- It's time to tick off some more 'Stick your hand out stations' - request stops! We do three in this video along the East Lancashire line in the form of Pleasington, Burnley Barrack and Hapworth. We also see Huncoat which used to be a request stop but no more. Oh, and i have a surprise/exception guest with me today in the form of my "Northern Correspondent"
You can download my Request Stops Map, here: geofftech.co.u...
Note - This journey was made safely last month when none of these stations were affected by local lockdown measures, more here: geofftech.co.u...
I love the fact you were expecting either "Northerns new toy" or a pacer, and you got a 158 Sprinter!
A 158 Spritzer? There's a service you don't see every day. I've cycled the Leeds and Liverpool in parts - some mad (i.e. fit) people do the 170-odd mile canal in one day. And good to see Karl!
Geoff I live near pleasington
That is only proof to one fact: "The Northern Random Unit Generator" has survived another operator change.
Pacers are gone
And the clone line isn’t electrified
Pleasington's Wife is Thankington
Or maybe Pleasington's husband is Thankington. Or maybe Pleasington's partner is Thankington. Will we ever know?

After a not very good day for me it was great to watch Geoff and Karl. Cheers chaps.
Geoff endlessly amused by someone being Northern.
No! He has a sense of humour. He's laughing with him, not at him.
@@rosiefay7283 Yea, i'm sure he knows that, I think it's you without a sense of humour
Very fun Video Geoff.
Best bit was Karl's slightly upset expression even behind the mask when Geoff told him he wasn't invited to the other request stop in the area.
I'm excited for more reports of 'Interesting Things' from our Northern Corrospondent, KARL F. xD
*Groans at Pleasington gags*
Class 195s are used on the York/Leeds to Blackpool services. East Lancashire route services are any 15x unit. A lot of Lancashire stations retain, to this day, NNW branding if you know where to look. Huncoat if I remember right was removed as a request stop in that May 2018 timetable recast. And when filming was taken place, the majority of Northern's request stops were put as normal stops - however, as of today, we are back to request stops.
All Northern's timetable posters have been removed from stations during the current C-19 pandemic - will be reinstated from December.
Karl's a natural Geoff !! Handy to have someone who can pronounce the local station names; can't rely on the announcements.😁
This is one of my local lines; the 195s run the express through to York while the Sprinters typically run the Colnes. Interestingly if you're coming from Yorkshire way and want to go to Colne but can't cross Burnley you have to double back at Accrington as the expresses don't stop at Rose Grove where the line splits
Had honour of using a request stop on the railway on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, before the line was closed. The driver tooted when he saw us. Special feeling.
What a funny video! Thanks
I've done that line, Blackburn to Colne (plus Nelson station too), one saturday a few years ago when they ran a 150/1 coupled to a 142. But I haven't done the stops between, including these three.
However, I have now visited all 60 stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro, my fourth and fifth complete route (yellow and green lines) after the Stourbridge shuttle a couple of years ago, Birmingham New St to Rugeley Trent Valley and Birmingham New St to Leicester earlier this year.
Next are the 3 stops between Alnmouth and Morpeth, to complete Northern's Chathill service and also all stops on the ECML between Chathill and Doncaster. Plus, when the covid restrictions are eased, I'll go stay with friends in Bradford to finish the Airedale and Wharfedale lines (3 stops left), and try to do more of west yorkshire.
Up in my neck of the woods! Good to see you Geoff! 👍
Petition for National Rail to rename all request stops to Stick Your Hand Out stations
I have not watched the whole video yet, but i know its going to be amazing! 🙂
If Geoff ever does Entwistle station, he should wear a 'The Who' t shirt.
th-cam.com/video/w21XMBsEeYw/w-d-xo.html Here you are
Great to see you again, Karl!
Look at geoff. Uploads are back. Carl is back. In a different world. Let's go and to some stations.
Carl*
I love seeing my local line and even hearing my station name in passing but also it made me realise how I haven’t even been on a train since March. This year is weird, but it’s nice to see it again.
