (ie Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, etc) have cats have five or seven lives (I've slept since I checked, so hhh). But I do know Turkey has a smaller number of lives, I'm pretty sure it's five, but it could be seven, again, I've slept since then, idk if it's the right one.
I know what I'm going to say is irrelevant, but the complications of the Warriors lore is the reason why I make up my own rules when it comes to creating a cat who is a leader to use in roleplay. I once roleplayed a leader named 'Boastar' who only received three lives because I made up a story about how she was some kittypet who joined ShadowClan and got brainwashed into believing other clans are bad yada yada yada so she ended up doing bad things and StarClan refused to gift her nine lives due to her actions and instead three ghost kittens, who were drowned in a barrel by Boastar's previous owner, gave her three lives and started haunting her as revenge for what her twoleg did to them. But Boastar thought they were haunting her as a punishment for her actions, so she decided to somehow repent and became a better cat.

If other cats that died before getting to the Moonstone/pool still got to become leaders, why couldn’t Curlfeather. The only explanation I can reasonably think of (other than saying they needed to give more time in the books) is that the wounds were too great for StarClan to heal. Sorta like a Tigerstar 1 scenario.
I think it's because her body was only collected the next morning. Wind Runner and Tigerheart were brought to the Moonstone/pool as they were dying/freshly dead.
I think thats because Frostpaw had run away, meaning the body couldn't be collected and dragged as fast to the moon pool (especially considering Riverclan is literally directly opposite of the moonpool, meaning its actually a very long journey for rc cats that might take till dawn to reach by nightfall) meanwhile Wind Runner was dragged immediately but probably not nearly as fast as possible, and Tigerheart died i think on tc territory, meaning the moonpool wasn't very far and therefore could be revived
Hello, fellow elder warrior cats fan in their 30's here, Squinting at my memories but the whole... FIRESTAR THINKS HE DIED thing when he got his lives, where he got 9 new ones entirely. The thing where they trash can the original life. Wasn't there a scene in that series (And maybe the others going forward if they kept it) where Firestar saw a ghostly version of himself in starclan? Is that the original life, they take the "soul" of the cat into starclan, and they basically "live on" in gifted lives until they finally go back themself in starclan? For ORIGINAL INTENT maybe, even if it was lost, YOU KNOW. Am I just too tired, literally drinking my coffee. Someone with better recall wanna ramble on this?
Iirc that happens in the darkest hour after Firestar loses his first life to Scourge. But since it appears the first time he dies as a leader I think they tried to imply that each time a leader dies the ghostly form becomes less and less ghostly until the leader dies 9 times and is fully in starclan

i believe the faint version of himself firestar sees is each of the lives hes losing. he first sees that faint cat when he dies to scourge that first time. but i mean it could always contain his first life in there and starclan just adds each life he loses until eventually firestar dies and has 10 lives in his dead-cat body or something idk
I remember this! But i’m pretty sure Firestar saw that fraction of his ghost *after* losing his first life to Scourge in the 6th book of the original series. Someone correct me if i’m wrong tho, it’s been around 2 years since i last read the first arc
You know, maybe StarClan was experimenting a bit with Firestar, Blackstar, and Leafstar. All those ceremonies happen around the same time, so Starclan decided they should try out killing the old life before adding nine more.
My hot take is that Tigerheart had the coolest leader ceremony place in the series, like sure the fourtrees or the moor is nice and all, but cmon a floating rock platform in the already gorgeous abyss of space is just perfect, and reminds me of something you'd see after the Eye of Eden in Sky: Children of Light
not theory cause it won’t happen, but cool idea (i think): Falling or Teleporting is dependent on who is getting the lives. Falling into starclan could be the leader getting their lives from cats in the dark forest, as if they were trying to tempt them into being an evil leader due to hurt in their life, and teleporting is actually going to starclan, in an attempt to try and motivate them to become a better person as leader, both trying to lead them down a specific path, either of bad or good. firestarish coldness is just going to starclan as a sort of either “you’re forgiven” or a kiss on the cheek. not real, will never be real, but idk- seems neat to me, and has the kind of bare minimum effort that i expect from starclan.
I think you are 100% correct that they just forgot the 9th cat. Everything they say IMPLIES that they got 9 lives, its only when you count them that you realize she absolutely did not. The 9 lives thing has always confused me a bit because of the whole 9 plus your original 1 life thing. I always assumed the life-giving ceremony just killed you. (Not because of Firestar, I read that book like 10 years ago, you expect me to remember how his leader ceremony was described? Ha!) Or maybe it's like a bank. In order to take out a loan of 9 lives, you have to put up collateral of your original life, which you "get back" when you go to starclan and you're allowed to be your full self again. Idk.
i just had the realization that the worldbuilding of starclan and all the magic there is like a middleschool online roleplay. change it however you want, dont answer the big questions cus you dont care, no set rules cus no one can agree on anything.
I can only think that squilf might not get her nine lives ( because the Erin’s are very disappointing) but at 8:34 fire star and leaf pool had the same experience when talking to starclan, yet when squilf has a turn to the moon pool things will go horribly wrong, she could die or possibly be seriously hurt. anyways now that I got 23 likes- (thank you) I’ll do another theory, while squilf and jay or alder are on there way to the moon pool some new villain or ambush may stop them along the way and cause conflict between them or thunder clan, I’m kind of imagining this new villain or ambush would take over thunderclan and become their leader. because no arc or book is safe :) edit 3: this edit is about her lives she is going to get, squirrelflight was in a unfamiliar place *am I floating?* squirrelflight thought, but then a blue cat approached her, it was Bluestar she have heard of her from tales in the nursery, “ squirrelflight with this life I give you the life of independence and faith, I know you will be a great leader for thunder clans future.” than bluestar padded away letting the next starry cat to take her place.

