I got a leaf from my friend nextdoor 50 years ago. I was 5 years old. I'm 55 years old now. My plant is 1,5 meter high and fits with big problems through the door. In the winter she stays cool and dry and in the spring she goes outside till the first cold
Omg....that is incredible. Do you have Instagram? I'd love to see a picture of this plant if you want to share it
This is amazing
I would LOVE to see this, my tree must be 10years, but I'm in love and now have two plants from it I'm hoping to give ti love ones
What a fantastic story! It's great that you never lost your interest in growing it. I've got one I grew from a leaf too, but it's only 5 years old! 🪴
Wow, I really hope the cuttings I got from my mom 5 years ago or so will last another 45years.
Always got jealous about people's giant gorgeous beautiful jade plants and wondering what I was doing wrong... turns out my 10-year jade is a dwarf variety!
Oh no! Time to get yourself the real thing!
Perhaps too much water ?
I have a jade plant in a pot i grew from a cutting 30 years ago. I prune regularly and its only about 40cm tall, but its got a stump so thick it would take both my hands to wrap around it. One of my most treasured plants
Wow! That is awesome. Do you have an IG account....I'd love to see a picture of it
FINALLY! Someone who doesn't repeat themselves 5 times and talks so slow that I have to put the playback speed to 1.50!!! I have been winning with jade plants for about 4 years now, but wanted to learn to bulk up the stalk and VOILA! This taught me how. Thank you and I am looking forward to watching more of your videos! ~ Ruthie
Thanks so much for this awesome comment and welcome to the channel!
My very old jade plant rewarded me once with beautiful small white flowers, it was amazing. :)
I heard they do that if you keep them in cold conditions during winter (for example unheated closed balcony). Unfortunately I don't have these conditions so mine are at a room temperature all year long (obviously warmer in the summer, but definitely not cold enough in winter to encourage blooming).
I’ve seen them flower and my aloes almost every year I keep in full sun
Hi, I live in sunny (!) Scotland and had a beautiful old jade I had brought over from Ireland (I moved around a lot). I put the plant out in the garden in the summer and one day I was out all day and it turned out to be really hot, when I got home the plant had collapsed from the heat. I brought her back inside and after a few days it seemed that she was going to be ok. Funny thing is, the branches had all drooped down but then started to turn up at the ends again as she recovered and she looked like a big candelabra! I had lots of comments about that shape, everyone wondered how I got a jade to grow that way. I eventually had to give her to a friend as I couldn't tote her around any more. She's still going strong at 37 years, living happily in a conservatory, looking like a large candelabra tree. Never give up on your jade!
Jade plants are such wonderful plants. I really wish we could share pictures in the comment section here because I would love to see that. Jade.
I inherited a 30-50 year old jade from my grandmother! It's a 3' tree! But it's definitely not as happy with me as it was with her, so I'm glad I found this video
Wow! I wish you could share a picture....I love seeing other people's Jades
My cuttings came from a plant started back in the 1800s its been handed down through the generations. All of the female cousins have a plant started from cuttings from the old girl.
In the same boat of trying to make my inherited plants as happy as before 😬 idk how old mine is, but its double sized from the at least 10yo ones. I was gonna prune it and give the cuttings away but it has those gross round bug thingies. I thought it was just some dripping from the flowers 😐 welp
@@dianamorris5327 I recently found out my mom had a variegated hoya canosa from my Baba and now get to think of her every day even more than already. Never knew that's what I needed 💗
@@dianamorris5327That's awesome!!!
I found a single leaf on the ground in a plantshop and the lady said i could have it. That was 6 years ago and since then it turned into a 25cm tall bonsai looking tree. It branches out continually I never had to cut it and has a beautiful red rim on the leaf's edges. I love that little plant!
Interesting vid!
That is awesome! They do branch out naturally but sometimes the branches get a bit leggy.....so I prune mine back to keep the branches shorter and more condensed
Tip #6: If you live in a warm climate like L.A. and you have a giant, gorgeous jade plant with a trunk that has about as big as a medium-sized tree that has always grown outside because the pot is way too big to be inside, then you move to an even warmer climate like Palm Springs that’s only a couple of hours drive from LA and you just assume that the plant will be fine in the heat, you assume wrong, and in late August your plant will look a little droopy and within a matter of days will basically melt and you will be left with a mushy stump that is definitely dead. The secret to growing jade plants in the desert: bring them inside during the months of July through September when temps regularly reach 120ºF, and they wil thrive!
