I like Hank's quiet voice. It's such a change from his normal excited voice it makes me smile.

The video itself is amazing but I can't stand anymore the endless flow of speech in all the videos these days.
The 9:43 minutes of footage was covered by 9:40 minutes of uninterrupted speech, that's tiresome

As a researcher working with micro-scale imaging, I find these kinds of both beautiful and medically relevant results inspiring.
I can’t believe this is the humble zebra Danio that’s so common in aquariums! I’d love to have a print of those photos, they’re truly beautiful 😍
it's also heavily relied upon in evo devo research (evolutionary developmental bio) as is the Aftican clawed frog which is also common to the aquarium hobby
I think scientists were initially interested in its zebra stripes pattern forming. It eventually became so widespread in labs that was turned into a "model species" for research (the simplest vertebrate of them)

We find these zebra danios swimming in even the most transient watery rice or paddy fields here in Bengal. They're extremely resilient and active little fish, both in the wild and in aquaria.
Love this video, it's a nice break from microbiology. I use transgenic fluorescent zebrafish for investigating human craniofacial birth defects, so I appreciate a video like this showcasing what we do. When you tell people you're doing genetics work with fish to learn about human disease, it sounds really boring. I'll use this video as a visual aide now.

It's interesting how the lymphatic vessels follow the pattern of the scales down the sides of the body. Makes sense, just not something I would have thought of.
Im very happy that the researchers anesthetized that fish and got the cross sections via optical means rather than killing the fish to do their research.
The 3D model of these images are literally how I (try to) imagine life and the physical world as. Never knew there were these detailed 3D models - I'm seriously so mind-blown!
For a couple years we have "real time" (time lapses) 3D models of live cells/animals
The semiconductor industry uses the image stacking technology to examine the test fixtures used to test microchips. The process is actually easy, with a little practice.
I have seen the cut spinal cord of a Zebrafish regrow after 3 days. I have no idea how they do it, but unlike humans they can fully recover their neurons.
It's not just zebra danios, I do a lot of fishing and have caught multiple species that at one point were literally broken yet survive and are fully functional ( kinda)

Something about having so much life on our planet. Knowing it’s in the very soil and air we interact with. I find beautiful.
I was part of a developmental biology lab recently that used a close relative of Zebrafish, Cichlids, as a way to try and understand monogamous behavior in-situ. By staining certain pathways in Cichlids and then comparing those pathways to Zebrafish's ones and scouting for differences, we're in the early stages of understanding why monogamy might arise physiologically. Zebrafish and their kin have a lot of use in science!

I'd hoped the competition would get some of the images into public domain so we could legally copy and use them (as, for example a desktop image). It doesn't, so all the competition images are copyright protected unless out of copyright for other reasons. Most photo competitions don't do that, but a few do. Anyone know if a microphotography competition that does?

The images in this video are simply stunning. From the Nikon photography competition, to the 3d model composed of 2d images, it just reminds me that the future is here today. Seeing a 3d reconstruction of a living organism without invasive imaging just blows my mind, as it is something I'd expect to see in Star Trek or something. Our age has its problems to be sure, but there is no other time in human history I'd rather live in. Scientists from just a century ago would say we've discovered magic; what will we have to say of the people in another century or so?

I though this was gonna be about the third eye of zebrafishes and the relation to our pineal gland, another time perhaps. This was intresting too! Beutiful images as well.
I have been a subscriber for several years now to scishow and (more recently to this channel), but I never could hear Hank's voice in this channel and only realised that it is him after he said it in this video. I am mindblown right now.

Would you address in one of your shows, the artifacts in fixed microscopy and electron microscopy? Artifacts resulting from physisical/chemical changes as a result of the slide preparation and use of dyes?
What is the impact of those artifacts on the development of thesis and theories? How to validate them?

@@limiv5272 As I understand, fur must be gone after a mouse is treated with all those solvents. Or they just use furless mice, Im not sure.