I think from what my thought is/ how I think it should be, medicine cats and leaders give up their original live to Starclan. They die. Like an investment that they swear to uphold the warrior code and follow Starclans guidance. So that way they can give their lives to a future leader or medicine cat.
Perhaps when windstar was dying they stripped her of her dying life and replace it with n equally dying life if that makes any sense? So she does get 9 but still is dying from the same cause of her original life.
I feel like if anything they're gonna A. split the lives between Bramble and Squirrel. I'm afraid they're not gonna make her a full leader. B. Bramble is gonna step down before starclan and his lives will get zooped out of his body and transferred to Squirrel. Squirrel gets Ten.
Im pretty sure intense pain is common I remember in yellowfangs secret raggedstar (and brokenstar ? cant remember) experience immense pain and I interpreted it as the pain of the last life ending as a new one is added? Each life adds pain of death?
Also (yes another comment) shouldn’t this confirm Squilfstar? Like Tigerstar died before reaching the moonpool, so if Squirrelflight dies shouldn’t that mean that she’s still confirmed her lives? (even if it’s -1 life or whatever)

Because of Frostpaw’s messed up visions and Curlfeather’s ghost showing up and saying to look “beyond the obvious choices” for a leader. Now I haven’t full read the recent arc so take that reading with a tablespoon of salt. But, Squirrelflight doesn’t have any of that. By the warrior code, she is the next in line to become leader. No fuzzy Starclan messages or anything, just point blank she should be leader. I’m rambling. Tl;dr I’m going to fight the Erins personally if Squilf dies before becoming leader.
You would think the cat with the most allies and friends at death would be more likely to get extra lives to lead their Clan longer while the cat with the fewest allies and friends would get fewer lives to prevent them from ruling forever.
I don’t know if they would actually do this for the reason i’m about to say, but i wonder if you could explain some cats having intense reactions from interacting with starclan through the moonpool or the crystal because of a dissonance between the consciousness and the body that is rare but could still happen. If whatever makes that happen happened to be genetic, it would explain firestar and leafpool both experiencing it, and maybe it could be worse for some cats than others? Sort of similarly to how neurodivergency or mental illness can be more likely to show up in people whose parents were also diagnosed
If medicine cats also have a higher tendency to experience visions and signs from starclan from a young age, that also might explain why it happens less in medicine cats than in leaders
i always thought they take away the original life and then give you 9 new ones, because if they didnt take away a life, then you would have the one you had as a warrior and only 8 lives from a leader. So i always assumed. Since wind was dead already or whatever they gave her "their gift" to revive her, meaning she had used up one of her lives. Which is stupid, but whatever lol