Yes, that was weirdly specific…. Great video!
Okay... This is now one of my new favorite comments. I love how it's just one entire sentence with a hint of sarcasm hahaha. But sorry to hear about your Jade plant. I sure hope you have bought another one
Thx!! I live in Phx and was wondering about the heat!
❤❤❤ I’m in PS thanks ❤❤
Recently, my two medium sized jade plants died from root rot. I rescued some babies from the mother plant and planted them in another pot. I will be using tips from this video to ensure that they don't develop the same issues the mother plant had. Thank you sir, have a good day! :)
I'm so sorry to hear of your jades, but glad you were able to salvage some cuttings. I have many Jade videos if you need to know more!
I've been growing Jade plants like this for 30 years, great knowledge. Spot on advice 👏
Thanks Rouben!
in Maryland mine is in direct sun all day, I can water it everyday, the leaves get thick and the tips turn purple (good) i bring it in by OCT, and today was the first day I watered it all winter. The lady who took care of the plants at lowe's said the leaves can go paper thin before being watered.....If i want another plant, cut it, stick it in dirt BAM! you got another jade plant...love them
I just got my Jade Plant, she’s a baby. But in many years to come I’m excited to see her prosper with the correct care. Thank you so much! Great Video!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍
Best of luck!
theres a large jade plant in my school that i watered because it had clearly been neglected and the leaves were shrivelled and then the lab technician came and not only gave me one of her huge succulents because shes retiring soon, but also a stem cutting from her jade plant. i put it in some soil a few days ago and im so excited to watch it grow!
So happy I came across your video. I didn’t know a jade plant could get so big. I have been doing pruning and propagations and have several. The mother plant is pretty big but it is leggy. Plan to give a good pruning very soon. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Tierra!
I am actually going to buy a new jade plant. A friend gave me some of her leaves, but they never started to make little ones. You channel is wonderful for learning new things!
Thanks so much Barbara
I notice that Spring is a good Season for that.
My jade tree just died after 15 years this winter.
so i saved a little plant of it and now i pray that this little piece will surfive
That is terrible and I'm sorry to hear that. What do you think happened to it?
I'm wondering as well
@@EverythingPlants lol had never seen that someone replied.
it just started to rot away from the inside (roots where okay, but the stem got mushy)
the little part I saved didn't make it is never properly rooted
Great video! My jades are the easiest plants I have lol. They're about 8 yrs old now and starting to get a tree type look to them now. Thanks for sharing!
They are such beautiful plants
Great video! Jade's are one of my favorite houseplants, I have propagated so many I've lost count! Many of mine are still enjoying the end of summer outside. They all have had growth spurts this summer. 🌱
That is awesome Sandy. I've lost count too
I have one that came in a planter from a florist that I wanted to transplant. You answered all of my questions! Thank you for an informative video that was not an hour long.
Never underestimate a jade plant, mine is 15 - 20 years old and has gone three months without sun or plant light every winter, it currently lives in a large self watering pot as it is so big and top heavy, it is pruned every spring to make it more compact . It lives outdoors during the summer and is now so big that I can't lift it myself, the trunk is bigger than my wrist and I'm a big woman.
That is so awesome. If you have an Instagram account I'd love to see a picture of your plant. Does it ever flower? I know it needs a period of rest through the winter months with slightly cooler temperatures in order to get it to flower
@@EverythingPlants It has never bloomed, from what I understand, jade plants bloom in winter when the temperature is just above freezing. where I live it's too cold outside and too hot inside. I also have the disadvantage of living on the north side of a mountain, so the sun doesn't shine on our house for three months. No intagram
I have admired your Jade plants for a long time. I just recently acquired a decent size one & am looking fwd to getting a large tree type plant in the future by following your tips & pruning tips! Thank you for your videos!
That is awesome!!!
That was incredibly helpful, thank you! Now I see where I went wrong with my plants. I didn't realise they needed pruning so one has just broken and the other is about to have the same fate. I'm taking some cuttings and starting again, this time following your advice 🙂
Good luck Leah 👍
Since you gave me the guts to do a major chop on my old Jade, she is beautiful and happy 🤩😍🤩. I think pruning is necessary to keep them strong and prevent leggy branches putting stress on the base.🥰 Thank you for saving my Jade!🥰🥰😘
I have a gorgeous jade that got mealy bugs about 3 years ago, I cut off all the leaves and it grew back beautifully, I love it.