Great comedy duo! Love the news link too. Great to see some train action. x
Being from Burnley, I can tell you that the Colne service uses a selection of 150's, 156's, and 158's and used to be solely operated by 142's. To be honest I didn't know that they used 158's until this video.
it probably because 142 was retired and not enough of 150-156 trains why they get ther class 195/331 ( Northern new toys) in service
I love your tube videos. As a fellow Northerner who used to live in Hapton, it's great to see you come up here and do a video about the East Lancashire line. Would love to explore the tube and network with you. Would be a fact a minute I would imagine. 👍😊
thanks Alec, very kind! could give you a hundred facts i suspect ... yes!
When you get to/do Entwistle for the last of the main Lancashire ones, you should know that its actually built next to an old station thats completely demolished and no longer exists If you look on google maps you'll see the old platform outline, and the road by it is called Station Approach cos of the old one used to be there :3 And theres another one just down the line as well. All that remains of that one is the old station master's house and the level crossing just behind where the station used to be.
I spy wearing an old Network Northwest logo on that Lostock Hall sign!
It's so pleasing to now be seeing new content! Wonderful!
It's pleasing to see a *ton* of new content 😉
Exit stage left.....pursuing a beer!
There, ladies & gentlemen is the worst pun of all time!
Just as well you didn't tell us you'd be at Pleas(e)ington, or people would've tried to meet you, creating a Fan Queue.
😢 Oh Dear. You worked hard for that one; was it worth it? 😁
If they all asked for autographs, you'd be able to hear the pleas of the fan queue.
Then Geoff would need to Thank the fan queue very much. Boom f Boom !!
I know; I'll get my coat.
and goodbye from him Mr Geoff Marshal, social history correspondent, all the stations, all canals and all the pubs, thank you for another educational vlog
Phwoar! I love a bit of hangover Network NorthWest branding.
So are you doing entwhistle, I use to live in Blackburn and accidentally got off there one night after falling asleep- station is in middle of nowhere, costly taxi ride home 😂
Entwistle is coming, yes!
Notice when Geoff says 'is that a Class 37?" there's a sign saying 'Class 142' - Pacer
@Geoff Your description says Hapworth, not 'apton.
I've used to get this trainline for years, it's been on and off requests stops, but I've never had to request them as they always stop anyway. When you've got a headache or you've been on your feet all day, and you just need a nice sit-down, that's when you get a pacer.
I grew up on the Padiham line before it became an official greenway. It was a single line raised up using waste from the coal mine that was at one end and covered in a deep layer of ballast. It was still in good nick long after it was abandoned due to everyone using it as a footpath. It was fantastic as a kid, I walked the length of multiple times and grew up playing on it.
So glad you did this video. Being from East Lancs myself finally great to see.
This is such an amazing video Geoff. Keep up your your great work!👍
Those Pleasington signs could do with a black outline on the text to aid readability.
Yep, very cute but not easy to read.
i live at the end of that line at Colne, the line use to go to skipton and into Yorkshire, but beaching cut that link, there is a campaign to re open it.
Did he say 'it's a sticky out hand job' ?
Very entertaining video neither the less. Top job.
I know there are no timetables or dot matrix displays but I guess the fancy new ticket machines can be used for train information.
I fully expected this to start with a AIRHORN BLAST! It's ya boi, GEOFF!
Hi recently got into your videos especially when you did one of Darnell station in Sheffield as one of the least used railway stations what you think about Sheffield midland station just love it when you get people to measure station platforms and other things that you don’t usually see passengers do l usually watch model railway videos and train videos but since seeing your channel it’s amazing
Kev from Sheffield
Had to stop a train at Pleasington a few years ago - a blizzard was blowing up the line along with the pacer!
Was at Entwistle last Friday, only one off and only one on!
Last week I travelled from Flimby (request stop) to Braystones (request stop) and had to yell at the guard across all the tape put up by Northern to protect their guards from passengers! I also noticed that neither Nethertown nor Braystones had ticket machines, so you could spend all day travelling back and forth between the two free of charge, as the guards aren't selling tickets at the moment! The one on my train had no ticket machine.
