I've played a build very similar to this! Bugbear beast barb 6/soul knife rest of the way. Expertise in athletics, made him a grappler. SUPER fun, great build as always, thanks!
A modern classic, well done! One variation would be beast 6/soulknife 14; gives you all magical attacks by level 9, which may or may not be relevant depending on campaign. You would miss out on the wisdom saving throw proficiency from rogue 15, but honestly, rogue has a bonus ASI at their level 10, you can squeeze resilient wisdom somewhere! Alternative race would be anything gnome; by barb 2, you would have a crazy defensive structure - strength and Con proficiency, advantage on Dex saves (and later evasion), and advantage on any mental save vs magic!
Dude! I didn't think Soulknife couldn't get any more amazing. My honorable mentions: Shield Master. If DEX was 3 points higher, I'd also recommend Medium Armor Master. Starting with a Giant Foundling Background nets you Strike of the Giants right at lv1.
I still think that both paladin or moon druid combat assassination-wise or stars skill-wise dip are also really good. For races wildhunt shifter is of course great on any barbarian, but dhampir or harengon would strong too.
I came up with one just the other day where I take my first two levels as a basic rogue, and then upon gaining level 3 something turns me into an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer. I haven't decided what that would be, but also I don't necessarily have to understand it. Then I'd go back to Soulknife and be mostly rogue, probably take Sorcerer up to 5 or 6 at some point to get 3rd level spells and the subclass abilities. You could choose all your spells primarily to buff yourself if you don't want to put a lot of points into Charisma.
Yeah this is spot on flavorwise. There are a lot of useful features/spells in the Sorc kit that would compliment this. CS also works really well with our ability to add dice to ability checks
I made a Plasmoid Soulknife with a level of Barbarian for unarmored defense. No weapons, no armor, sliding under doors. It was pretty fun
I am playing one right now! Instead I went Soulknife/Warlock with Armor of Shadows invocation. So much fun!

I love this subclass ❤️❤️❤️
Oh boy. Wait until he finds out the Bear/ Phantom build.
