The voice actor for D was my voice and speech teacher in college. Andrew Philpot. He was also Lord Boraska in final fantasy. He’s an incredible stage actor and chuckles about his experience working on anime because he would try to make it interesting vocally and the directors told him to literally not act at all. Just speak the lines straight.
Lucky😒
I love his work as D. I wish we got him to voice D in the dramatized audiobook of VHD
@@Z.O.1991 he could read a Chinese food menu and make you laugh or cry, whatever he wanted. He really is the best actor I’ve ever seen or worked with in person. And he worked his ass off. At 50 years old he’s running laps and doing vocal warmups for a Shakespeare show or whatever show. I worked maybe 6 shows with him and 2 years of teaching.
D is so powerful because he's the "lone hero archetype. The author of the novels didn't just take elements from horror and sci-fi, but also samurai films and spaghetti westerns. D is the epitome of the wandering ronin/gunslinger who is hired to protect against and defeat the evil warlord/ranch owner/bandits.
Vampire Hunter D is and absolute masterpiece from the golden age of anime. Enough said.
Vampire Hunter D is over 10,000 years and is a god hunter now, that can tell you how powerful he really is.
There are different levels of god. Are these god-god or self-proclaimed gods
@@camk8856 like eldritch level super power beings
@@gateofbabylon9177 like cthulhu dead at the bottom of the sea eldritch?
It’s D nothing can stand before his aloof beauty
He’s right D has been stated to be by his father to be his greatest creation, he has half brothers who are full vampire and he still is more powerful then them… he can rewrite his fate by tampering with the Akashik records which is jus nuts …. Him fighting gods ain’t outa his realm
I’ve been a huge fan ever since I saw the original Vampire Hunter D in the 90’s. I’ve read a few novels and followed info on the bloodlust movie for years waiting for its release. Great video but I wanted to add more info and clarify something.
Lefty’s species are referred to as the Countenanced Carbuncle and are described as sentient, symbiotic lifeforms. Mashira, the werewolf in Bloodlust, was actually one in the novels and manga. He was made a werewolf in the movie but this is the reason why he has the huge jaws in his abdomen.
Rei, or Rei-Ginsei, was neither Magnus Lee’s son nor was he a vampire. He was a mutant that could warp dimensional space. In the 1985 movie Magnus Lee at one time promised Rei that he would be made into a noble/vampire. However when Rei appeared to collect the reward after believing that he had killed D, Magnus refused. Laughing at the prospect that Rei could be a noble.. He then said in 50-60 years he might reconsider it.
In the novels and manga D demonstrates insane feats. He cuts a mountain range in half. He dodges/cuts lightning bolts and lasers. He also carries as weapons wooden stakes that are used more like bo-shuriken or throwing spikes. When he throws them they ignite with white hot fire from the air friction.
Ninja Scroll was the one that got me into Japanese anime…
@@danielangelvega9067 that’s another really good one!
I've read I think a total of 9 or was it 11 of the novels, really worth the read!! I wish their was newer novels and and a new movie since Blood Lust was so great. Blood lust was a bit more tame than it's source material the novel Demon Death Race the brothers were made out to be somewhat decent people but while in the book they were more or less grapests.
@@WhatWouldVillainsDo I know right!! I agree on all accounts. I wish there were more. Bloodlust was made because Mike McShane, the guy who was the English voice for left hand, basically begged the author to allow it to be made. He loved the books and the original movie. So oddly enough, English is how it was first recorded.
I liked the Marcus brothers in the movie a lot but in the book they turned my stomach. Especially since Leila was their actual blood sister
Didn’t know that about lefty … wow
From what I remember from looking up the wiki, D is much more powerful than many Dhampir because of MULTIPLE reasons.
1) His Father (Dracula) and his Mother (implied to be the original Mina Harker from the Bram Stoker story) were actually in love, and their relationship was consentual.
2) Dracula specifically experimented and tweeked his DNA to make him physically powerful enough to kill a Noble.
3) It is implied that Dracula specifically made D the failsafe for when the time of the Nobles was passed. It is outright said that the Ancestor was tired and disgusted by the Bloodlust of the Nobility, and is then implied specifically created D to kill Nobles who preyed on humans in a non-symbiotic way.