Great! 😀 I have a very large jade. When I prune I throw the trimmings in water to root. You have new jade babies very fast! If you trim off large parts you have large babies. I love my jades and all the recipients of the babies are enjoying them as well.😀
You sound like me! I've propagated and given away so many Jade cuttings over the years
Very informative, thank you. My Mom passed away and she could grown anything. I have some of her plants and of course they are very sentimental to me. I don’t want to kill them. I’ve always grow a lot of things outside during the Summer, and I only started growing house plants a couple years ago. I lost a few plants in the beginning to root rot, and I’ve learned how to avoid that now, I hope. I’m extremely careful with watering. My Mom’s Jade plant is beautiful. However, on one side the branches have grown a little taller, probably the side facing the window. I will wait until Spring to cut them back a little and even it up. Great information about the type and size of the pot also. I was about to repot this one, but now thinking, maybe better to wait a bit. Thanks for your help.
I am so sorry to hear about your mom. That is one of the reasons my jades are special to me is because it reminds me of my grandfather, who passed away many years ago. Most people that I talk to have some close connection with these plants whether it holds memories or was given to them by a close family member. If you have IG I'd love to see your mothers jade plant. And anytime you have a question, please feel free to ask on IG messenger. Take care
Very nice you are caring for your mom's plants. God bless!
@@EverythingPlants I’m setting up IG, and I will look for you. Thank you for your reply, so very sweet of you.
@@npeace312 Your reply is so appreciated, and may God bless you as well.
I got a small one from home depot 30 years ago and it’s huge, it spends summer outside in the sun and it’s beautiful. The best planting pots for them are clay pots!
This is awesome. I wish you could share pictures on here
@@EverythingPlants ya me too 😆
Thanks for the helpful, straightforward, video. Love that "tree", and will use your great tips to, hopefully, grow my jade plant into something like that.
Thanks Kathleen!!!
Thankyou for the advice, your plants are beautiful 🌴🌞
Perfect short tutorial, thank you. I have 6 jade plants (all fairly small) and regularly propagate a new one to give away. Question: Why does my jade plant often feel like the leaves have grains of sand on them?
Minerals from your water come out from the leaves leaving white dots
I started some leaves last year. I have two tiny baby plants. I can’t wait to watch it develop over the years. With your tips I should have a lovely beefy branchy jade plant in a few years
Yay!!!! Nice work Jenny
wow, i saw some huge ones in portugal! and i fell in love! so i took a ~3" cutting in the baggage and now he has nice roots, looking forward to growing it big, thanks for the video!!
Anytime Hubcaps219
Yay! My favourite type of video 😍 such beautiful plants!
I love them too!
this is probably the best informing video about how to keep jade plants I've seen. Thanks for that!
I grow several of mine hydroponically in Leca and they absolutely love it
Wow! That's awesome
They are one of my favourites because they are quite hard to kill ;) I am currently trying to grow a new one out of an older one, hope it works.
Yes, they are great houseplants and good luck with your propagation, Birgitt
Hi this video is so helpful for the how too of growing and keeping Jade and succulents. Had no idea about the pruning. Thanks a bunch🦋
Wow! I've been doing everything wrong with my jade plant. Thank you for sharing this❤
Before watching the video, what type of care did you give it?
I have modified my Jade plants over plenty of years each plant is grafted with willow roots so it grows in a marshy ground pads are never thin and this also worked on my cactus
Wow! That is amazing. Do you have any videos of this?
My fiancé bought me a jade plant a year ago and I think it’s tripled in size.. way more than 2 inches. I am actually freaking out because it’s suddenly so big and bushy, I’ve barely touched it, and now I have got to prune it asap this spring.
Literally barely touched the thing and it’s gone wild. Highly recommend
Wow! You are doing something right. Nice work
Same here. No sun light in the corner of my room no light. And its grown 5 to 7 inches. I cut it back a bit and left overs in another pot see how it goes
They may be getting leggy rather than growing. Oh wait, you said bushy! Wow. Just a very happy jade!
My dad took 1 leaf of a wild growing jade plant on Gran Canaria 20 years ago, we cloned it and now I have my own beautiful plant growing in the window (Sweden).
