An interesting theory is that Greek politicians and philosophers (Plato and Aristotle) had said that democracy will eventually fall to tyranny and the ruler who takes power is generally the son of an aristocrat who was democratic and someone the public generally trusts and likes (at first). But the ruler slowly turns his back on the general population and take total control of the government to serve his own selfish desires. After a time of tyranny he gets overthrown in favor of democracy again and then the cycle eventually repeats itself.
Let's not forget why the rhetoric of the Brothers Gracchi became so violent. After the Punic Wars, the soldiers came back to their farms to find their families evicted and their land stolen by Senators who formed them into slave-run plantations called latifundia. These displaced veterans along with their families flooded Rome, forming the Proletarii. They were pissed about the loss of their lands and livelihoods. And the Senate had refused to listen. That is, until their case was heard by a Tribune of the Plebs, Tiberius Gracchus. Gracchus wasn't a rabble-rouser, he wasn't a demagogue. He was a revolutionary hero of a class of people who were betrayed by the very Republic they fought and bled for.

White America is being judged for 400 years of white supremacy and institutional racism. The suicide rate for white males especially in the State of Montana continues to increase. White supremacy is on the rise because they know their time is up. After slavery ended, black Americans and other minority populations were actively and legally oppressed, segregated, excluded, and subjugated for another hundred years. None of this is ancient history. Some Jim Crow laws are technically still on the books, and there are still people alive who remember having to sit in the back of the bus. Why did those things happen? Because the nature of power is that people who have it want to keep it, and white people have always held the power in America. White people decided that all of those unjust laws were okay, and throughout our history, white people were the only ones with the power to undo them. And the fact remains that white people still hold the power in America. One of the most obvious examples of that is our current Republican-controlled Congress. Do you know what percentage of congressional Republicans are white? 94.5% When white Americans decry race-baiting and “identity politics,” I have to chuckle. White people have played the race card and engaged in race-based identity politics throughout our entire political history. White people are the ones who created racist laws. White people are the ones who segregated schools and pools and drinking fountains. Racial inequalities exist because of how white people used their power since America began. Humans aren't deer. Human social groups have ALWAYS organized into hierarchies. From the nuclear family to the small business to the huge corporations to the military, the natural human social order is hierarchical
I disagree about you 2 comparing the USA to something along the lines of a Rome or Roman type carrying on of government or its People. We are more akin to Babylon, at least in my time of being alive, I am 62. In that everything is about the money, for the money, because of the money. More subtle when I was younger as when I entered the work force it was easy to make a "good" living because of the pay & standard of living at the time. However as the People, the working class have declined in being taken seriously, being listened to for policy, as corporations rose in the "greed is good" generation America has fallen to being more for the moneyed interests than for the People. BLATANTLY SO! Government Of the Money, by the Money, for the Money! NOT, Governance, of the People, by the People, for the People! Just Saying
The U.S. empire started to fall long ago. But it is now falling rapidly since January 20, 2017. The U.S. is now the poorest country of the First World.
We have reached the 'feet of iron and clay' of Nebuchadnezzar's dream image (Dan 2). There is no other earthly empire to rise beyond the Anglo American World Power
There were far-left movements in Germany and Italy fighting on the streets against fascists and the current order. The Russian revolution and Trotsky's ideas, the Spanish civil war were also crucial factors.
I recently listened to a public radio program discussing Rome in it's current, modern day form (European states, United States, and Vatican.) To not discuss it's current form, is teetering on deceptive.
The United States was founded on the principles of Life, Liberty, and Property. The Founders looked at democracy with distrust, which is why, in the early period of the nation, voting was (in certain states) restricted to white males owning property. Fortunately, the property requirements were quickly dropped and (after much struggle, civil war, and constitutional amendments), the right to vote became universal. Nonetheless, democracy can be a dangerous business; Alexis De Tocqueville (in the 1840's) noted the danger that any republic can be destroyed when the voters discover that they can vote themselves other peoples' property. We have constitutional safeguards against such criminal tendencies. Jefferson made this clear when he stated that such criminal tendencies can be "bound down with the chains of constitution". There are no guarantees for the future. The best approach to preserving the republic is (in my opinion) moderation. It's important to avoid polarizing tendencies. Don't demonize people that you disagree with. Avoid rash and shameful methods such as attempts to pack the Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College. (The purpose of the Electoral College is the same as the U.S. Senate; it is a way to ensure that small states have some say in the order of things.) Most importantly, avoid doing anything to incite people to lawlessness and violence. Once violence becomes an accepted tool of politics, the republic will collapse.
Trump is the most destabilizing factor in the current culture. He s wicked ruler devoid of morality and commonsense. He s wjite tradh wanting to be a dictator. For his own economic gain wake up america. Its over. Tired of winning yet.

