@@paulnewton2284 I'm pretty sure yeah, but u know what's funny, the second shiney I ever saw was a shiney Nidoqueen and... It belonged to the Battle Factory in Pokemon Emerald. 😭 But I at least got to play with it before having to give her back. Now that was a real kick to the ding ding, seriously! I mean I was just a little kid, so finding a shiney was something really special, so u can imagine the disappointment in seeing something as cool as a shiney Nidoqueen and not even being able to keep her.

    (commenting before watching)
I always wanted to love Piloswine in the GSC days but I could never really make it work. Not only do you get one so late into the run (hey at least its better than the treatment Houndour got...) but it was so low level I never wanted to train it. Excited to watch and see what you can do with a starter Swinub.
I don't care if you get too big to read all the comments, I will still post just to boost your channel until you reach stardom.
Edit: The first shiny I caught was a random full odds shiny in Crystal. I was just running from city to city for something and accidently ran into the grass.

I think he made the right call. Fighting types have high defense and Piloswine is meant to have decent Sp. Atk because the Ice type was special. Choosing a type strong against Water types would not be useful because they tend to have strong Sp. Def.

    • @wesleynewcomb
      @wesleynewcomb ปีที่แล้ว

@@jennytalia6724 All of the Fighting types in Gen 1 and 2 except Machop, Machoke, and Poliwrath have higher SpDef than Def. Machoke only has 10 more Def and Poliwrath only has 5 more. Piloswine's Atk is significantly better than his SpAtk.
Maybe you were thinking of before the Special split.
It stinks that Fighting types are such an obstacle because HP Rock would've helped with Gyarados and Charizard.

My first ever shiny was a Hoot-Hoot I found near the start of Gold version. I remember being incredibly excited since Ash also had a shiny Noctowl in the anime at the time. Tragically, I lost a shiny in that same run, a Tentacruel while heading to Blaine. I had run out of repels and it appeared when I was low on balls and failed to catch it. Since then I've never carried less than 30 Ultra Balls (or better depending on the game) in my inventory.

I've still never encountered a shiny.
Personally, I find the best way to get HM users is to start at night and catch Oddish and Psyduck in Ilex Forest (at night Psyduck can be encountered by just walking around), and grab Kenya. Very fast and easy.
Surprised you didn't try leftovers against Red.
Adding the Pokemon's currently held item to the info overlay would be a good addition.

    • @james_ford86
      @james_ford86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm guessing you don't play Pokemon very much or haven't played very long. I've encountered about 12 shinys legitimately throughout my playthroughs. But I've been playing since the days of R/B/Y, before shinys were even a thing. So, I've been playing for over 25 years. All the other shinys I got were either through glitches, wonder trade, or gameshark hacks.
Important note though: Even if you have played for a long time, if you don't grind much against wild Pokemon, you're unlikely to ever run into a shiny. Almost every shiny I've ever encountered happened when I wasn't actively looking for one. I would be grinding up my Pokemon's levels or EV training and one would randomly pop up. In the older games, your chances of encountering a shiny are like 1/8096, or something like that. So, it would stand to reason you'd have to go through thousands of wild encounters to encounter more than one. You might get lucky and encounter one early, but encountering two without grinding or specifically shiny hunting is extremely unlikely in those games.

I've run into about five myself.
They always show up when you arem't looking for them, and are a great reason to always ALWAYS have quite a few of the best kind of pokeball variant you can get on you. Running from or killing them sucks.

My first shiny was a Zubat. To this day, Crobat is one of my faves. Granted, Crobat's been one of my faves since its debut and is one of the reasons I don't care much for FR/LG. I'm still salty that I grinded up my golbat's happiness for nothing on my first playthrough.
Side note: This channel inspired me to work on a Firered hack where every pokemon is a Venonat/Venomoth with every possible typing (including Fairy), with appropriate abilities and learnsets. I'm still in the planning stage since I need to do some MAJOR moveset overhauls to make the game make some sort of sense. Related, I learned that a physical attack used by venomoth on venomoth deals almost as much damage as a special attack used by venomoth on venomoth. Just a fun oddity I stumbled on when mathing things out.