IIRC the novels actually also reveal that D is hunting his father who is still out there somewhere.
Like Alucard, he also doesn't like his dad very much.
Don't read wiki fandom
They overwank him to point of Saitama level
The novels get pretty good into the lore and history of not only him, but his mother and the nobility. Especially what his father was after in creating D.
Vampire hunter d is the very first anime I ever saw. They played it on tnt and I was blown away. Glad to see this getting some love!!!!!
Vampire Hunter D was the first bootleg anime on vhs I ever bought at a comic convention way back when. Still have it lol.
and that drip dude. the second movie had me hooked. and was delighted the day my dad brought home vampire hunter D on playstation.
that was a great time, we were already huge fans of resident evil, so it was like playing resident evil except your D. and your hand had quite a bit to say lmao
Vampire hunter D was the first anime I ever watched back in the mid 90s.
Holy crap, I didn't know the hand was that powerful! Hot damn
D never denied lineage to the sacred ancestor, he was silent.
Hideyuki Kikuchi also wrote Wicked City, Vampire Wars and Demon City Shinjuku( just to name a few). Over the years he has had Studio Madhouses Yohiaki Kawajiri direct, storyboard and supply character designs to his amazing works! Adding to the awesomeness of anime as well as an amazing collab!❤
Demon City was cool. I remember seeing late one summer night in the early 90's. It was on the sci-fi channel back when it was a fledgling channel.
A lot of people cite too toonami as introducing anime to the U.S. but Sci Fi was playing things like D, Iria, Spriggan, Armitage, ect that really was a golden age on TV
Bloodlust is so fucking cool, one of the few instances where the sequel is better than the original movie.
26y difference:), technology improved in this time:), but i agree, we even have a small easter egg
@@model84 what easter egg?!
@@ssppeeaarr remember the siblings from '84 film? and the old guy selling D new horse in 2000? i assume it's the same boy, he states that was rescued by D '100 years ago'
@@model84 ohh ya i thought it was dan from the older film when that scene came. it was neat. but then i heard ppl saying it cant be him cuz this is like 1000 years later or something idk...?? also i dont remember count lee taking in another kids as hostage. so that story seems kinda not fitting in right with what we saw in the old movie.
but i know in the books D does come across another town where some doctor or something talks about them for a breif moment. how he almost married doris but she was still in love with a vampire hunter she met awhile ago. but i forget the details. i read the comic adaptions a few months ago. loved it. idk the timeline of the books either. love vhd tho.
@@model84 yes, it had better technology at it's disposal, but even the art direction and writing was better. I usually prefer animes from the 80s to the ons from the 2000s, but not in this case.
I love D. I saw the original movie when I was 12 and he was instantly my favorite hero of all time.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is one of my all time favourite film…. A masterpiece
I started reading the books when I found like 15 of them (in order) in a used bookstore and thus I also found the Bloodlust movie, turns out my dad had seen the 1985 movie because he recognized it when I was watching it myself since I found it somewhere (Forgot where).
Vampire Hunter D is literally an integral part of my teen years and I still love him to this day, several years later.
I've read about 11 of the books I just need to make more time to finish the others but they are all damn GOOD! I'm 43 now and saw the first movie a very long time ago that and the OG Fist of the North Star.
Still my absolute favorite anime since I saw it in the late 80's, even the sequel turned out incredible and was a great follow up to the original. The novels are pretty awesome as well, I haven't read them all but have several of the first ones. I wish they would do more movies as some of the novels would make for an amazing anime in my opinion. Awesome video, anything Vampire Hunter D I am totally onboard for and can not get enough of! I heard what seems like ages ago there was talks of an anime series but I believe that just turned into the manga if I am remembering correctly. Oh and D made an appearance in Sailor Moon lmao.
I loved the books and movies. As a protagonist he is way overpowered which you would think would get boring. But like in One Punch Man, it's not so much about D or the fights. D is like a force of nature helping progress the stories and journeys of the side characters, helping them grow. Like D is the narrator and we as readers experience things through all the other characters and even through the villains.
Some say he is universal
But that just fans overwank him
Vampire hunter d is one of the most underrated franchises of all times a true godfather of a franchise hope they bring it back
The Dampyr is one of my favorite reads...ever, please more D videos.
He's probably my favorite anime character. His too dope. Dope doesn't even describe him.