THE FIRST & LONGEST STANDING STATE IN HISTORY WAS KEMET THAT YOU CALL EGYPT NOT ROME
Wow very informative
America is too strong to be like Rome, We can prevent it now, work together
Thank you for speaking your mind in Portland.
And Tiberius Gracas who was an advocate for marginalized Romans own younger brother himself became a populus politician as well and maybe a decade later suffered the same fate as well being murdered by his political enemies.
Soon! This century for sure, thanks to trump!
Thank you you always make me think
Look at the British Empire of 100 years ago. Where is it now?
Brexiting for fun and profit....er, scratch that last. More like deep doodoo.
Notice that this was recorded pre-January 6!
It already fell....just most of you don't realize it yet. But you will.
Maybe you can show us with your drone.
Agreed! It’s falling RIGHT NOW! They are deliberately collapsing the dollar but most people are still asleep thinking the economy is the best ever!!
Don't see it but it can Get Cataclismic. Self-Destruct. Fanatism destroys....
"The Goths are at the gates". It won't be long now.
Tiberious = Natanyahoo
@Tom Bombadil ~ Yeah, they come to make " contributions" to PACs !
Herein lies Fear....Leverage your fear if wish this not to happen. Concur it, and learn what it is, do something about it.
The tech won't let us correct it this time..
Not without a full shutdown of the grid...
Then imagine a world that doesn't have industry to fuel it, when it's necessary for it to exist in the numbers that we have...
Either way....
There is no end in this, where it ends well with the current morality associated...
an important factor in the fall of rome is not only political mismanagement, but also the lack of ability to defend ever-expanding borders. america has much clearer borders which it can defend, but intellectually america has very rigid borders rather than expanding ones. this is the problem. the religious dystopia of the puritans is alive and well.
Our country has been on a decline for awhile and now with trump the fiture looks grim.
The sooner the better
Fear not my children. Life is a ride.
Uh yeah... Fast and hard around thanksgiving... Black Friday.
Thom speaks more than his guest.
I'm watching this in 2020 🤔..
But if Rome had the internet they would of fallen much faster.
History repeats itself. .
600 billionaires in USA do control the 325 million in the USA. It is just a question of how much.
It starts with a living wage and leisure time for civic activitiesu.
One of the most obvious examples of that is our current
Republican-controlled Congress. Do you know what percentage of congressional Republicans are white? 94.5%
When white Americans decry race-baiting and “identity politics,” I have
to chuckle. White people have played the race card and engaged in
race-based identity politics throughout our entire political history.
White people are the ones who created racist laws. White people are the
ones who segregated schools and pools and drinking fountains. Racial
inequalities exist because of how white people used their power since
America began.

If Thom did a show on TH-cam and no one saw it, did Thom really do a show?
I can't Wait
At 25 mins i said that years ago the roman Empire just basically transformed it never ended
i don't mind usa falling, but i will be grumpy if they take the rest of the planet with them.
Humans aren't deer. Human social groups have ALWAYS organized into hierarchies. From the nuclear family to the small business to the huge corporations to the military, the natural human social order is hierarchical
Next Thursday at 4.30 pm
Political violence like that used against the Water Protectors at Standing Rock?
Facebook won’t let me share this
if you are on Facebook, you are part of the problem, in my opinion.
Facebook sucks; do what a lot of us have done; delete your account & get free!
It began with the Oakland Raiders declared move to Vegas
Can't fall soon enough .
Republican!😒
Just Saying
You can be sure, the ''next stage'' is where America's heading.
America will never fall because Americans harbor deep love for one another, across cultures even.
Sure it will it is just a matter of time.
The U.S. empire started to fall long ago. But it is now falling rapidly since January 20, 2017. The U.S. is now the poorest country of the First World.
I see the parallels but keep in mind that the world has never been connected like it is today. America is to big to fail.
DR.HARTMAN I'M LOOKING AT CHINA POWER ALL OVER THIS WORLD TODAY THANKS FOR THE WATCH
As with Conald Trump, the worst emperors abused their positions of power and wealth to undermine the empire and its people.
Yeah so only four Roman senators owned all the agricultural exports from northern Africa to Rome in mid empire. No comparison to us. None.
We have reached the 'feet of iron and clay' of Nebuchadnezzar's dream image (Dan 2). There is no other earthly empire to rise beyond the Anglo American World Power
China sure is trying awful hard. I wouldn't put it past 'em.
Senate; it is a way to ensure that small states have some say in the order of things.)
Most importantly, avoid doing anything to incite people to lawlessness and violence. Once violence becomes an accepted tool of politics, the republic will collapse.
Yes.
Trump is the most destabilizing factor in the current culture. He s wicked ruler devoid of morality and commonsense. He s wjite tradh wanting to be a dictator. For his own economic gain wake up america. Its over. Tired of winning yet.
It died in 2016 .
Stock market is going Crazy
The mis-characterization of the Gracchis is terribly wrong. You compared the Gracchis with the Brown shirts, and I noticed you did not even mention the generalissimo Sulla, or was he the good guy in this history? C’mon!
Thom, I'm nearly half your age, but I've seen the downfall on the horizon since my veil was removed following military service, more than 10 years ago. The previous election was the beginning of the visible, bumpy end. Now, I'm just looking to move away. A beautiful country destroyed from its inception.
Has anyone lost hope for the United States or it that just me???