Trains are back to some kind of normal now thankfully. Geoff, If you ever need a Blackpool and the Fylde correspondent should ask Nodrog who also has a great channel on TH-cam
Great work understanding the language barrier Geoff. Take a "local correspondent" ie translator with you. Nice that you started at Lostock Hall but slapped wrists for not featuring it's history - last BR steam shed etc. I used to live about 100 yds from there and was a spotter's paradise.
I grew up in Lostock Hall in the late 60's/early 70's. Lostock Hall shed holds happy memories of my youth. I recently had a wander around the old site and managed to find 5 pieces of old coal. They're now placed on my mantelpiece. It must be 50 years old (Well probably a few million really!)
Great fun guys - thank you
5:12 the class 195/331 are used for North Blackpool-York whereas the 158/150 are used for Blackpool/Preston/Manchester to Carlisle/Colne/Clitheroe/Bradford i think
The canal between Manchester and Rochdale is called the Rochdale Canal. It goes as far as Sowerby Bridge. From there you can get to Leeds but only by using a couple of other navigations.
I guess there are no timetable boards at Burnley Barracks but there are currently no time tables at any Northern station. During lockdown the timetable was being revised on a week by week basis and so printed timetables could not be kept up to date. With the new time table now being introduced I’d expect to see printed timetables making a come back in the next few weeks.
This definitely brightened my day and it could certainly stand some brightening.
The Class 195's are used on Blackpool North-York trains, whereas the Colne-Preston stoppers (the diagrams of which see them head onto Blackpool South or Ormskirk) are either Class 150s, 156s or 158s.
Like a lot of folks who depend on the line for commuting in and out of preston i've surmised the timetabling has become more eliable now its just colne to preston
I live a stones throw away from this line and the sprinters are on the east lancashire line
The northern new trains are on the Leeds to Blackpool north line which only stops at burnley, Accrington, Blackburn, Preston
The pacers are on the Stalybridge line
The pacers don’t really run to stalybridge, only early in the morning and late at night. You can find them on the following services:
Manchester Victoria - Kirkby
Manchester Piccadilly - Chester
Manchester Piccadilly- New Mills Central
7:47 Ah, I see you've adopted the zigzag strategy to doing multiple stations. I'm impressed.
I remember travelling regularly on this line to Colne before any of the stops were request stops. Seemed to take forever to get to Colne from Preston.
it still does lol
An observation some stations don't have matrix screens because within the shelters there are portrait information screens showing approaching services (an example is in the shelter at Hapton) this may have been turned off though due to Covid and for energy saving by Northern.
When’s our Northern correspondent getting his own segment? Alreet lad 😁
Reason why double at Burnley Geoff is that was the main Blackpool Preston Colne Skipton Bradford Leeds line until 1970s when they diverted via copy pit
8:06 "Apparently there was no need, because he says we are stopping at all the stations anyway today"
Doesn't that mean that they are not request stops if they are stopping anyway, so you have to go back some time when they ARE 'Sticky Hand Out Jobs'.
Incidentally the branch line from Glannow Junction to Colne, which passes through Burnley Barracks, was single tracked in 1971.
David Collins, New Zealand Correspondent, for the Geoff Marshall Channel.
I would say the Overground is a bit more busy this week now! But it's true for the most part a lot of people are trying to stay evenly spread.
If you want to see Pacers come to Keighley in Yorkshire where theres several parked up on the Worth Valley line
You are on a winner with Karl
Amazing Video! Geoff you just made my day :)
I know im watching it and commenting
The Surrey Transport Hub me too
Haha
Used to live near pleasington and used to get off at Cherry Tree/Mill Hill Station
Love the news twist!
I’ve been too busy to go to pleasington and I don’t know what time 🕰️ trains in Burnley arrive in Burnley
The 143s are still out in force in Devon. Most trains on the exmouth to paignton route are a 150 plus 143 at the moment if you need a final pacer fix!
They are also out in South Wales and the north west.
Great video. Enjoyed it!
That ticket machine will never pay for itself! :D
Welldone guys keep up the good work stay safe 🙏
I am from Longridge but you walked from pleasington to Huncoat? That’s a crazy long walk :p
Hi Geoff could you do some stops down here on the South East Coast? Dumpton Park is a small station in between Ramsgate and Broadstairs, quite creepy at night too. I'd love to know what knowledge you have of my local stations.
