These behind-the-scenes equipment testing videos are very interesting. It gives an idea what a quality factory operation does to ensure a top-notch product.

Loving these videos, and yes I'd like to see the video about where to tie the shooting line on the spear.

Great video! Regarding attachment of shooting line here my humble thoughts...
Pros of attaching to a rear hole:
-Very hydrodynamic when attached to rear hole.
-When shaft penetrates through fish (flies through and exits the body of the fish) it is easy to pull it back through the shot hole - recovering the shaft quickly after a shot and getting rapidly ready to reload the gun.
-When shooting into caves or other structure the spearo can pull the shaft line and shaft will (usually) not get stuck when pulled out. Of course, there is still the flopper that might get stuck when open.
-When shooting through hard material (skull, bones) the shooting line is a bit more protected than when attaching the shooting line to a front hole.
    Cons:
-Cannot be used with spearguns that have very narrow trigger mechanism (no space for attached shooting line).
-Cannot be applied to guns with enclosed track (ET)
-When the shaft flies through the body of the fish and spearo pulls to retrieve the fish, the spear can most go backwards through the wound and will not act as a ‘slip tip’ against the fish.
Comment: shafts without shark fins and having only notches have a better chance to travel through the body of the fish (no tabs / shark fins offering resistance).
Would be great to have a video from RA about this!
    Cheers from Panama >

Biggest issue of rear holes is they have bad performance with roller heads...
Unless RA can explain how to get those shafts workable with rollers/double roller heads I would be gratefull.
After speaking with many people on the topic it seems unworkable so you either have to replace the shaft, or weld a notch with hole or drill hole before the fins/noches.
I found the issue with ermes double roller heads and others (including custom manufacturers) had same issues with Manny's too.
The issue was both with 1.8mm and 1.5mm dyneema to the rear hole as drop barbs have only rear hole (unfortunately), long shafts 170-190-210cm also lack resting tabs RA... It's painfull to load 140cm gun with 190cm shaft even with loading assist as 176cm person.

@@mikefue9597 Good point, I'd forgotten about that. Yes, shooting line ahead of the notch or fin on a roller makes it so much easier to use. When behind (rear hole) the shooting line is trapped under the rubber and, if the shooting line is not wrapped very tight, can get dragged into the roller, affecting speed and accuracy of the spear. All pretty much eliminated with the shooting line being attached ahead of the notch or fin.

@@RobAllenSpearfishing have you maybe redesigned the drop barbs shafts? Unfortunately my two guns suffer from the issue with 190cm drop barbs with fins from you :F and I'm currently in a process of deciding what to do about it...
      1. look for another slip tip
      2. drill hole ahead
      3. Weld line holder ahead...
Both 2 and 3rd solution seem to have its issues...
      2. The line going through hole is also dragged at narrowest point through head affecting speed/accuracy... As real width is shaft diam + line diam on both sides. The heads have very little room even with 1.5mm fine dyneema attached
      3. Welding a line holder on top - I heard so many stories how difficult it is to weld them without warping shafts...
The lack of resting tab is something I can without it but the above got us kinda annoyed to say the least

I’ve seen an Omer shaft snap in two after shooting a trevally in a cave. Broke at the shark fin. It’s why I’ve always used your RA shafts. Never failed me. Hardest to bend or flex and very straight.

I hear y’all are starting to make the shark fin spears. Looking forward to those! Love Rob Allen spears but have had 2 snap at the notches on cobias.
    Love the factory videos!

My 2cents - such testing is good when you can shoot without obstacles after the fish, problem arises with shafts bending mostly at the flopper hole when not having clear shots. The G forces on those shots are tremendous. We have seen very 'good quality' shafts 7mm bend with single 14mm rubber :-) thats something not what you really should expect

Unfortunately there has to be a hole to fit the barb. I have had a spear bend on the barb when shot into a fishes head. If the tip of the spear is deflected after hitting a bone at just the right angle in the head, this can deflect the tip side ways enough to bend. The resistance of the fish creates just enough force in the water to create this. The fish in this case was concussed from absorbing the full momentum but the spear was destroyed. We have considered drilling smaller holes through the spear but then the barb pin will have to be reduced and.... another week point.

Hi Rob, i would like to add another flopper to my spears, but none of the drill bits that ive bought have worked..., what drill bit would you recommend?

    • @RobAllenSpearfishing
      @RobAllenSpearfishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi, drilling this high tensile steel is very difficult. The steel hardness is similar to that of a kitchen knife, not sure if you have ever tried to drill a hole in a knife blade.
It is not only the drill bit that you need. We have custom drill bits made which we use in a custom drill jig. This is then irrigated under pressure with a blend of cutting fluids. This is the only way we have found it to work efficiently.
You can try carbine drill bits but they are expensive and, if you break one in the spear, you will unlikely get it out. 2 or 3 drill bits are about the same as a spear here.

      @jysonkarshagen3174 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you! Yes, i figued, because nothing was working...
I had found a video on Daniel Mann's channel where he used a carbine drill bit, and it worked, but he had also made his own jig.
