- The first public display of rebuilt Polikarpov I -16 WW II fighters displayed at the Wanaka Air Show New Zealand in 1998. Mark Hanna flew in Number. 4 which is shown in this video clip. Mark was killed after landing a Hispano Buchon ME Bf 109 in Spain in 1999 prior to displaying at an Air Show.
Обидно за своего погибшего деда , что нашу советскую технику сохранили в далекой Новой Зеландии , а не у себя на Родине....Очень жаль... А ребятам большой поклон,что можем видеть летающий "ишачок" ,дай Бог им сил и здоровья продолжать свое дело.
+Саня Лютатовский вообще то их закупили в бывшем Чкаловском, когда по приказу гендира рашкостана училище закрыли. Ил2 продали кому то из Германии, а И153 и два И16 увезли в Н.З. Вся техника была в отличном состоянии и курсанты периодами летали над Борисоглебском. Но рашкованские свиньи и прочие ельциноиды решили что это баловство.
+PIO Piu Предполагаю это случилось в лихие 90-е, когда продавали всё и вся. Хотели покататься на иномарках, лол
90-е тут не при чём. Чкаловское расформировали при Ебне, а Иркутское вертолётное, которое перевели на его место уже при Пуклере. При нём собственно трендом является фраза "Она утонула...". Вот и Ишаки утонули. И в первую очередь потому, что курсанты спали в ещё Николаевских казармах где последний ремонт делали в 85 году, стены красили. А денег государство не выделяло, на парфэ не хватало урюуам. Вот потому и продали Ишаки, Чайки и Ила.
PIO Piu Один Ил, если ничего не путаю, был восстановлен у нас в 90-е и где-то даже летал своим ходом. Это именно тот, который продали?

В Далёкой Новой Зеландии летают наши самолёты, которые были построены еще до Второй Мировой войны! Поразительно , Восхитительно!!!!

I have to say I was very sad to hear of Mark Hanna's accident in 1999 I had seen him fly in lots of air shows and thought he was very professional and showed off the planes he flew with exceptional skill, rest easy.

Уйти нельзя - скорость у И-16 меньше, чем у «мессершмитта», на вертикаль нельзя - собьют. Выхода нет. Начал я с ними крутиться. Я как? Он в хвост зайдет, я вижу, что сейчас огонь откроет, я газ убираю, он проскакивает,
[58] я стреляю. Не попадал, конечно, тут, пока будешь прицеливаться, тебя следующий срубит. Иващенко в воздухе нет, думаю, наверное, сбили. Но я решил с ними ковыряться, пока силы есть. Слава богу, физическая подготовка у меня была хорошая. В итоге они развернулись и ушли в сторону Можайска. Горючее на исходе. Я спикировал, прижался к реке Нара и на бреющем домой. Через железнодорожный мост перевалил, а там уже наш аэродром. С ходу сажусь - аэродром был укатан целиком. Сел и рулю к стоянке. Вылез и иду в землянку КП. Смотрю, стоит командир полка и Иващенко, мой ведомый, ругается: «Дудник полез в драку и сам погиб». Он, конечно, не думал, что я в этой каше жив останусь. Я подошел: «Товарищ командир, прошу больше ведомым лейтенанта Иващенко ко мне не назначать, а дать мне сержанта Василия Соколова&;. Так вот благодаря тому, что я был на И-16, который на горизонтальном маневре превосходил «мессершмитт», они не могли меня сбить. Если был бы я на «миге» или «лавочкине», меня бы сбили - «лагг» так крутить не мог. На нем, конечно, можно на вертикаль идти, но против немецких летчиков 41-го года это вряд ли бы помогло.

Алексей Муравьёв рассказы про маневренность это смешно, скорость Bf109 выше в полтора раза - давала возможность мессеру входить и выходить из боя по своему усмотрению, не оставляя И-16 шансов. Маневренность у 16го кстати, не ахти по сравнению с И-15. Но! Никаких киношных манёвров никто не крутил на войне. Более 50% самолетов сбивалось первой атакой. Именно это вынудило СССР пойти на полную смену истребителей. Далеко не идиоты такие решения принимали, если был бы шанс этого не делать. Хорошо видно что на вертикали и вираже И-16 быстро теряет скорость из за слабого мотора; так что, увы, он может и неплох, но против 109 шансов практически не имел, что и показала жизнь.

Дедушки наши летали и на таких простых машинах лохматили не кого нибудь, а матёрых лютых немцев. А мы даже технику эту не сберегли. Позорники мы, а не наследники.
В музеях есть немного, для школьников, для истории. Но ведь в то время, переходя на новую технику, старую пускали на запчасти. А происходило это часто из-за нехватки материала. Время было такое. Никому ведь и в голову не могло прийти, что придёт время капитализма и частных коллекций, что будет востребовано старьё, и что на нём модно будет рассекать. И что то, за что боролись и сложили голову миллионы наших предков, пойдёт прахом. Если б знали - ход истории был бы совсем иным.