I like 50-60 BP moves with guaranteed secondary effects like Icy Wind, Snarl, Bulldoze, Rock Tomb and Low Sweep. Outspeeding the opponent is pretty important unless you're bulky AF.
PS. Assuming your attack and both defenses are maximized, the chance of not getting critted by any of Red's team ignoring Pikachu (which is harmless) is 15^5/16^5 = approx. 0.72 at best, which means you got lucky with the 9/10 run. Still, 0.72 is a pretty good ratio.

My first shiny was a Shroomish. It was just another Sapphire playthrough, nothing special until a chance encounter in Petalburg woods. Granted, at the time I had no concept of what a "shiny" Pokemon was, even writing off the red Gyarados as "just another color" and nothing more. Nevertheless I captured the little fella and immediately started training it. The "Golden Shroomish" as I called it was the envy of my friends. Of course, when ORAS rolled around I went and caught myself another shiny Shroomish using new game mechanics that made shiny hunting easier, if for no other reason than to complete the circle

My first shiny Pokemon was actually a Geodude in Crystal, in Route 46 (north of Route 29, which is the route west of New Bark Town). I'd just gotten Pokeballs, and remembered running into a Geodude in Route 46 when I was exploring on my way to Mr. Pokemon's house. Went back to go try and catch a Geodude, and the first one I ran into was shiny! I didn't know why there had been stars at the start of the battle, and didn't realize it was different color until after I'd caught it!
Became one of my main party members for the rest of the run. I also ran into a shiny Caterpie in Ilex Forest before the Reg Gyarados. Same playthrough, I also caught a shiny Magikarp while fishing later in the game.

Right now I'm playing Pokemon Infinite Fusion (a fangame where you can fuse any two pokemon and merge their appearance, types, abilities, movesets and stats) and I have a Phanpy mixed with a Swinub on my team. It's still ice/ground type and its moves are pretty standard but it's so cute, it's just like a Phanpy with Swinub's shaggy brown stripey fur. I hope it's not ugly when it evolves lol.
My first shiny was a gross green Zubat in Silver, and then shortly afterwards a Pidgeotto in Gold (really close to that old "shiny Pidgey" meme). I think both of them were encountered in the Kanto revisits.
On Silver's pokemon: it's easiest to see his development from "pokemon are only tools" to "pokemon are my friends" with his Crobat in the Mt. Moon battle since Golbat only evolves from high friendship. His trade evos are fully evolved by then too.
On the Earth Badge shape: Giovanni is named after the sacred Sakaki tree in Japanese, so his badge might be shaped like a leaf from said tree. Not positive though.

Swinub/Piloswine holds more to me as one of those later game Pokémon I've wanted to use but never got around to using. Younger me always wanted a full team earlier on.
Swinub/Piloswine really lived on the edge here with it's many incredibly close fights. A neat video overall and I look forward to Dennis' Fearow playthrough of Yellow version.

It was the first I CAUGHT though...when I was little, I was training to take on the Rock Tunnel and when I was training, I found a shiny blue Voltorb. I thought something was wrong with my game and I didn't like Voltorb much anyways, so I didn't even hesitate to take it out in one hit. I told my older sister later on and she said it was a shiny Pokemon and that I missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to catch one. I was disappointed but didn't let it get to me. That was the first one I ever found, about 16 years ago.

In nearly 25 years of playing pokemon I have had a grand total of 2 shiny encounters in the main games (not including the red gyarados). The first was a mareep in Soul Silver that I accidently knocked out with a critical hit, and the second was on a gen 3 rom, I forget which and I got a shiny Swalot which I did manage to catch.

The first non-gyrados shiny i caught was a machop also in Silver. I had no idea what it was, I actually thought it may be a glitch since I never saw another and caught it near Lake of Rage.. so it kind of made sense.
Anyway, I showed it to a friend at his house one day. Went to use the restroom and when I came back he said his mom said I had to leave. I didn't notice my cartridge was missing until I got home, and was never able to even get him to admit it, let alone get the game with the shiny back.

