Public Safety Training Center? Certainly glad that you have such a beautiful gun range - how much training do you provide for de-escalation techniques, the importance of public relations and empathy, constitutional rights, etc. Perhaps "Public Safety" would be better addressed by stressing something other than shooting guns. Those will be your "public" on the other end of your gun - protecting them is the point, isn't it?

Thanks for your question, Jeff. We actually provide a lot of training on de-escalation techniques. In fact, every time we train officers in use of force we talk about the importance of trying to de-escalate the situation. We have recently just had a use of force in-service that taught these same concepts. Our new Chief's vision is really helping us reach out to the public and try to build bridges of understanding as well. We also train on constitutional rights, case law and upcoming trends in law enforcement. We try to train our officers every day in some way, shape or form so they can provide the citizens of Fond du Lac with the help they need. We have also added a Crisis Co-response team which helps our citizens with mental health issues. It is often these situations that can lead to force being used. This team pairs a police officer and Social worker together so they can get our citizens in crisis the help that they need. We do not want to have to use force on anyone that we do not have to. Unfortunately, in this world that we live in, some people want to cause harm to other people. This is why it is important that we train with our firearms as well. In our training center, officers are trained to think and shoot. We challenge are officers with shoot/no shoot scenarios, so they are able to make the correct decision, in what would be the most stressful time in their life. The reason this is called the Public Safety training center is because we also share this area with our Fire Fighter friends.

I'm too old to join up now but your Fond du Lac looks nothing like ours up here in Canada which has about 5 cops, fully staffed. Good luck with your recruiting efforts!

I wonder what our communities would look like if instead of hiring more police officers (law enforcement, punishment), we put that money into rehabilitation/community outreach/social programs. But then they wouldn't have their tacticool military gear and armored trucks to pretend with I guess.

Those social workers will do you a lot of good when there is an active shooter or bomb threat

Maybe if people would stop being antisocial dickheads, and prosecutors and judges would actually lock criminals up, more police wouldn't be necessary.
