The Mauler twins ONLY work because none of them really know who's the clone (even though they should be able to remember what side they laid down on), so when one was marked, it just didn't work, they would rather KNOW that they were both clones but argue who was the oldest.
It's actually shown with Robot's cloning that both the original and the new body have memories of laying down first and the entire process, as such even if there was a way to tell which bed the original laid down on, the other has the same memories of starting the process, and as such an equal claim that they are the 'original' and the clone is just misremembering things.
They explained that the machine kinda scrambles your mind when copying it and putting it in the clone body, so neither can remember what side the original was on. This was intentional because if one knows he's the original, it just leads to infighting.

Calling the clone an “inferior” is, I think, misguided arrogance. As in the correct way to be arrogant is to say “my cloning process is perfect- he’s every bit the man I was, I am, we are gods of life”
the main problem I can pull from the Mauler twins is through process of elimination plus their dangerous life style. The more violent/better at combat one will generally out live the other and this cycle repeats and what you find is the mauler twins gradually will become more violent and psychopathic that they basically turn into organic killing drones.
Sure, the more violent ones should survive more often but also i think that clever clones hard counter any twin that end up too psychotic. Like with the poisoned lemonade.
If SOMA taught me anything, it’s that whoever is a clone is unimportant. What is important is what you do with that knowledge. The Mauler Twins are an example of a person being so narcissistic and egomaniacal, that they assume that the original person must be superior to the inferior, which is totally untrue. The fact that the Mauler Twins know to keep who is the original and who is the clone a secret, because they know that they will kill each other if one and/or the other finds out, only just goes to prove that fact, and how Mauler is unwilling to accept that he is in fact a copy of himself. No matter how many copies of himself he makes, no matter how many times he is reborn as a copy, he’s only coping with his own manufactured existence. If Mauler learned to accept the fact that he is a clone, to forego his evil ways and accept peace within himself, then any clone that he produced from himself would end up just as at peace with that fact as he is himself, and they could function together as a duo without hurting each other. And considering how adept he is at bioengineering and cloning, if he decided to use his skills for good, he could’ve ended up using his abilities to better mankind instead of using it to worsen humanity, just to forge more bars for his own caged mind.
Actually Cloning a clone does damage the Genetic material of said clone via Genetic and cellular degradation you can only copy a copy so much before the mutations in the genes pop in, which makes the Original Clone technically superior.