My first shiny wasn't until gen 6, and only because I manipulated the odds with chain fishing. It was a crawdaunt. I have only ever encountered 1 full odds shiny in my time, and that was a galarian Mr mime. Gen 6 is when I started shiny hunting, and to this day I still shiny hunt, I love it. I've just had terrible luck with chance encounters.

My first shiny was in silver. a tentacool, and i did exactly what you did in 25:35. Wnet for the soft sand and when i entered the water BOOM shiny tentacool... I was so excited because neither i nor my friends knew that was even a thing (i was like 8 or 9, and i was starting to learn english at school). And i was so afraid to lose it that i NEVER USED IT IN BATTLE, fearing it might lose the colors if it fainted xD
But this is not the best part. YEARS AFTER THAT, aldready in college, i got a nintendo ds and soul silver. and look and behold, i found and caught my second ever shiny: a tentacool. And I KID YOU NOT, I WAS DOING, AGAIN, WHAT YOU DID IN 25:35, just to see if soft sand was still in there. This time i had to bench my feraligator because i had a new "starter" in town.

The first shiny I ever caught was a shiny Voltorb in New Mauville! Still one of my favorite shinies to this day, along with the shiny Cottonee I got in my B2 playthrough.
Maybe this doesn't quite apply but I also tend to have pretty decent luck in ROMhacks too, like Touhoumon Purple. I've gotten at least a couple of shiny Chens from that game~

My first Shiny was a random Boldore in White or a random Linoone in Sapphire. I never really used them, but that Boldore did eventually return to me as another random encounter in Moon. I think that Boldore single.....handedly, not quite sure if it has hands, caused me to like Rock types as much as I do

My first full odds shiny was a Geodude in Crystal. As a result, had to make him a team staple and get the oh so cleverly named "SHINYROCK" into the hall of fame. Even in crystal clear (a rom hack w normally full odds, but a method to raise chances) I've yet to catch my most saught after shiny, a Staryu/Starmie. Knocked out 350ish of em, and with 10 rerolls no shiny. Only other full odds shiny's have happened VERY recently, with a Koffing and a Gastly in 2 different playthroughs of Fire Red.

My first shiny was a Gastly in Levander Tower in FireRed, full 1/8192 odds. My second one was an Adamant Meditite in Brilliand Diamond (first encounter in that grass, and it even was the pokémon I was looking to add to my team), full 1/4096 odds.
I also got a shiny Minun in OmegaRuby, but it was with a DexNav combo and my brother did all the work, so I don't count that to my own shiny luck.

I never considered using a Piloswine before because the truffle boar just looks weird after evolving from the cute Swinub. Mamoswine looks cool though because it's part mammoth and elephants were my thing when I was a kid before Pokémon took ahold.
Also my first shiny was a Kadabra in Leaf Green. Never got to transfer it up because I lost the cart 1 week before I beat Pokemon Diamond and gained access to the Pal Park.

To answer your opening Q, the first shiny of my own that I encountered was a Fearow in the postgame of Platinum version, outside the survival area. I make that distinction because when I was too young to know what a shiny was, I encountered a shiny Spinda on my brother’s copy of Emerald and ran away from it, not thinking anything of it. The biggest mistake young me ever made playing Pokémon.

My first shiny was an Igglybuff from the random egg in Crystal. I remember seeing the screen effect when I sent it into battle but I remember not liking training Jigglypuff from Red and Blue so it ended up boxed. Then I lost my Crystal cartridge so I can't prove it's existence.

My first non-Gyarados shiny I found was right before Gen 3 released in Pokémon Silver.
Since internet wasn't super widespread back then, I was wondering how many different Pokémon you could find inside Rock Smash boulders, so I ended up testing it out myself by repeatedly breaking them.
Ended up finding a Shiny Krabby in there. Since I had no idea about how shinies worked back then, I actually never evolved it. I was scared it would lose its sparkles if I did.
Sadly, my Pokémon Silver cartridge's battery ran out, so I lost that save file. I guess I could try breeding one in Pokémon Shield for nostalgia sake since they're much easier to acquire there.