If i remeber right nightstar is the one that died from the rat sickness right? The book hinted at the fact that the sickness took his 9 lives. The whole lives thing cure the wounds you died form, not all so im just assuming after dying the deseise regressed but only sligtly. If i remember right after dying for whitecought bluestar didnt get better instantly either
Yes, he died from sickness, but no, he didn't have nine lives. I'm pretty sure the "Nightstar lost all nine lives from sickness" was a lie that Shadowclan or maybe Nightstar himself(? I don't really remember) told to not seem weak or something? honestly I don't know WHY they lied about that, but it was revealed in a later book that Nightstar never did get nine lives, and was more of an honorary leader who just died of sickness once. even LATERER it was confirmed to be because Brokenstar was still alive and didn't intend to give up his leadership, and therefore it was "out of Starclan's hands" for some reason.
Nah, that was clarified later. It’s in the prologue to (I think) Rising Storm, and the ShadowClan cats, who don’t know that Nightstar didn’t get 9 lives, say that it seems like he’s losing a life every day. Nightstar only ever died once to the carrionplace sickness because he only ever had one life, and iirc runningnose admits that later on :p
im pretty sure at some point in moth flight's vision, Windstar says something like "yep. StarClan give me this life back and 8 more etc. etc." So what I think this means is that Windstar's original life is the life that dies before StarClan "kills" the original life. Her spirit would originally start making its way to StarClan, but getting Wind Runner to the Moonstone freshly dead immediately teleports (or something) Wind Runner to StarClan. But since her spirit/soul was disconnected from her body in a way different from the typical method StarClan uses, she isn't conscious for it. Then the ceremony continues and she gets 9 lives (my opinion is that the Erins didn't count right and forgot to add a cat) as usual. Then her spirit is launched back down into her body and she wakes up.
Unrelated but I’m so used to a rewrite on tumblr (bonefall) that has Tigerheartstar with a different name (Heartstar, to avoid doubles) and she’s trans and I was so used to that the second I heard moon refer to heartstar as a he I got thrown for a loop lmao
im not really into the books but hearing this is so funny because on the roleplaying site i frequent like half the clans have a incredibly long line of leaders being denied their names and lives 😭
So, what I’m about to say may or may not contribute to the feelings the cats are experiencing by the writing team, but here goes. I’ve died a total of ten times, but I was revived each time. Don’t ask, it’s a long story. Each time I died I was surrounded by darkness, felt cold, and experienced a falling sensation before waking up in a world of gray surrounded by white figures whispering to each other. I’m assuming they were other souls, or whatever you want to call them. Each time I was told that it wasn’t my time, and I was sent back to my body, which believe me, is not fun. The last time I died it was a different experience, which doesn’t really relate. So, I’m wondering if the writing team is researching different accounts of people who died and came back. These symptoms can also be associated with astral projection, where people have the ability to leave their bodies. This could explain the medicine cats. Now, you do not have to believe my accounts, it could have simply been my brain’s reaction to losing oxygen. Another interesting thing is the recent discovery that our brains don’t completely stop functioning after we die. So, there is my two cents on the matter.
My little head canon of where prophecies and super powers and wot not in wc is that it come from the cats who have faded from startclan. Idk how to explain but basically I think that because we know cats fade from starclan/the dark forest and the fact that so few cats who are dead outside of these seem to stay connected to the living world is that once they are forgotten by those alive completely their souls can move on the the real afterlife. Cause I’m a little bit of a nerd who’s interested in space and that kinda of stuff I feel like this afterlife would let these very dead people watch over the living and see what is to come (ie see through time and space) but because they are so very dead they can’t directly communicate with the living but because starclan cats are technically dead as well they have a slight bridge for communication. It’s just not strong enough for direct communication so proficiency’s are are given to starclan as a way to try and help the living. This after life is where I feel Bristlefrost and snowtuft would have ended up and idk cats like tigerstar the first maybe just got their energy yeeted back into the world for the next villain to inherit
I came to the same “they didn’t count” conclusion while whatching this around the second theme Windstar v Tigerstar 2 was mentioned. There’s just no other sensible conclusion. (Though if anyone decides to make an in world explanation feel free to share! I always think it’s fun when the fandom patches the puzzle)

