Some basic patterns for the beginner Djembe player to practice. I made these so anyone busy learning this drum can play along with others without having to feel overshadowed by better players.

Hatts off Matt, great set of basis patterns you are showing here, thanx a lot!
These videos are perfect. Thank you for taking the time to upload them. Blessings x
Thank you very much.
Thanks Matt, your a good teacher. Good basic beats I learn from watching you. Keep up the good work and know lots of folks are learning from your vids
I appreciate that!
Technically, it doesn't take long to learn both video's in addition to the 3rd one. At least that's how it went with me. Now I will add these rhythms to my drum circle. Thanks Matt for sharing. Do you anticipate another series of video's? I hope so.
+Nahulanham That's great. Perhaps later this year.
If this is beginner's, what would you consider intermediate or advanced?
+Nahulanham The use of slaps with proper technique and accuracy. Speed. More 'triplet'-feel patterns. I purposely left out slaps out of these vids as they are a challenge for the beginner drummer.
Love from India!
And greetings from South Africa!
This is so awesome! I have always wanted to learn how to play the djembé. But now I've watched your videos I immediately want to buy one and play!
Super cool!

That is fantastic, I have watched and commented! :) Thank you for sharing!
Very nice thankyou sir
Most welcome
I really appreciate the video. Thank you so much. The alternations of #12 are so cool. But I'm such a beginner I actually don't know how it happened..
Glad it was helpful!
🥰Love from Pakistan❤
1st like 🥰😇
God Bless you in Jesus Christ Mighty name...Ameen 🙏😊
Awesome! Thanks! :)
Thank you
Seriously helpful for me!! I'm a free form drummer and have a hard time playing rhythms. Thanks again! :)
Love these videos. Only comment as someone trying to follow along is that a shot from the top to be able to see the pattern would be easier for me- a complete and total beginner. I find myself not using the right hands and trying to transpose- is that the right or left hand. Otherwise- these are awesome!
Thanks, I will consider that for my next set of videos (one day!)
ow... you are so beatifull and so cute playing
+Roberta Giacomelli Um, thanks!
I just think long hair makes you more handsome😊. Thank you a lot coz I 've learned much!
Thanks sir
No problem!
Hi Matt, what is you intro music ? This sounds really good for jammin' or just listening and I wish i could discover this band and more of the same style. Thanks in advance.

I dig these patterns! You come up with these?
Yes I do!
Ugh. Seeing this videos make me want to impulse buy a djembe.
So what's stopping you? :)
@@MattHains a bigger goal is holding me back. :( one day for sure though I'd add to my collection of instruments.
Matt - for the two variations on pattern #12, do you have the patterns written (or transcript)? I really like them. Thanks.
+Jaime Will have to look... mail me on matt.hains@gmail.com to remind me!
Nice woooooooow!!!
Thanks a lot
Could you advise me of what size and any specs etc of a djembe drum to start with for an adult beginner.
Matt i am inspired by your technique and hope to one day be able to play well.
Regards to you and all the.
Mich S 12 Inch head, tightly stretched skin should be a good start!
Matt, these are the best videos for beginner djembe players on the internet. What are the chances of getting just a few more patterns ....?
+Jennie Green How I would love to find time...! :)
hallo matt. i'm ucok from Indonesia. If we want to play funk music, so which one patterns can we use ? thank you very much
Follow your heart and the right rhythm will come.

YES !!! Slow... give us time to get it.. no talk talk talk,.... YAY !!!
Yup! :)
What is the name of the music introducing the video, please? I have been looking for this style for a long time without success. Thk you in advance for your answer.
Monette Marino-Keita - the album is Coup d'Eclat
Matt Hains. Thx you very much (Beebop)
keren
Hello Matt! How do you do the Slap S, please? Is it exactly the same as Tone T, just you hit stronger? Or is there something more/else?
Thank you so much for the tuto! Playing drums brings so much joy!
Upd: perhaps anyone can leave here a link to a tutorial how to play a slap?
The slap is definitely not hitting harder. It's a technique that is very difficult for beginners to learn. It is best taught to you by someone, face to face, who has experience and can slap properly.
@@MattHains thank you Matt!
I like number 12 I think I'm going to practice that one.
Go for it!
So great! But for me it would be better if all bars were played slowly before and in an extra video at faster speed.
What rhytms are you playing?
Mostly whatever I could make up that would be very easy for a beginner to follow and play along with others.
More videos pleeeeeeeze!
Can you make more time! :)
@@MattHains oh well...i can see how busy you are....3 years to reply to my comment 😂😂😂
I'll see you again in 3 years! :) Hahaahahaa
Super super super super super
Thank you
Hi Matt. Love your videos. Trying to move along but Pattern #8: B - - - | T T T T | - - B - | - B - - has me a bit confused. When I watch you it looks more like BBB - | T T T T . What am I missing?
Hi there, I have not looked at it for some time. Will have a look when I get a chance. I hope I didn't miss something either!
In the last variation did you mute the slap at the end?
+Rishab Mazumdar I don't think so
Then what is that technique called where you were slapping and holding the center of the drum simultaneously?(In pattern 12)
Simply a muted tone. Keep one hand on the centre of the drum to mute the skin and play a nice crisp (muted) tone.
Thanks Matt!
I'm curious, what teacher taught you these rhythms?
I've been playing djembe for almost 15 years, 4 years consistently under my current teacher (who is actually in the video of your Senegal trip), and
the closest thing I know to them are warm up exercises.
I'm not trying to be critical but you may want to clarify what rhythms your teaching.
Overall I really like how you presented your videos. I would just suggest you talk or list more about what your playing.
Again only a suggestion!
Hi there, these are not patterns taught to me. Hence no talking and no names of rhythms. I created these rhythms for absolute beginners to just have something to grab onto to be able to play with others and enjoy the drum. I did this on purpose as so many beginners get put off because of all the "technique" talk etc.. I just wanted them to have a basic pattern they could play and enjoy and feel happy when playing.
Oh ok I see, thanks for clarifying!
No problem, you're very welcome.
7 and 3 are the same right? Just different starting point.
+santiago2212 hm. not sure about that.
definitely!
I've been wondering my ass off :D thought I'm stupid but it's the same
Perhaps, have not looked at this for some time. But even so, a different starting point on any rhythm has a completely different feel when combined with other drum parts.
are you going to do more for beginners... ?
Rastafarian Wish I had the time! :)
:( awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
More I want more 😜
Please send me TIME! :)
Some patterns were repeated
I don't think so.
Please, don't go to fast, show it clearly and slow.
I'll try!
