Rent to own is one of the biggest scams out there. Pay 10x the value of something that has already been used. I always hated when Rent to Own computers would come into the shop I worked at, those things were nasty.
I've never Rent to Own, because I always thought that it ended up actually costing more money that saving the money to purchase whatever I need. I could be wrong but that's how I've looked at these Rent to Own places.
If anything, it sounds like you're ***way*** underestimating how much more expensive rent-to-own is. On Amazon, an Xbox Series X 1TB is currently selling for $479. On Rent-a-center, it's $25 a week for 55 weeks, for a total of $1,374. On Aaron's Rent-to-Own, it's $1,638. On Ace Rent-to-Own, it's a whopping $2,277. And it's not limited to Xboxes. For example, a 55" LG TV (model number 55UQ7570PUJ) costs $500 on Amazon. On Rent-a-center, the same TV is $1,301. Generally, you can expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 to 3 times the normal price.
Some businesses predate on a clientele that has few options, with offerings which they know will look very attractive to that specific target clientele, while being very much not in their interest to engage with. They will capitalize on the severe disparity between their lawyers' understanding of their contracts and how they market they products, and their clients' understanding of the same. They will market their products and payment schemes in one manner, and then offer a contract to sign where their client acknowledges that the contract is a fully integrated contract which supersedes any pre-contractual discussions under the parol evidence rule.
"They're not going to keep harassing me on the telephone?" They're not harassing you, they're collecting a debt. If you pay it off, and they keep calling you, THAT'S harassment.
I checked the reviews for this company and they're at 4.8 stars on google. How is that possible when their business model is basically ripping people off?
I mean if you think about it, if you charge something on a credit card you pay at least double for an item. Not everyone can charge and pay it off by the next statement. That’s also legal and accepted.
What kind of credit card are you using where you pay at least double??? The current average APR on a credit card in the US is 24.72%. For a $500 XBox to cost you "at least double," you'd have to keep rolling that full balance forward, month after month, making zero payments, for 2.9 years. As of October 2024, the highest APR on a credit card in the US is 33.24%. Even at that rate, the worst there is, you'd have to make zero payments for two full years for its price to be "at least double".
Does anyone else have audio problems? They seemed to continuously talk over each other. is it just my problem? Or did anyone else experience that as well? Thanks in advance
5 more payments and I will own my washer and dryer.😊 Couldn't live without it and being able to make payments is a blessing for me. Plus its under warranty so if anything happens it will get fixed 🤷🏼 it works out great for me and my financial situation. And if you pay on time no body calls and "harasses" you. It is not through this company tho
Your situation is smart. Sometimes if someone does not have the best credit but are in real need of something like a washer or a dryer it is reasonable to think you will need to make payments. And with that usually includes paying a higher interest rate than those with great credit. In your case you are honorable. You are making the payments. You truly needed the washer and dryer. You are probably taking care of the product because it will be yours soon. I do not feel the same as the lady renting an XBOX for some dude that takes off with it. She then pretends to be the victim because she will have to pay a great deal more than she would if she would have saved the money and bought it outright. Good job on your sound financial decision. There is nothing worse than going to the laundry mat. In college we would meet there on the weekends. I have a washer and dryer on each floor of my house. I hope you live your best life.
So a grown woman thinks that “renting” an XBOX is a sound financial decision and when she is held responsible for the product that got “stolen” while in her care she then plays the victim of some fraud. Here is an idea. If you as a grown woman do not have the money to buy an XBOX then tell the deadbeat you rented it for NO!
Rent to own is a scam, I agree, however people pay for the convenience of having an expensive item they wouldn't normally be able to purchase in one payment. Some companies are worse than others but most folks know the deal when they go there. It works out like 50x more than the actual cost but again, you're paying for convenience.
when a defendant starts off with _"okay well first of all..."_ you can tell it's going to be a wild ride
Or " well to be honest with ya" its like a clue to get comfy you are going to be sitting a while.

Rent to own is a scam but you did sign a contract
I always felt these cases were sad: poor people with poor credit unable to look after furnishings they are paying over the odds for.

You are going to spend your life poor if you buy things you can't afford. You end up with a $1000 judgement for a $500 item.