Maybe the reason for "We can't save this life" is similar to why Scrouge's claws were so dangerous? Something so severe even Starclan additional lifes can't save you from.
"average leader gets 9 lives per ceremony" factoid actualy just statistical error. average leader gets 0 lives per ceremony. Lives Georg, who lives in starclan & gains over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
But... Tigerstar II only has 8 lives. He was given one and it was taken to revive him. Then he got the others as usual. He has the exact same amount of lives as Windstar by the end of her ceremony. Windstar was the same way, hers was still basically given and then taken for her to be revived. The wiki even has his as being taken to bring him back to life.
Something I think should be mentioned is that inconsistencies when it comes to starclan is usually experienced by someone who had a strong connection. Eg, shadowsight, firestar, and jayfeather.
In my stories I just completely recreated StarClan. Gave myself a set system for just about everything. Is it entirely canon? No. And I’m in case that’s a good thing.
Theory: Starclan kills their only life so they can go to Starclan so they can get 9 lives, hence why they don't have an original life. (Edit: You said that lol!)
I was thinking a cool headcanon could be that the reason firestar, blackstar, and leafpaw feel like they're dying is because either Endgame Rebirth symbolism (kittypet and redeemed jerkwad) or something something at odds with starclan (future code-breaker), but onestar kinda throws a wrench in that unless i'm forgetting something smh (maybe something about the shotgun deputy appointment ig??)

I think nightstar DIDNT get lives was because brokenStar still had more then one left. Like 2 or 3 so they declined nightstar those lives because brokenStar still ha Shia. Pinestar became a kitty pet with only 1 so that’s how many he contrasts

If the cat's old life was included in this, that would mean the cat had 10 lives. No, the cat doesn't. So the death feeling must be StarClan *killing* the cat's old life and giving it 9 more. What about the spirit of the old life? Well, it's mentioned in one of the books Firestar's spirit in StarClan, though he had not died fully yet. It is *possible*, not *the truth*, that Tigerstar II's old life made its way into StarClan. Then you have Windstar. Windstar was severely injured, and she got her lives, like Tigerstar II. Here is a part from the fandom: "However, in Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight receives a vision to take Wind Runner to the Moonstone as the leader is severely injured. Wind Runner loses her original life, but by then StarClan has already bestowed her additional eight lives, also renaming her Windstar." In this section, Windstar was said to have died after her getting lives. How StarClan could see the future I am not sure, but this is what I understand. Here is another part of it: "After touching the stone (or drinking from the pool), the new leader cannot move for a short period of time, because their old life is being ripped away so they can receive nine new ones." This means the leader *does* die and gains 9 *new* lives. "Sunstar only had eight lives because Pinestar never officially retired at the Moonstone." -Fandom. "After the battle, Pinestar chooses to leave the Clan to become a kittypet. He says that he only has one life left, and he doesn't want to lose it in battle." Okay. Nightstar didn't get nine lives because Brokenstar was still alive. . . Why is this when Tigerstar II, Windstar and Sunstar all had it differently? And Brokenstar was also on his final life. So this makes it even *more* confusing. Nightstar should've gotten *eight*, not *none*. "When she receives the answer, she then decides to keep him prisoner and to call him by his warrior name, Brokentail, stating that he is no longer a leader in the sight of StarClan." -Fandom. If he is no longer a leader, shouldn't that just add more proof as to why Nightstar should get *nine* or even *eight* lives. I could be completely wrong, but MAYBE what Starclan meant by “we can’t do anything about that life” is that, even though Windrunner was dying, she was still alive, so they couldn’t give her all nine because a cat can’t hold ten lives at once??? And Tigerstar was already dead so they could give him all nine? But that only works if you believe what Firestar said about leaders getting stripped of their original life, and believe that for some reason Starclan was unable to strip Windrunner of that life she was losing.
another commenter pointed out how firestar saw a faint ghostly version of himself when he lost a life and jayfeather saw that faint version of him in starclan too- so maybe its more of a take your life and divide it into 9 so each time you're another 1/9 dead and in starclan or something (doesnt explain anything, but i wonder what the intent was taking that "fraction" of a ghost into account lol) also, remember when Jayfeather saved Poppyfrost by meeting her in starclan and leading her back to the living? ofc jay is an outlier and implied to possibly be more powerful than starclan itself, but if it works in terms of just yeeting the spirit back into the body as its in the process of dying, i wonder if leader lives work similarly somehow? also also, if we get deep into it, it can be assumed that there is a higher higher power above starclan, that makes the prophecies and dictates what individual starclan cats can/can't do-- maybe it only allows starclan a limited amount of power at a time based on... something, which is why there's a limit on how much they can give (and because they dont want leaders to be straight up immortal lol) and this level of power fluctuates over time. And why sometimes the starclan cats were able to fight in the real world while at other times they were basically useless. we all know the real answer is that the writers just didn't bother making it consistent or giving a reasonable explanation, but the concept of a power ruling over starclan is fun to speculate about.
Wouldn't it be neat if a leader conquered all 4 clans, becoming leader of all of them and thus got 36 lives and the series shifts to trying to kill this quasi-immortal dictator to restore the Clans

