The M44 engine is great, it gives a great noise, and exciting performance at more sensible speeds. It's an idea to look at NA improvements, but supercharging seems a very accesible option. For now though I am more worried about the bodywork than the poke :)
Thanks Gareth. Still love the M44 engine, it is very rewarding on tight country roads, so deserves a bit of love. There is enough room for a party, and we're having it!
This little refresher came at the right time. I'm about to do this job on my Z3 1.9. I had the same problem with the water pump on my M43 engined E36. I ended up taking the radiator out and using a slide hammer.
Awesome! If I accelerate in too low a gear, or before the torque is being produced, I get squeaks from the front. You've given me confidence to take some plastic off and inspect the belts. Thank you!!
Oh, the water pump troubles... Did mine few months ago, filmed everythign but not had the time to edit the video, te process and used tools and methods were the same as yours. It took me a few hours to get it out, but eventualy it gave up. Great video, cheers!
Thanks. Seems like the all seem to give the same problems. Maybe it's the decades of corrosion that is the problem. They should just pop out but never do. Take care.
I've got this engine in an e30 and the owner couldn't get the temperature gauge to get to the middle, it only loves slightly as if its always cold when its not due to the temperature sensor being incompatible with the e30, wonder how i can get this fixed:| Otherwise its a brilliant engine, lovely and raspy and i'd recommend doing a coil on plug conversion, as it's supposed to make it more efficient especially on the m42/44 platform and able to cope with higher octane fuel and use of a supercharger / turbo. I was going to put the supercharger kit on it i had been given but will sell it as I love how well it is as a all round daily.
If you put in a brown sensor, which the E30 would have had initially it should work fine. Maybe it is the thermostat? You are right it is a fantastic engine, really gives you pleasure when you are pushing it.
Nice, strange about the temp gauge, is it an E30 cluster with the E30 temp sensor? If yes, maybe the M44 is designed to run cooler than the E30s original engine and you should mark your new "up to temp" on the gauge. 😄 There may be a way to calibrate it, or maybe you can pop the needle off and reset it, although then your 0 would be in the wrong place. Interesting suggestion about the coil-on-plug, I've seen that but wasn't sure why. If I have coil issues it will definitely be something I look into. They are great engines in NA form, not blisteringly powerful but they sound and feel great, and its nice to be able to keep your foot in. A very satisfying drive. Although a supercharger could feel and sound great too, a definite temptation! Cheers
@@SPANNERRASH Thanks, yes it’s an e30 cluster but I think with a e36 temp sensor so I may try with an e30 sensor. The coil on plug is supposed let the spark plugs spark more as it should without delay so it’s sharper apparently so worth a look although the bmw cover will have be taken off to fit Best of luck with the e36!
I’m unable to find a replacement heater matrix anywhere for mine with BMW saying they won’t supply it anymore and all on EBay that won’t fit, does anybody know where I can find one ?
It might cost a bit more but maybe you could have one made. I think if it came to it that is the route I would investigate. The heater matrix is just a radiator really, and there are a lot of companies makeing custon raidiators. Good luck.
@@SPANNERRASHthanks for the reply, good idea, speaking to an Autocooling specialist tomorrow so hopefully they can come up with something! Please keep these videos coming as there’s not enough content on the 318ti’s out there
Great timing, doing all the coolant parts on my 318ti currently as well!
I hope you have an easier time with the water pump than we did. Good luck!
@@SPANNERRASH unfortunately seems to be haha
Finaly some love to the m44 engine. It would be nice to see more upgrades on this and how to add some NA power to mine.

M42* you mean
The space down the front of the engine is huge on a 4-pot! Top work, as per

A slide hammer is a nice idea, probably a lot less destructive, and you may as well take the rad out at this stage anyway. Cheers!
Good idea. Might use it next time. But as always I hope there wont be a next time :)

My belt looked really grim, I was surprised it hadn't snapped. Quite easy to change though. Good luck.
glad to see an E36 video again, hope to see more. very useful and well documented, cheers
Thanks. Hopefully it will get a little more love over the next few weeks. I am taking it on a holiday soon, not anywhere too exotic.
nearly bought a e36 compact with a m52 b28 upgrade
kind of wished i did now
I bet you do!! The M44 is a good engine, rewarding at real road speeds. But everybody wants a 2.8, look at our E30 build :)
the M42/m44 with a supercharger is a good power combo (probably cheaper than a swap)

Nice, yeah it's a shame they seize in so hard, never known anything like it, was the same when we did an M40 too. A real battle.

There aren't many problems a 4lb sledgehammer can't solve 😂 . Well done!
Haha agreed! You know you mean business when the big hammer comes out. 😆
