- Maxson Goh Films the good days when a fleet of Volvo B10M MKIV Duple Metsec DM3500 equipped with Voith DIWA 863.3 gearbox. Now, the newer and frankly, rather horrid Scania K230UB Gemilang buses have taken over the entire fleet. Lets visit the good days when there were actually good buses on Cross Border 160 and 170.

This was my favourite/childhood SBST bus to ride. But it due to the fact I lived in Bukit Panjang area, it was quite rare since there were little few SBST operating there. Apparently I saw it on 170 but we only take 170 when going on holidays. And probably the last Strider/DM3500 I spotted was on 2013. Quite young back then. I will never forget these memories of spotting the legendary old Volvo B10Ms
They had nice engine sound and if they were still around, I can share about them with the next generation

This bus gave me alot of memories 😂😂 going in and out of JB and to accidentally vomited inside the bus at the busstop near the old sheng siong market beside woodlands train checkpoint

last time before the checkpoint got rainbow buidling, when i come back from JB i always go to the mcdonalds there. very shiok!

The 170 bus was originally No.1 of the now-defunct Green Bus. It became 170 in 1971 after UBC and later on SBS took over the same route.

I've seen a Mercedes-Benz Citaro on service 170 before. How rare!

This was my no. 1 fav bus
Volvo B10M MKIV replaced by Scania K230UB E4 in 2014.
Scania K230UB E4 replaced by MAN A22 E5, MAN A22 E6, Citaros in 2022.
Interesting to see different types of buses being use for cross border services now, especially with lta/sbs using newer buses like MAN A22 E6. Many thought sbs & lta would have choosen the Euro V KUB but i guess their lifespan isnt far off from the Euro IV. Looking forward for those debuts though😁

2 bus models now have gone into History on these cross borders. First the Legendary B10Ms and now the Scania K230UB Euro 4s. The current fleet of 170/160 are MAN A22s and Citaros.

Now replaced with scratched up KUBs & Citaros (Citaros aren't even scratched up but you get the point)
After those KUBs taken over the fleet it marks Service 160/170 become wheelchair accessible
Remember when everybody hated the K230UBs that replaced the Volvo Marks? Now that K230UB is no longer serving cross border people miss it

I remember 2013/2014 taking this buses on service 170 to Larkin , but now this buses doesn't exist anymore and has been replaced by the KUBS..., I was really excited though when the KUBS replaced the B10M's Because I don't really like those buses...

the blue plates are only for service 170 ending at kranji mrt instead of queen street or kota raya ii bus terminal
Blue (170X) - Kranji MRT to Kotaraya II Terminal (which the terminal is gone now)
Red (170) - Queen Street Terminal to Larkin Terminal
So that's the bus model with desto
on the present day, 160, 170 and 170x are full of Scania K230UB

As of today, a total of 11 kubs on 170 were redrawn and is awaiting to be de registered. Tbh i am surprised, why did sbs/lta decided to redrawn 11 buses? I also wonder what buses will take over. Citaros? Also i regreted hating the kubs, their a lot better than electric buses. I had thought we still had a lot of time till 2024(e4 lifespan ends then) but many are already been de registered already. Looks like time is running out for the rest of them. Recently Ulu Pandan Depot took in a huge number of sg plated citaros, i wonder why🤔
The new buses on cross-border services are the MB Citaros, some MAN A22 E5 and E6. Electric buses could be next.
Do you need a passport to ride these buses?
for the Singapore sector no passport is needed, only the cross border sectors then a passport is required
I heard before the September 11th attacks happened, people were free to drive across the US/Canada border without a passport. You just need to show your drivers licence, that's all. I wonder if the same thing applied to the Singapore/Malaysia border before 9/11.
If you are travelling Between Singaopore u dont need a passport, the last stop before it reaches checkpoint is Block 1A . If ur going to malaysia,you need a passport even though ur on this bus

I liked the B10Ms, but what was so great about them?
Personally to me it's because they were the buses I grew up with. I believe a the greatness of a bus stems heavily from one's personal connection with it. Reliability wise from what I observed they don't break down as often as modern buses. This is merely my observation and might not reflect the actual reliability accurately.
@@glitchFan2428 Makes sense, I felt this way about my hometown's buses in Seattle, WA when the last fully diesel buses were retired from service. Re "it not reflect actual reliability": This I can assure you of because I have studied psychology and people do respond to perception rather than reality, and considering that we often want to return to our childhood when we have stresses of real life, I can feel you.