Blackburn, on this line, has barriers so the ticket machines have been placed on (I think) all stations on the line to prevent anyone trying to get away without paying. Northern is quite strict when it comes to that these days.
Is the next Request stop gonna be Entwistle?
Very pleased with this one.
I used to live in Pleasanton. California. It does have train station for ACE trains
Network Northwest livery reminded me of SEPTA's 1990s GOH Livery.
Geoff definitely has a Preston Passport
ahh, yes, nothing like a good long walk along the canal. Yep, it's the Leeds and Liverpool canal.
Geoff Padiham is my neck of the woods, wish I knew you were in the area, I would not mind but I was at Burnley barracks that day, anyway the reason, why there are new ticket machines at these request stops as northern had a recent crackdown on fare dodgers, there's been many a time I've been on the trains on this line where there was no way to get a ticket other than the guard, and put it bluntly they were lazy and didn't check or care, I admit in the past I used this to my advantage, even when getting off the train at Burnley central to buy a ticket when the guard could not take card payments, but then the station staff just said wait a min for the train to leave and carry on. Also, the East Lancashire line used to run all the way to Skipton, as a double line and had a spur to Barnoldswick, there has been a lot of lobbying by SELRAP to get the line re-opened and electrified all the way to Skipton from Colne as the trackbed was protected. but as governments change there are setbacks. Oddly you mentioned Burnley barracks had a few passengers get off that's normal, why its a request stop I never know as every train I go on it stops! Passengers or not.
I enjoy that single tracking is a point of interest in the UK. Over here in the US we're lucky to have a double track...
Potential new challenge. Which line has the most mispronounced stations on its automated on-board announcements? Could appeal to railway nerds and pedants everywhere. Some of us who are both could get very excited. My money's on the West Highland Line.
Clean shaven. Perfect!👍
That was a very Pleasing-ton video, thank you very much.
You could have trumped The Whitewicks by looking under the bridge at Lostock Hall towards Preston to see the site of the Old Lostock Hall Station or all the Abandoned Barracks
Come back up north soon Geoff! Would love for you to do a vid about the Ordsall Cord. A bit of track and bridge constructed a few years back that connects Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria after years of now way to travel between the two by train (without changing of course)
I live in Hapton and was wondering when you shot the video. Nice and sunny and we have hardly had any sun in the last few weeks. Was the pub open? Not sure of the opening times at the moment. The landlord of The Railway tends to shut Wednesdays as he likes to take the train to Blackpool. The other pub on the canal The Bridge has been unoccupied for years. Good Job you didn't go in the Autumn, Hapton is one of those stations not all trains stop at because of leaves on the line. This can be very inconvenient.
we filmed this weeks ago back in August. the pub was open, yes! there was ONE other customer. we had a quick beer and then got on our way ... the Canal is awesome. i love canals too.
I live in Pleasington o welcome to a wonderful little village
Cracking route that
Great video. Loved the correspondent arrangement. When I saw a canal narrowboat in the midst of the video, I was a little overexcited because I’ve been hoping for a crossover or collaboration of two groups of TH-camrs I follow: UK narrowboat/canal/waterway vloggers and UK train enthusiasts. Consider connecting with Cruising the Cut, Foxes Afloat, or The Narrowboat Experience if you ever want to help make my TH-cam worlds collide (and perhaps tap into a new audience).
To the canals, all of them.
I never knew about Network Northwest - how did that pass me by? It looks like it was around from 1989 to 1997, so a fairly short time.
By the way there used to be a direct link from the Blackburn line to ormskirk/Liverpool line (been gone since 1972)
Thanks
Finally a town for me!
Will you be riding merseyrail for the end of the 507/508?
all the canal pubs!
Great video. I’m from Burnley by the way
I love your videos
Intrigued that the new bridge over the canal at Burnley Barracks is only one track wide so blocking off possible line upgrade in the future
Geoff visiting the local!
Geoff was round the corner and I missed him
That was ...brilliant
like the ride with pride poster
The 195s that go through are the ones that are going to York
Burnley Barracks to Colne was singled in 1986