This vampire hunter/vampire is a anime legend.
It's actually a great premise and the story is well done. Sad that it only had two movies. This could really become a franchise, if someone who knew what they were doing handled it.
i'm in deep grief that we have only 2 films:(, but god how good they are. Especially that there are 20+ novels to adapt and the last one was over 20years ago
It's a masterpiece. There are 35 books in the series I know of. Worth the read.
There’s 41 in Japan, they take a while to get translated though. The series is still ongoing as far as I know.
If you read the novels, by pale fallen angel you realize 2 things, one he is not half human half vampire, more like 10human/90 vampire, two his hand is a siamese brother, where D is 100% physical and his chimera brother 100% magical.... the ancient ancestor is still an enigma to me....
There's a few other Dhampires who actually came from normal carnal relations but from what I get D is purely a product of genetic modification of Dracula's own DNA and then fertilizing a women with it. Granny Viper was such a great charecter and Pilgram shows a bit more about other Dhampires in the world.
I remember the first time seeing i was 6 it was year 2000. Too me at that time it was and still is my favorite vimp anime.
WoW! I remembered this . I really thought there was a 3rd movie . As a kid I enjoyed the anime movies . I would like to see a continuation to this . . .
The 2000 movie was gorgeous
One of my fav's. I've watched this several times already and will be watching it several more times in the future without a doubt. Good stuff.
Husbando, idol, hero, legend...
Hell yeah, Vampire Hunter D.
One tiny thing. To my knowledge and I only say this because I haven't read all of Kikuchi's work and he has admitted to contradicting himself sometimes so maybe this is one of those things. However in the novels I read its never really stated Vampires started the nuclear war. Yes they were preparing for it but whenever it comes up characters call it an inevitability "that humanity destroys itself" as cruel and evil as some of the more villainous nobles are not one of them really claims to have a hand in the destruction of human civilization even though they are old enough, demented enough to do so and egomaniacle enough to bring it up at the drop of a hat. Vampires in VHD have had their civilization before the human species even got started according to Gilzen and started declining long before they took over the world. Given how the nobility is portrayed and how their oniscient god works they probably knew about the nuclear war centuries before it happened but did nothing to stop it. Then 1,000 years later they just took over.
ok so its almost been 25 years since the last one, we are due for the third movie then?
rei isn't Count Magnus Lee's son.
The 1985 movie is what got me heavily into anime
Their should be a crossover with Vampire Hunter D and Blade. That would be awesome.
I wish they would have made more vampire hunter d movies
I fell like D is an invention of Dracula, as much as his ancestor. Everything about him seems counter to the abilities and magic of Elder vampires and other creatures, even down to his blood being both empowering to himself AND poison to others. Dracula's perfect son.
You aren't far off. Later novels show D basically cleaning up all of the sacred ancestors failures and constantly being tested for something. We know from the books he is meant to avert some great catastrophe even the Sacred Ancestor fears and all who are privy to it go mad and try everything in their power to stop it. However he doesn't seem intended to be a vampire hunter by the Sacred Ancestor's own words in volume 2. Basically the Sacred Ancestor expresses disappointment in him that he's wasting his time killing vampires and that he should "just give us time to die off on our own quietly."
@@Usernamesdontmatter1 awesome, thank you for sharing, its one of my favorote worlds but I know little about it, Ill have to check the books out.
@@Divadtubethe books are pretty neat but they have been going for like 40 years now with a lot of spin offs and short stories on top of that. So sometimes there's contradictory information and plotlines set up early on that go nowhere because either they are red herrings or kikuchi just plain forgot. One example of later books contradicting older books is that in volume 2 D outright states that no noble has ever been recorded to walk in sunlight. That the vampires present in the book are new and totally unheard of before. However fast forward like 30 years for a spin off and we have the awesome Noble Lord Greylancer the ultra badass that makes other nobles look like cubs compared to a great lion, walking about in daylight surprising his enemies and allies alike thanks to the ring he carries. This isn't even a case of unreliable narrator as if D didn't know about Greylancer when in "the nightmare village" where they actually meet both of them are aware of each other's exploits and have a deep respect for each other.
It stuff like this that keeps the timeline and lore straight a lot. I don't really blame kikuchi though since I wouldn't remember stuff I wrote 40 years ago really well either.
