But then I came to realise that there was a huge difference between his actions and words when he is not under the spotlight, and when he is (asked a question directly in an interview etc).

I just hope he keeps going with his solo work... at first when he went solo I was worried whether it would be a 1 and done thing because it was like that when he did his duet album with Woohyun. I am glad he keeps pushing foward and I hope he knows he has many fans rooting for him.

To hear what Jonghyun said about not sharing his personal matters with the group, looking back on it now I can see what he meant, but it's sad to look at this interview from that perspective. I'm glad to see this interview. I think a lot of people with depression don't really share those details with those around them. Especially not coworkers. I recall in another interview one time Jonghyun himself said that he treats them more as business relations, not as friends. I think that might have been when they were on Happy Together during the 1 of 1 promotions. I wish he would've shared more, but I don't fault him for it. I understand why it is hard to talk about your issues, especially if you don't want to burden others. Even though those people won't actually feel burdened usually.
I think they knew about some of his issues. When you live with someone shit kinda happens naturally and Jjong clearly wasn't hiding he had seasonal depression and insomnia even with the public. Minho was keeping an eye on him, during winters from what I've heard. I still don't know what he meant by this. I think it might be that in his mind Shinee was work and came before any personal matters and it's better to not be in each other's way, but the truth is we'll never know what he shared and how he really felt and what was the full spectrum of his relationship with each of them. I do wonder if he was seeing them more as friends than colleagues, would that have helped, but this is the usual What if questions that come up after anyone's suicide. We have to believe he kept relations at a comfortable level for himself and knew what he was doing, cause he knew better what was in his heart. What if questions will always come up - unfortunately, suicide tends to corrupt the part in this way, more than most other deaths. It doesn't matter now tho - the past is set in stone and permanent as sad as it is.
Anyone who’s been a professional will know that you’re relationship with you’re work colleagues is “professional” first & friendship second. I have been friends with some work colleagues over the years, but our work relationship takes priority, until such time as we don’t work for the same business anymore so we are now just friends. So I understand what Jonghyun meant. However their relationship was a lot deeper than business. We have seen that over the years & since Jong’s passing the pain the members have been in goes WAY beyond that of a work colleague alone. Their bond is something very special. Maybe they ALL appreciate it more now.
They wont last this long if he treat them as business. What they have a good friendship. As a person who has Depression I dont talk to my friends that much coz I feel like Im a burden and will ruin their happiness coz of me