The next cat was one Squirrelflight had never met before, but had heard about many times. The she-cats familiar silver spotted coat almost made her shudder at the familial resemblance, but this cat was far less angry that Squirrelflight had seen Ashfur in a long time.
Brindleface stepped up silently, and in a quiet monotone, she spoke, “With this life, I give you decisiveness, to know when a cat cannot be saved.”
A wave of emotions rushed through Squirrelflight, strongly and painfully, not unlike the life for a mothers love. But this life was far different. Darker, colder, resigned. The burning protective emotions were not meant to keep a cat safe, but to save others from them. A sense of duty that she wished she never had to feel again. It was by far the most painful life, and Squirrelflight could hardly bear it.
Once it was over, Brindleface stood still for a moment, and then, in a barely audible whisper, she said, “I’m sorry about Ashfur.” Before stepping back and letting the next starry cat take her place.
Can basically guarantee that this won’t happen, but it would be awesome if it did.

I really like the idea of brindleface showing up again and the life she could give to squilf, but her apologizing for ashfur feels... sort of icky. It sounds like she would be apologizing for giving birth to him in the first place, back when nobody could have imagined how he would turn out to be someday, and that is just a completely messed up and victim-blaming thing to do in my opinion (...so completely on brand for the series if I think about it, she-cats getting the short end of every stick). Ashfur had every opportunity to stop himself and reevaluate his actions, while brindleface was only such a small part of his life, not really able to raise and keep him in check and thus probably the least likely to turn ashfur into a psycho and murderer.
Don't make her apologize for being a mother. Make her sympathize with the pain squilf had to endure and reinforce that she has to use this life to let something like the rise of ashfur never happen again.
This is too good and too smart, they would never do this, although thank you for writing this into the world 😭

in a completely unrelated note, in my countrys folclore, cats have SEVEN lives, not nine. i dont know what causes the lives disparity from english speaking countries to my country, but it is a reality. i'm used to hearing "seven" and not "nine." nine feels like the wrong number, and yes it was weird watching puss in boots the last wish because of the weird number of lives.
i havent ever read anything past into the wild in my native language, so i have no idea if cats have nine lives and we just have no explanation as to why it's nine and not seven, which is probably what it is, but i love imagining that there's an entire new timeline of events of a leaders live because they had to exclude two lives and compress the events into seven lives.

If I were to make a poor attempt at a guess for why it's nine (in a Doylist reckoning, not Watsonian), my guess would be nine being an important number among Germanic mythologies, where the cultural atmosphere of the UK takes some cues from. That being said, it may not be true because I'm _pretty_ sure some modern-day Germanic cultures (ie Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, etc) have cats have five or seven lives (I've slept since I checked, so hhh).
But I do know Turkey has a smaller number of lives, I'm pretty sure it's five, but it could be seven, again, I've slept since then, idk if it's the right one.
I know what I'm going to say is irrelevant, but the complications of the Warriors lore is the reason why I make up my own rules when it comes to creating a cat who is a leader to use in roleplay.
I once roleplayed a leader named 'Boastar' who only received three lives because I made up a story about how she was some kittypet who joined ShadowClan and got brainwashed into believing other clans are bad yada yada yada so she ended up doing bad things and StarClan refused to gift her nine lives due to her actions and instead three ghost kittens, who were drowned in a barrel by Boastar's previous owner, gave her three lives and started haunting her as revenge for what her twoleg did to them. But Boastar thought they were haunting her as a punishment for her actions, so she decided to somehow repent and became a better cat.
That's a really interesting concept! It has a lot of potential!

If other cats that died before getting to the Moonstone/pool still got to become leaders, why couldn’t Curlfeather. The only explanation I can reasonably think of (other than saying they needed to give more time in the books) is that the wounds were too great for StarClan to heal. Sorta like a Tigerstar 1 scenario.