@@Usernamesdontmatter1This doesn't happen with Oda from One Piece
still awaiting a long overdue animated tv series......Netflix is going to do it
D is AWESOME!!! I would like to see a match between him and Alucard (Hellsing) on Death Battle! 😁👍
He is very strong, but Hellsing's Alucard is ridiculously overpowered. I'd rather see him fighting Castlevania's Alucard, it would be way more fair.
@@satansjihad6353 It's not actually as D would win. the Movies cover volumes 1-3 of the books but as the series went on D's power level became bonkers; fighting eldritch gods, tanking laser attacks that destroyed a civilization, and cutting pure black holes as well as formless entities with his sword.
ya D stomps alucard. his feats get crazy OP. he can warp reality and is immortal. he can regen in seconds
from being reduced to a pool of blood. but alucard isnt a pushover so i say they fought for like thousand years or something...
then D would eventually win. would takes alucards soul via left hand swallowing. or just swallow him while alive and send him
off to some pocket dimension. lol.
needs to be a death battle D vs alucard. idk if they made one yet.
@@satansjihad6353Nah D in the books literally has "No u" levels of BS powers. He's killed things similar and even more mind bending incomprehensible as Alucard with Shrodinger powers. He can also rewrite reality and also copy any ability he sees regardless of how stupid or over the top it is. Dude was flung to the other side of the universe by his halfbrother and D popped back within a few seconds and attacked him. He's been eaten, disintegrated, frozen to absolute zero, eaten by 5 different vampires at the same time, beheaded, covered in magma, drowned, withstood psychic attacks that make cities go insane, crashed as several times light speed and still comes back.
Great video!
love D ,when I saw the cover at a local Video store in Highschool in the mid 90s and fell in love.
2000s Bloodlust is about redemption, since each character transcends their old ways.
Absolutely outstanding video many thanks
Vampire Hunter D got me into anime
you got a couple things wrong in this video like lee does not have a son and D is way older than 5000 but the video is overall good
Really under rated series. Wish they made more movies
I've always liked Vampire Hunter D. Even the 80's animated movie remains timeless. It's also kinda cool to see how other anime shows borrowed ideas from this. Solid video, thank you!
What things have current anime borrowed?
One of my fav! So good
Was hoping this video would more cover the light novels but it's only scratched the surface. |
Initially we think the earth was ruined in nuclear war 10,000 years ago and then the vampire nobles took over but are now dwindling out. However, the novels reveal it turns out vampires had rebuilt society and there was a semi golden each only to for their technology attracted AY LMAO ALIENS who wanted to conquer the earth. So for the past 5000 years Dracula and the other super powered nobles have been fighting off the alien invaders in space. Ok so with all that out of the way, the more the books went on the more powerful D's feats became including things like tanking a laser beam attack that was fired at him from mars, fighting elder god space monsters, and doing things like cutting black holes or beings with no physical form with his sword.
Thanks, i always wondered why they showed ruins in space in the Animated movies.
I still want to see the battle of Pluto animated. The noble ships being blasted by the OSB and the scientific OSB confused that the nobles didn't die when they were put in the vacuum of space.
first saw this in 88 and still love it. showed my son-in-law this and fist of the north star, he likes them for the classics they are but still prefers newer stuff heh 😉
Same here, I make my 9yo son watch FOTNS like once a month😂...
can u pls make a video about the sacred ancestor? a video about d's twin would be cool too,, ps love ur vids!! keep on :)
I really love this series I wish they would make more movies
Good video here's a sub and like 🎉
Later down the road it was revealed D was the direct son of Dracula
We need a new Vampire Hunter D anime.
Need to make it into another series or 2 part film.. Cmon now, this guy is the GOAT
Thank you Marvelous Anime that was a D-lightful explanation 😁
As a kid I'd always check the T.V. Guide for when TBS played Vampire D & Heavy Metal back to back.
Been a while, but I don't recall Rei being Magnus's son in the book. The movie may be affecting the memory, but I believe he only had a daughter as offspring in that book.
lol he aint. this guy a fake fan. rei is a mutant who can bend time. he wants to be a vamp tho. like he says in the movie.
count lee only had one child we know of that was lamika....
they should make more vampire hunter D animes. its cool series. if hellsing got one idk why VHD cant?? 😟😔
In no version of the story is Rei the Count's son. He wouldn't be able to use the candle against D and Lee if he was even half noble.
