  • We start working on the MCI today and see if we can get it running. It's only been 2 years so it should go.

    This bus used to be white in color. I was a fuel jockey at Atlanta Gateway Truck Stop in Atlanta Ga (Duluth Ga) back in 73-75. I use to fuel this buss when it came through Atlanta. Good memories! Back in the day it was a one of a kind corporate bus. I'm assuming that Big Mac is referring to McDonalds.

    Not sure if any one has commented yet but that is the same rig "Bus Grease Monkey" got running a couple of years ago. Made a whole series on what he had to put together to get it going so the guy could drive it the 700 miles to get it home.

    "Coolant" isn't only to protect from freezing- it also raises the boiling
    temperature of the water, so you can keep those temperatures & pressures down,
    and it also lubricates the cooling system, fights corrosion and electrolysis.

      Exactly.. I have seen power generators for Aircraft lock up druning the summer because MX ran pure water in the system

    Trick to starting these old Detroit’s; cycle the glow plugs (if it has them) a couple times, crank on it a few seconds and let it rest, crank on it again (it should try starting) let it rest a few more seconds, cycle the glow plugs and crank on it, it should fire off. I cut my teeth on 71 Series Detroit both 6-71 and 8V71's in Astro 95's when I started pulling wrenches for a company named Luby Leasing back in 72'. Loved the Detroit, when I went to Ryder in 74' most of the guys there did not like the Detroit's so those were funneled to me for repairs. My dad worked with a gentleman in Memphis back in the early 70's who bought coaches like this and converted them to coaches for the Country Entertainers. That guys name was Jim Britton.

    You, any many others, it seems- "aren't fond of ether".
    First- it got a bad reputation from people using it incorrectly-
    "Starting Fluid" is ether and *Carnation White mineral oil* that
    must only be sprayed *WHILE CRANKING* in *3 second bursts.*
    The special low flash mineral oil lubricates the rings, valves & cylinders,
    helping to raise compression, aid in lowering rotational friction, and
    ignite easier than plain diesel.
    I see people all the time spray then crank, not spray enough, or
    spray way too much- risking a hydrolock. It will not "wash cylinders"
    or harm crankcase oil, when used *PROPERLY.*
    *Shake well*
    *Spray while cranking*
    *3 Second bursts*

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For those who didnt know: an engine with antifreeze runs cooler than just water. + it protects it from rusting.

    • @Spyke383
      @Spyke383  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was some still in it. But knowing its getting all new hoses and cleaned out when it gets back we didn't want to waste coolant.

    • @Austin8thGenTexan
      @Austin8thGenTexan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Antifreeze also contains lubricants - which make the water pump last far longer (and dissipates earlier) than the primary anti-freezing ingredients. 🛢️

    • @KSSilenceAU
      @KSSilenceAU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, engines (as in the physical engine components to be exact) with antifreeze coolant instead of plain DONT Run cooler, they run HOTTER! than those using straight water (not by much but they do with everything else being equal).
      Reason is that adding Antifreeze (Glycol) lowers the heat carrying capacity of Water, meaning that a given amount of Coolant mix has less heat capacity / transfer than that straight water. Now the reduced thermal capacity is partially offset by the somewhat increased boiling point but not totally.
      You might not see it in the Coolant temps much, but the actual physical components will be hotter with antifreeze due to reduced thermal transfer.
      Now if your somewhere where its freezing cold to the point that anti-freeze is a must, then the reduced thermal efficiency shouldn't be of any concern as you'll be running on the lower end of the thermostats regulating range in such conditions.
      So the best range to be in if you want maximum cooling ability while still having sufficient corrosion protection in Non-Freezing Conditions is around the 25-30% antifreeze, or lower if you add supplemental protection agents (eg Water Wetter) to make up for the reduced additives.
      Anti-freeze mixes below about 20% are actually more corrosive than plain water.
      In Freezing conditions, use a sufficiently strong mix to provide freeze protection against the expected low temperatures plus some safety margin.
      Vehicle manufacturers tend to specify a 50/50 mix because its a valid compromise that works suitably for most conditions in most places so its an easy default.
      almost all automotive Anti Freeze also have some nasty properties to them:
      It's Highly toxic (It will kill you or make you very sick if ingested, Except for the not very so common Propylene Glycol, which is actually food safe)
      If it gets into the oil for some reason, it absolutely destroys the oil's lubrication properties (Almost ALL Diesel Locomotives in Non-Freezing conditions do NOT use it as a result)
      it's slick in its own right (Hence race tracks usually ban it, and you can only run water + Water Wetter or Engine ice)
      Hopefully that gives you some useful insight.

    First, I think all flying insects for three or four miles down wind have met their maker. I hate to see those flapping belts, I am sure OSHA would like to see "belt guards" on them for safety reasons. (if they have jurisdiction over moving engines and I think they do) It sounds OK running to me also. Ron W4BIN