Wind Runner and Tigerheart were brought to the Moonstone/pool as they were dying/freshly dead.
I think thats because Frostpaw had run away, meaning the body couldn't be collected and dragged as fast to the moon pool (especially considering Riverclan is literally directly opposite of the moonpool, meaning its actually a very long journey for rc cats that might take till dawn to reach by nightfall) meanwhile Wind Runner was dragged immediately but probably not nearly as fast as possible, and Tigerheart died i think on tc territory, meaning the moonpool wasn't very far and therefore could be revived

Hello, fellow elder warrior cats fan in their 30's here, Squinting at my memories but the whole... FIRESTAR THINKS HE DIED thing when he got his lives, where he got 9 new ones entirely. The thing where they trash can the original life. Wasn't there a scene in that series (And maybe the others going forward if they kept it) where Firestar saw a ghostly version of himself in starclan? Is that the original life, they take the "soul" of the cat into starclan, and they basically "live on" in gifted lives until they finally go back themself in starclan?

Iirc that happens in the darkest hour after Firestar loses his first life to Scourge. But since it appears the first time he dies as a leader I think they tried to imply that each time a leader dies the ghostly form becomes less and less ghostly until the leader dies 9 times and is fully in starclan

You know, maybe StarClan was experimenting a bit with Firestar, Blackstar, and Leafstar. All those ceremonies happen around the same time, so Starclan decided they should try out killing the old life before adding nine more.
My hot take is that Tigerheart had the coolest leader ceremony place in the series, like sure the fourtrees or the moor is nice and all, but cmon a floating rock platform in the already gorgeous abyss of space is just perfect, and reminds me of something you'd see after the Eye of Eden in Sky: Children of Light
not theory cause it won’t happen, but cool idea (i think): Falling or Teleporting is dependent on who is getting the lives. Falling into starclan could be the leader getting their lives from cats in the dark forest, as if they were trying to tempt them into being an evil leader due to hurt in their life, and teleporting is actually going to starclan, in an attempt to try and motivate them to become a better person as leader, both trying to lead them down a specific path, either of bad or good. firestarish coldness is just going to starclan as a sort of either “you’re forgiven” or a kiss on the cheek. not real, will never be real, but idk- seems neat to me, and has the kind of bare minimum effort that i expect from starclan.

I think you are 100% correct that they just forgot the 9th cat. Everything they say IMPLIES that they got 9 lives, its only when you count them that you realize she absolutely did not.
The 9 lives thing has always confused me a bit because of the whole 9 plus your original 1 life thing. I always assumed the life-giving ceremony just killed you. (Not because of Firestar, I read that book like 10 years ago, you expect me to remember how his leader ceremony was described? Ha!)
Or maybe it's like a bank. In order to take out a loan of 9 lives, you have to put up collateral of your original life, which you "get back" when you go to starclan and you're allowed to be your full self again. Idk.
i just had the realization that the worldbuilding of starclan and all the magic there is like a middleschool online roleplay. change it however you want, dont answer the big questions cus you dont care, no set rules cus no one can agree on anything.
I can only think that squilf might not get her nine lives ( because the Erin’s are very disappointing) but at 8:34 fire star and leaf pool had the same experience when talking to starclan, yet when squilf has a turn to the moon pool things will go horribly wrong, she could die or possibly be seriously hurt.
anyways now that I got 23 likes- (thank you) I’ll do another theory, while squilf and jay or alder are on there way to the moon pool some new villain or ambush may stop them along the way and cause conflict between them or thunder clan,

I think from what my thought is/ how I think it should be, medicine cats and leaders give up their original live to Starclan. They die. Like an investment that they swear to uphold the warrior code and follow Starclans guidance. So that way they can give their lives to a future leader or medicine cat.
Perhaps when windstar was dying they stripped her of her dying life and replace it with n equally dying life if that makes any sense? So she does get 9 but still is dying from the same cause of her original life.

Now I haven’t full read the recent arc so take that reading with a tablespoon of salt. But, Squirrelflight doesn’t have any of that. By the warrior code, she is the next in line to become leader. No fuzzy Starclan messages or anything, just point blank she should be leader.