Great to see the old I-16 still flying. I understand they are not terribly easy to fly for long periods, with no provision for trimming at all! Astonishing that any remain after the beating they took from the Germans. Note the apparent installation of an on-board starter... :)

To the best of my understanding, all the Polikarpov aircraft Tim Wallace took delivery of were scratch built in the original factory in Novosibirsk, by some of the same people who originally built them in the 1930s (albeit already pensioners by that time). There are none in Russia that I know of, flying or otherwise. I think you correctly assume that they were practically wiped out during the early months of Operation Barbarossa.

My late father in law was an aviation mechanic with the Spanish Republican Air Force during the Spanish Civil War (1936/39) and worked on this Moscas and the Chatos at an airfield between Sabadell and Barcelona, Spain.
They were bombed by Germans several times and he witnessed dogfights between the Moscas and the German fighters above the airfield.

Thank you very much to people of New Zealand who live so far from Russia, but some of them still remember about the legendary Soviet warplanes. I-16 is a legend of the Soviet air force, but I'm not sure if there are some flying samples on the territory of ex-USSR.

I also saw a resemblance to a geebee! Very short tail moment and very high drag but - what a wonderful sound. Sad loss Mark getting killed - I had the good fortune years ago to watch Ray Hanna putting an AT 6 through it's paces as well as a North Armerican Harvard. So good to see these old birds still flying.

Was at wanaka warbirds 2012 show this year, it's a shame that they don't display these aircraft anymore or the I-153 biplane they also had flying in 1998.
Sir Tim Wallace put so much time and effort into restoring these aircraft and getting them back to new zealand to show the world what a fantastic aircraft they were, wonder where they all are now? I have been going to the wanaka warbirds airshow since 1994.

I'm afraid that Mark Hannah, the pilot of this aircraft, lost his life in an accident some years ago now. He was flying a Hispano Buchon which crashed on final approach in Spain if I remember correctly.

И-16 машина просто отличная не даром провоевала все 4 года войны и ещё послужила партой для первых выпусков послевоенных лётчиков...По мне так это последний НАСТОЯЩИЙ самолёт...дальше пошли соревнования в скорости ,а за тем и в насыщенностью всевозможной электроникой...а в И-16 только пилот и машина ...суровые но прекрасные времена были...

When the Kiwis first rebuilt these, I recall an article about first impressions. The undercarriage is mechanical, not hydraulic. I think they said it takes 31 turns of a crank, by hand to retract it! All this while still climbing in an aircraft that didn't have elevator trim! Lovely, lovely little plane (",)

With a nose only a mother could love, the wind resistance must have been incredible
the nose is lattice in front, the incoming air cools the radial engine and is discharged along the sides of the housing. But yes, the fuel consumption of such aircraft is still huge compared to the more aerodynamic new ones.

to my knowledge the I-16 actually had flapperons - the ailerons would act as flaps by lowering in position for landing etc, and to use the ailerons as ailerons, they would just move from the lowered position.

Нет, история забывается. Вон молодежь уже даже не знает что такое Хатынь. Что в Белоруссии каждый 4-й погиб в той войне, и какой ценой вообще эта победа досталась СССР. Так что звено Чаек было бы в самый раз.
генерал-майор Голодовников (воевавший на И-16) : Н.Г. И-16 был самолетом сложным, строгим в технике пилотирования... И-16 был очень маневренным, выполнял любой пилотаж. Я любил этот истребитель... Двигатели на И-16 стояли хорошие, очень надежные. Два-три цилиндра в бою повредят, и все равно домой придешь...Динамика разгона у И-16 была потрясающей, особенно с М-63. Это его второе уникальное качество после горизонтальной маневренности. (книга "Асы и пропаганда. Дутые Победы люфтваффе")

it depends whom you ask :) Rata is nickname that it got in Spain in 1936, it was called like that by the supporters of the FAI party. In Spain it got another nickname Mosca (fly), it was called like this by the supporters of CNT party
I-16's are so crazy looking . They have so many holes in the cowling for the exhaust stacks.

That was our pride then...pity that leter we relaxed and paid too much for that...just imagine - now we talking about one, just one plane take our gazes. In 1st day of WWII russians lost more then 1000 planes! Now you can restore a scale of those battles!

This is the first fighter plane designed specifically to defeat the enemy by deafening him. It was finally pulled from service by demand of deafened pilots.

One of the best fighters of early thirties. They even fought in WWII agents Me-109 with some success.
It looks a little archaic and there's the open cockpit. However, this was a great little fighter and held it's own during the war.

the I-16 was first flown in 1933, she was one of the first military low wing monoplane in aerial history.. much earlier than other military airplanes such as Hurricanes (1937), Bf109s (1937) or P-40s (1938).. even the mighty P-51s (1940) or A6Ms (1939)

It's not so. The procent of losses for I-16 during 1942 was less than for other types of soviet fighter planes. The I-16 is little and fantastically maneuverable. Try to hit it.