The guy's information is bit wrong. Rei was mutant.
Would love to see this comeback.
As long as I know, the half-vampire protagonist is a bastard who was birth between a vampire King & a human woman. Even though he isn't a pure vampire, has the potential power to overwhelm other vampires who love killing humans. And according to the related theory, half vampires are natural-born vampire eliminators. So the protagonist could become the strongest vampire hunter. If the OTT platform Netflix produce another animation based on this awesome movie except for the Castlevania series, old fans of the movie would watch the movie absolutely.
A Vampire's worst nightmare.
What are the names of the books with the anatomy pictures you use on the thumbnails of your videos.
Im on book 12. Graphic audio so far has produced 12 books and they're fantastic. I was exposed to Bloodlust back in 02 i think it was. I love the setting and characters.
Did you just flash Trinity Blood across the screen when this is a video about D and his world?
P.S. Lee has no son! Only a singly daughter.
I’d love a new vampire hunter D film or series! There’s plenty of books to draw from. I’ve read a lot of them, but not all.
Can you do a video about zeiram
Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing Ultimate are up in my favorite horror animes I haven't been able to find a store that the Mangas aren't sold out but if the animes are anywhere near reliable to source materials I would say they would make excellent reading
He is no simp☝️
I'm just going to say it Vampire hunter D like just took a lot inspiration from Solomon kane.
Enjoyed it, But.. You didnt leave any breathing-room and needed to slow down the talking just a bit. It matters just as much as orating in detail.
Bloodlust anime was way ahead of its time. Also in the Manga, Marcus brothers are fucked up. You can imagine what they do with with their sister Leila…
2:03 why the Trinity Blood imagery here?
Why is his RIGHT hand in the thunbnail when you’re talking about his LEFT hand?
Trying to avoid copyright I guess
Marvelous anime using clickbait thumbnails.... that would never happen. Get out of here
Please bring this amazing anime back there is so much to show us the fund. Can't wait to see more soon 🙏🙏🙏🙏😁😁😄☺️🎉❤️😊
A half vampire half human is called a damphir (Dam or Dom fear).
i wish i could find more of it to read, one of the most fascinating characters for me .
I really need to read the manga & the novels too
One of the greatest movies ever.
Do you have a Seras Victoria Origins video?
I can't believe we only have two movie adaptions and no series. Travesty.
Rewatching Bloodlust, I see castles in space that look like the Doomslayer's base in Doom Eternal. I wonder if that was inspiration for the game.
Your title is misleading.simple answer.......Yes.
Demon Death Chase is awesome, but those brothers are messed up.
3:01 ALUCARD WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!?!
It will take decades for jp ln novels from the 80s to be fully out in america
Also, along with all of the other critiques in the comment section, D is a Dunpeal, NOT a dampir!!! Please, in the future, do proper research.
Dunpeal is only used in the translation of the bloodlust movie and the manga for volume 3 (which has the worst translation of the manga adaptations for other reasons than that.)
D and other half vampires in the entire book series have been called Dhampirs. Source: I own a vast number of them.
Volume 6 "Pilgrimage of the Sacred and Profane" page 167: "The hatred you have for dhampirs. Only a dhampir feels that strongly" D to Granny Viper.
Out of all the things the guy gets wrong calling D a dhampir is actually correct.
In your thumbnail it's his right hand, so....... flipping those images is clever, but has drawbacks when orientation is an issue.
D's left hand is a Countenanced Carbuncle.
My anime husband Vampire Hunter D 💖💎💎🔥🔥
Amazingly, the second anime is better than the first
Uhhhh... no... but it's still really REALLY good
Yes
I have the dvds and books, love this anime, wish they would adapt the rest of the books also into anime or maybe a movie but I wonder who would make a great actor to play D.
vampire hunter D is a great character. plagued with existentialism about his own people and their place in the universe.
very interesting character
@4:37 D is actually supposed to be beautiful like a woman. hes supposed to be beyond handsome, hes acquired qualities of androgynous beauty leaning more towards female.
but his fighting abilities are ALL MAN BABY!