You would think the cat with the most allies and friends at death would be more likely to get extra lives to lead their Clan longer while the cat with the fewest allies and friends would get fewer lives to prevent them from ruling forever.
I don’t know if they would actually do this for the reason i’m about to say, but i wonder if you could explain some cats having intense reactions from interacting with starclan through the moonpool or the crystal because of a dissonance between the consciousness and the body that is rare but could still happen. If whatever makes that happen happened to be genetic, it would explain firestar and leafpool both experiencing it, and maybe it could be worse for some cats than others? Sort of similarly to how neurodivergency or mental illness can be more likely to show up in people whose parents were also diagnosed
If medicine cats also have a higher tendency to experience visions and signs from starclan from a young age, that also might explain why it happens less in medicine cats than in leaders

Yes, he died from sickness, but no, he didn't have nine lives. I'm pretty sure the "Nightstar lost all nine lives from sickness" was a lie that Shadowclan or maybe Nightstar himself(? I don't really remember) told to not seem weak or something? honestly I don't know WHY they lied about that, but it was revealed in a later book that Nightstar never did get nine lives, and was more of an honorary leader who just died of sickness once. even LATERER it was confirmed to be because Brokenstar was still alive and didn't intend to give up his leadership, and therefore it was "out of Starclan's hands" for some reason.

It’s in the prologue to (I think) Rising Storm, and the ShadowClan cats, who don’t know that Nightstar didn’t get 9 lives, say that it seems like he’s losing a life every day. im pretty sure at some point in moth flight's vision, Windstar says something like "yep. StarClan give me this life back and 8 more etc. etc."
So what I think this means is that Windstar's original life is the life that dies before StarClan "kills" the original life. Her spirit would originally start making its way to StarClan, but getting Wind Runner to the Moonstone freshly dead immediately teleports (or something) Wind Runner to StarClan. But since her spirit/soul was disconnected from her body in a way different from the typical method StarClan uses, she isn't conscious for it. Then the ceremony continues and she gets 9 lives (my opinion is that the Erins didn't count right and forgot to add a cat) as usual. Then her spirit is launched back down into her body and she wakes up.

Unrelated but I’m so used to a rewrite on tumblr (bonefall) that has Tigerheartstar with a different name (Heartstar, to avoid doubles) and she’s trans and I was so used to that the second I heard moon refer to heartstar as a he I got thrown for a loop lmao

So, what I’m about to say may or may not contribute to the feelings the cats are experiencing by the writing team, but here goes. I’ve died a total of ten times, but I was revived each time. Don’t ask, it’s a long story. Each time I died I was surrounded by darkness, felt cold, and experienced a falling sensation before waking up in a world of gray surrounded by white figures whispering to each other. I’m assuming they were other souls, or whatever you want to call them. Each time I was told that it wasn’t my time, and I was sent back to my body, which believe me, is not fun. The last time I died it was a different experience, which doesn’t really relate. So, I’m wondering if the writing team is researching different accounts of people who died and came back. These symptoms can also be associated with astral projection, where people have the ability to leave their bodies. This could explain the medicine cats. Now, you do not have to believe my accounts, it could have simply been my brain’s reaction to losing oxygen. Another interesting thing is the recent discovery that our brains don’t completely stop functioning after we die. So, there is my two cents on the matter.

My little head canon of where prophecies and super powers and wot not in wc is that it come from the cats who have faded from startclan. Idk how to explain but basically I think that because we know cats fade from starclan/the dark forest and the fact that so few cats who are dead outside of these seem to stay connected to the living world is that once they are forgotten by those alive completely their souls can move on the the real afterlife. Cause I’m a little bit of a nerd who’s interested in space and that kinda of stuff I feel like this afterlife would let these very dead people watch over the living and see what is to come (ie see through time and space) but because they are so very dead they can’t directly communicate with the living but because starclan cats are technically dead as well they have a slight bridge for communication. It’s just not strong enough for direct communication so proficiency’s are are given to starclan as a way to try and help the living. This after life is where I feel Bristlefrost and snowtuft would have ended up and idk cats like tigerstar the first maybe just got their energy yeeted back into the world for the next villain to inherit

I came to the same “they didn’t count” conclusion while whatching this around the second theme Windstar v Tigerstar 2 was mentioned. There’s just no other sensible conclusion. (Though if anyone decides to make an in world explanation feel free to share! I always think it’s fun when the fandom patches the puzzle)
I thought that leaders die to get nine lifes and medicine cats have near-death experience... I mean.. Until I realised it's warrior cats and constantly contradict itself.
Also I thought Sunstar got lives because Starclan is Xenophobic and doesn't respect Pine as a kittypet, but Brokenstar is just an evil leader... Happens, why would we need a new one?

