Todmorden curve took 10 years and £9m to build, which is quite impressive considering it's less than 500 meters long and runs on an existing formation!

Burnley Manchester Road was opened built by BR in the early 80s when BR reintroduced the service between Preston and Bradford - due to the Provincial Building Society (NatProv) relocating from Preston to Bradford. As you've seen the station on one side has recently benefited from gain a new waiting room and ticket office - replacing an earlier, simpler version

For anyone who didn't already know, the 2 boys from the Accrington Stanley commercial got hired recently to do another commercial (30 years on from the original) to do the exact same commercial but instead of milk, it's a vodka distilled from milk. It's worth checking out.

What if after all the stations have been visited, you get all of us viewers to do a tour of our local station for the channel, so that you can have an in depth library of all the individual stations stored on record. A short but concise video of shareable quality.

Talking about the Accrington Stanley advert, when at the York Railway Museum with my kids a few weeks ago, I met a bloke and his son. They were Accrington Stanley fans, but the bloke's brother had been the producer of that advert, and apparently the football club were delighted by it as they got payment for featuring on the advert.

The other thing that Accrington is famous for is that it was where Jon Anderson, the original singer of prog-rock band Yes, was born, and he started his career there, which explains the Lancashire accent. And Besses'o the barn would have taken some beating for a station name, but it's now part of Manchester's Metrolink (and was one of the first stations on the Bury line)

I recall a couple of years ago, in Perth Western Australia, during a cricket test match between Australia and England, that during a drinks break that the commentary team started admiring the lovely images being screened on the TV at the time, including the surrounding Swan River and picturesque skyline and surrounding beautiful images of the city. John Lloyd (English commentator) broke the silence by saying '"it reminds me of Accrington...". I still laugh when I think of it.

When you did Hebden Bridge I would’ve thought it much easier (and quicker) to have simply got a bus for the last bit rather than wait ages for a taxi Northern clearly couldn’t be bothered with. Hebden Bridge now has lifts on each side.

9m24s Burnley/Manchester Road. Thank you for spending so much time on the platform. I traveled by bus past that station twice each school day for four years 1952-56. Sunnybank School looked a lot like the building behind Vicky. Two years in a row Mum & Dad, Lia and I traveled by bus from Goodshaw to Burnley/Manchester Road and caught the train to/from Billy Butlin's camp at Filey. Filey! Now I can boast that I have been to a station that you've NOT been to! Cheers, Chris

"Hall - ith - wood". Pronounced as it is written really. Just Lancashire dialect for "Hall in the woods". -The hall was the home of inventor, Samuel Compton, who designed the Spinning Jenny, which lead to the industrialisation of cotton production and weaving in the North West. It is now a museum.

    • @hercmike

Few facts for you (since I'm from Bolton):
Hall i'th Wood is pronounced hall ith wood.
It was once double track all the way up to Blackburn - there used to be a station in between Hall i'th Wood and Bromley Cross (which you missed) called The Oaks (you can still see the Southbound platform in the undergrowth which used to be quad tracks, the same at Entwistle.
In between Bromley Cross there used to be a station called Turton and Edgworth which was also double tracked and famous as a previous Monarch (I forget which one) once stopped in the local village and stayed the night because the royal train got stuck.
Their also used to be a station in between Entwistle and Darwen called Spring Vale and one inbetween Darwen and Blackburn called Goose House.
Entwistle incidentally only still exists because it was privately owned so survived the cuts.

I'm a Pompey supporter from the USA; Portsmouth played Accrington Stanley twice last season in League Two, and once in the FA Cup. Pompey split the season series with them 0-1 away and 2-0 at Fratton Park, and the Blues won the FA Cup 2nd round fixture by 1-0. Does this count as having an association with Accrington Stanley? I would imagine most yanks would not have known that. Cheers!

Accrington, apart from the Accrington Stanley F.C. that currently play in "League Two", and Accrington Stanley F.C. , which went bust in 1966 was also home of Accrington F.C, one of the 12 clubs that founded the Football League in 1888 - which resigned from the League in 1892 and went bust in 1896.

Re Chorley and similar names for stations, I can recall two incidences in seperate jobs where visitors to our office both went to the wrong station, Hayes (Kent) rather than Hayes & Harlington on the other side of London. Whoops. Much hilarity ensued when the penny dropped! :D They were not meeting me fortunately, as I would have corrected them. ;)
