      More expensive is not necessarily better, and sometimes more expensive pens are so because of more than just ornamental features. There are lots of fountain pen channels out there that should help you get ideas for other fountain pens you might enjoy.

      Barnes and noble has a studio calligraphy set with three pens and 4 nibs. And cartridges.

    You can get a Cross cartridge converter so you can choose different coloured inks. Also the experience to you have will depend on the quality of the paper. For fountain pens I use paper that is 58 gms or higher resulting in smoother writing feel and less bleed through. Papers like Atoma, Tomeo River, Rhodia or Clairefontain are really nice. Welcome to the family.

    Just bought this same pen today. Was on sale for $24 CDN. My first I have bought myself, I have one other that was a gift from years ago. As a matter-o-fact they don't even make the cartridge refills anymore. I still wanna buy a better one. But that will come. My Sheaffer is fine or extra fine. This one is Medium, I think I lke the fine tip better. IMO this flows a lot of ink.

    Hey Greg, welcome to the family. Fountain pening has become a great passion for me since around 2010. But I only own about 120. And to be honest Cross, depending on the model, is usually an excellent writing experience. You may want to consider for a real low cost bargain on eBay Jinhao 992, X450, &, X750, Penbbs, Moonman Wancai or Moonman M3. Shesffers are awesome, especially the No Nonsense models; they're on eBay and Amazon & mostly sold out of India. There's also Parker's, Lamy, & Platinum Preppys, & my favorite from Platinum, The Plasir. Very affordable, always wet, and reliable. Also, not a criticism, but you may want to change the way you grip your fountain pen at it's section: try holding the pen between your thumb & forefinger, while letting it rest on your middle finger, relax your grip a little, and use as little/light pressure as possible. You just want to lay ink on the paper, not through it. LOL. Better paper makes a big difference. An economical choice is Black n' Red Notebook 8" x 11" Double Spiral, on eBay for $7.99. I also use Rhodia, Clarefontaine, & of course Tomoe River. Any way, keep up the good work, & just enjoy yourself with it. Best regards, & God bless.

      Hey I love the advice, thank you! Some of the pens you have mentioned, I have ordered and will be taking about. But you have intrigued me about the paper to use. I certainly will look into that. Thanks again 🙂👍🏾

      Anytime. Would you be interested in adopting a few of mine. I mean, I have more than enough, LOL, & getting new ones just about every month. Since it takes so long to buy stuff from China, I could send a cache of mine to you, just to give your channel a boost, and an encouragement to you. Just let me know. Best regards.

      I need an email address, because I'm removing mine from the public view. I do not have a WasteBook account, nor do I tweet. If you would like the free stuff, 4 pens & a mostly unused Rhodia 8 x 11 flip pad, that I want to send to you, you'll have to respond to my comment with some sort of contact information. Thanks & God bless.

    As someone has commented, most of that ink is in the feed, although it seems to be a “wet writer,” which will go through ink quickly. For the comfort of your thumb, you may want to try a Lamy Safari, it has a triangular grip that is very comfortable. I find myself writing with it much more often than several much more expensive pens.

  • @TheHardcoreDilettante
    @TheHardcoreDilettante 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason why the refill seems to be used up quickly is because the feed of the pen holds quite a bit of ink, so a lot of that missing ink has flowed down into the feed. It hasn't necessarily been used up on the page. If you get more into fountain pens, you'll find yourself frustrated that it takes so long to use up ink, since you'll want to switch up your inks a lot for fun.

    You hold pens funny :p
    I just got this same pen. Its not bad at all. Specially now that they are on sale everywhere it seems.
    Why does it hurt your thumb? Its too big? Or your used ro rubber or something? I find the shape of it very comfy actually. (Most pens have a grip section thats way too short....)

    • @gregandpens1334
      @gregandpens1334  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It hurts my thumb cause I’m so used to rubber cushion at the shaft of the pens I use. I believe this will be a growing pain for fountain pens

    Try a vintage esterbrook J model maby :P they are from the 1950's hehe
    Just make sure its in working condition. And you need a bottle of ink lol
    Its a step up in price from your calais... Not a huge step But the calais is so good that you dont really need any side-grades. Unless you dont like its feel personaly.

      My dad got a "franklin covey" fountain pen at the same time i got my Calais. Its the same price.
      If you hold the pen near the tip maby you would like that one more. But he loves it. it seems to be a decent pen for the money too.

      Also the "muji aluminum" is a really cheap fountain pen that wouldent wreck your wallet to try it.
      Im thinking since its a straight shaft you could even put a rubber on it hah!
      Something to consider :) lots of options out there...
      Or maby your thumb will just get tougher :P cuz i find the calias comfy.