Maybe the reason for "We can't save this life" is similar to why Scrouge's claws were so dangerous? Something so severe even Starclan additional lifes can't save you from.
"average leader gets 9 lives per ceremony" factoid actualy just statistical error. average leader gets 0 lives per ceremony. Lives Georg, who lives in starclan & gains over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
But... Tigerstar II only has 8 lives. He was given one and it was taken to revive him. Then he got the others as usual. He has the exact same amount of lives as Windstar by the end of her ceremony. Windstar was the same way, hers was still basically given and then taken for her to be revived. The wiki even has his as being taken to bring him back to life.
Something I think should be mentioned is that inconsistencies when it comes to starclan is usually experienced by someone who had a strong connection. Eg, shadowsight, firestar, and jayfeather.
In my stories I just completely recreated StarClan. Gave myself a set system for just about everything. Is it entirely canon? No. And I’m in case that’s a good thing.
I think starclan should stop giving leaders lives and give them all to jayfeather

I was thinking a cool headcanon could be that the reason firestar, blackstar, and leafpaw feel like they're dying is because either Endgame Rebirth symbolism (kittypet and redeemed jerkwad) or something something at odds with starclan (future code-breaker), but onestar kinda throws a wrench in that unless i'm forgetting something smh (maybe something about the shotgun deputy appointment ig??)

Well, Tigerstar II was dead, right? And StarClan needed Tigerstar II to lead ShadowClan. So, when he was getting his lives, they gave him 9. If the cat's old life was included in this, that would mean the cat had 10 lives. No, the cat doesn't. So the death feeling must be StarClan *killing* the cat's old life and giving it 9 more. What about the spirit of the old life? Well, it's mentioned in one of the books Firestar's spirit in StarClan, though he had not died fully yet. It is *possible*, not *the truth*, that Tigerstar II's old life made its way into StarClan. Then you have Windstar. Windstar was severely injured, and she got her lives, like Tigerstar II. Here is a part from the fandom: "However, in Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight receives a vision to take Wind Runner to the Moonstone as the leader is severely injured. Wind Runner loses her original life, but by then StarClan has already bestowed her additional eight lives, also renaming her Windstar." In this section, Windstar was said to have died after her getting lives. How StarClan could see the future I am not sure, but this is what I understand. Nightstar didn't get nine lives because Brokenstar was still alive. . . Why is this when Tigerstar II, Windstar and Sunstar all had it differently? And Brokenstar was also on his final life. So this makes it even *more* confusing. Nightstar should've gotten *eight*, not *none*. "When she receives the answer, she then decides to keep him prisoner and to call him by his warrior name, Brokentail, stating that he is no longer a leader in the sight of StarClan." -Fandom. If he is no longer a leader, shouldn't that just add more proof as to why Nightstar should get *nine* or even *eight* lives. Unless Bluestar was *wrong*, and StarClan still saw Brokenstar as the leader of ShadowClan. But this doesn't explain why Nightstar should get no more lives instead of getting nine or eight.
Unless I'm getting this wrong, Nightstar's writing was the bad part of all this.

I could be completely wrong, but MAYBE what Starclan meant by “we can’t do anything about that life” is that, even though Windrunner was dying, she was still alive, so they couldn’t give her all nine because a cat can’t hold ten lives at once??? And Tigerstar was already dead so they could give him all nine? But that only works if you believe what Firestar said about leaders getting stripped of their original life, and believe that for some reason Starclan was unable to strip Windrunner of that life she was losing.
another commenter pointed out how firestar saw a faint ghostly version of himself when he lost a life and jayfeather saw that faint version of him in starclan too- so maybe its more of a take your life and divide it into 9 so each time you're another 1/9 dead and in starclan or something (doesnt explain anything, but i wonder what the intent was taking that "fraction" of a ghost into account lol)
also, remember when Jayfeather saved Poppyfrost by meeting her in starclan and leading her back to the living? ofc jay is an outlier and implied to possibly be more powerful than starclan itself, but if it works in terms of just yeeting the spirit back into the body as its in the process of dying, i wonder if leader lives work similarly somehow?
also also, if we get deep into it, it can be assumed that there is a higher higher power above starclan, that makes the prophecies and dictates what individual starclan cats can/can't do-- maybe it only allows starclan a limited amount of power at a time based on... something, which is why there's a limit on how much they can give (and because they dont want leaders to be straight up immortal lol) and this level of power fluctuates over time. And why sometimes the starclan cats were able to fight in the real world while at other times they were basically useless.
we all know the real answer is that the writers just didn't bother making it consistent or giving a reasonable explanation, but the concept of a power ruling over starclan is fun to speculate about.
