Back in 1970 I lived opposite him in Camden Town. Alan Bennett and Johnathan Miller lived a few doors away. I had no idea who these people were but later learned that I’d been part of the Lady in the Van episodes. I met George much later at one of his gigs and told him about this I we drunk double brandies together. Wonderful man and one of my heroes.
As a maker of documentaries myself I have to give the highest praise to Katie Buchanan and her team for bringing so much love and insight into "George Melly's Last Stand". Like the best non-fiction films, the camera disappears and the subjects emerge in the full flower of who they are. I did not know about George Melly before I saw this film. Now I feel I do. Lorenzo DeStefano...
my later father die of cancer he was strong right to the end like George you always have place in my heart still miss you and never forgoten God bless Mr George Melly xxx old devil
Many many years ago, the late 1970's in fact, I literally bumped into George en route to the lavatory at the Midland Hotel Birmingham. I had just got engaged but it didn't stop him chatting me up. He looked so dapper and was so charming. Very sadly, not so many characters left in the world.
What a charismatic and entertaining man, love the relationship with Diana. Old Rockin Chair is great! - So sorry I never got to see my namesake live. Brigida Melly - jazz singer too
"It's an option if I want to do it." Fuck me. I wish had a tenth of that get-out-of-my-way-I'm-doing-this-shit-whatever-you-think attitude at half his age.
Larger than life , aren't our "entertainers" so boring and anodyne these days, this man was unique, a pre punk and post punk maverick..." I didn't like christmas anyway".. genius.
I met George Melly twice when he was well. What a force of nature he was - and what a delightful man! RIP
A class act and a hepcat right to the last. The world needs more people like Mr. Melly!
Yep , hep cat is the right summary ❤

I remeber George as my brother-in-law. He performed a caberet in our little thatched cottage in Childrey, near Wantage. Wonderful skill. Naughty man.
He used to stay at my dads hotel in Lichfield, I would serve them brandy most of the night as they sang, laughed and talked.....such happy memories.

What a guy
He told one of the dirtiest jokes on stage I've ever heard. Wish I could remember it.