    I've never found a shiny in any of the main games (other than the obligatory Gyarados). With how many of these games I've played, you'd think I'd have gotten one by now. ;_;
Hilariously, my husband found two shiny Bidoofs in the same playthrough, and has never found another shiny otherwise.
If we allow spin-offs, my first shiny was Ninetales in the Mystery Dungeon remake. I'm actually hunting for the only four I'm missing now (Starmie, Altaria, Metagross, and Espeon). They're much easier to find than in the main games. I've also gotten several in Legends of Arceus with my first being Vaporeon (not counting the guaranteed Ponyta), but again, they're a lot easier to find there. I will say that with the Eeveelutions being my favorites and Vulpix/Ninetales being my favorites after them, it is funny that the spin-off shinies I did find first were some of my most loved Pokémon.
(Yeah I know Legends of Arceus is apparently a main game rather than a spin-off, I just refer to it as such because of how different it is gameplay-wise, and in this case, it's ridiculously easy for shiny hunting).
TL;DR: Cursed to never find a natural shiny in main games, not so cursed as to miss them in others with higher odds.

The interesting thing about Piloswine is that its actually one of the best mons to use in game. Yes in a lot of its best MUs (namely Clare and Lance) they do possess moves that fold it, but it makes Piloswine a glass cannon. I mean it is the best Johto ice type. I also once did a run where I wanted to use a Piloswine on my team, so I had one of many Smeargle (I like to catch a lot of them in Gen 2 runs) to Sketch Rock Slide from Sudowoodo (it missed on my end so the Smeargle sketched it) and Blizzard from Pryce's Piloswine in order to get the perfect moveset for it. I was even lucky enough when it bred it had max DVs. This was around a couple years ago. I know Ice path is fairly late, but honestly I don't really consider anything within Johto gym badge range to be too late game, as you still have room to use them. Hell I've used Skarmory before.
To me what I classify as late game for Johto would be anything after Claire basically, once you cross the waterfall in Tohjo Falls that's when late game kicks in, as you're approaching post game. By which even mons like Piloswine have major story events like Clare, victory road rival, Suicune battle (if you choose) Claire and elite four, which are all pretty lengthy events. Plus it has all of Kanto on top of that. Its why Sneasel got the better deal in Crystal because surprisingly Sneasel does well in Johto. I mean considering how beelined Chuck to Jasmine is and Chuck is considered mid game, that to me says Ice path is fair game to classified as late mid leading to late game.
I do find it odd that Swinub or Piloswine can't learn dig, but can learn Earthquake. lol It's the same for the Nidos. Or how Crobat is unable to learn Sludgebomb, which is why I find Crobat underwhelming to use in the original games, its movepool is just bad. No STAB option or coverage moves outside of Hidden Power variants. Even Noctowl I consider a better flyer because at least it can serve a purpose in helping catch roamers with Sleep (which I find to be more effective as it seems they choose to stay in once slept, at least from my experience) as well as having a nice combo with Hypnosis + Dream Eater/Nightmare.
I really do think people overcriticize elements of this game a lot, they are flawed for sure. I wouldn't argue against that, but a lot of the criticisms these game get I feel can be hyperbolic or I disagree with, like team building. It's actually not as limited as people claim, in fact Pokemon games always have some sort of limit on team building. Really outside of the Dark types (excluding Umbreon and Sneasel in Crystal) Misdreavus and Slugma every Johto mon is in Johto, though I do dislike how some are rare when they shouldn't be, considering they are the regions new mons. People sleep on the Odd Egg, which regardless of what you get (unless its Igglybuff, since Jigglypuff can literally be caught outside the Daycare, bad decision to make it common to hatch) it will produce an excellent team slot. I mean Jynx is the strongest Ice type in the game, Magmar isn't in Crystal until Mt Silver, the Hitmons are all Fighting types useful against Dark and Steels (as well as the many trainers who use normal types) Elekid and Pichu can give you two useful electric types. And with the avaliability of stones in Crystal (another reason to play it over Gold and Silver) it creates more team options. Cloyster, Jolteon, Vaporeon, Flareon, Starmie, Exeggutor, Vileplume, Raichu, Victrebeel all become options because of the stones. Which is a wide roster, and there might be others I'm forgetting too.