Thank you for this guide! You covered everything I need to know very succinctly!
Glad it was helpful!
this is one of the most helpful videos i've seen!
Glad it was helpful! I have many more!
Instead of trimming mine down, I shape and cut it back minimally- I ise twine to hold the branches up where they need to be so they don't sag. They build enough strength in time. Now my tree is 3ft tall and very lush 🤩🤩😍😍
Very nice! Do you have Instagram? I'd love to see your jade plant
@Everything Plants no socials for me anymore, unfortunately ! If only I could post a picture on this thread! 🥴😅
Super informative! I have a 60 years old Jade from an aunt, and this video will definitely help it grow even older
That is awesome! I wish we could share photos in the TH-cam comments because I'd love to see your plant
Thanks for the encouraging video. I always learn something new.
Thanks Norma
Today, I realized that my pot is too large, so I’ll have to take care of that.
oh dear i just bought a pot without a drainage hole and i replanted my jade but put stones in the bottom. Glad I saw this video i'm gonna buy a plastic pot to put inside it and replant it asap
I can confirm that jade plants will do just fine when you propagate them through LECA and let them live in there afterwards. My tests from last year are all showing new growth and do not seem to mind their prolongated wet roots :D
Most houseplants can remain in water long term. It's when you place them in soil that stays wet for too long and deprives the roots of oxygen/airflow
I have a jade plant in my cubicle at work. It never sees the actual sun but it seems to be okay with getting around 10-12 hours of artificial lighting from the fluorescent bulbs above my desk!
Ya is so sweet! GOOD JOB!
Beautiful Jade plant. 💚🪴🌿🌱💚
Thanks! It's my favorite 😍
Thanks for the info. I would love to see a video on how to start a new jade plant from a cutting or leaf.
I have many Jade videos on my channel....I'll try and find it for you
I was searching for videos on youtube to help my plant and came across this! I was actually a little scared earlier because one of the leaves came off (someone had ripped it off) and was not sure what to do. Hopefully I can replant the leaf though (unless there’s no hope). You have such an amazing plant, and I hope mine will be like that some day too :)
Just take that leaf and literally place it on top of soil. You don't have to do anything with it. It will grow roots all by itself and when it does then you can just water around the roots that search down into the soil
@@EverythingPlants Thank you!
Wow, thank you. I’m going to give Jade another try!
Yes!!! You can do it!
A great explanation video in less than 10 minutes. I love it!
Thanks Emmanuel
I was told not to water it often and keep away from sunlight 😢 the leafs are soft and burning out thanks for the video I'll try to care for it
This video was right on time, love my jade plants ! My big ones are outside in the ground and I think one has scale! Not sure what to do? Any tips? Robin in FL🐊
I've never dealt with scale but other then time consuming I've heard they aren't terrible if there is just a few. Take rubbing alcohol and a qtip and wipe them away.
Thanks Jeff,I will give that a try!
even in arid conditions here in AZ I still add 50% pumice to my cactus mix and haven't had root rot since...
Nice! Thanks for commenting, Bob!
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely collection
Thanks Jillian
Never had a problem with Jade plants. Easiest ever to propogate and have found them fairly tolerant when I've accidentally neglected them. I have them everywhere inside and out.
@DionneRoxanne , thank you for sending me here!!!! My poor plant is gonna survive! This guy knows his Jades!
Haha I'll try
Everything about your jade plant is karger than life. I will definitely be pruning mine soon.
Jade plants are such lovely plants ! I didn't prune my 2 jade plants I bought 2 years ago and I regret it. This year I can do it ;)
Its never too late with a jade plant!
Great video, I really learned a lot. I wasn't aware that jade plants benefit from yearly pruning. I have one that's the same size as the big one against the wall and want to get it back to a fuller shape. You demonstrated clipping off the new growth, but as I've not pruned it before, should I take off more? Also, I want to replace the old soil with fresh soil, but I'm afraid I'll break off branches when I take it out of the pot its in. How would you go about repotting one of the larger ones you have? Thanks!
Your house plant videos are very helpful and easy to follow. My jade plant has what loos like white fuzz on the leaves. It’s mostly where the leaf and stem meet. Do you happen to know what it is and how to get rid of it. My rubber plant next to it seems to be u effected by it. Is their a way to send an image?
Hey Jennifer.....google mealybugs and she if they look the same
Be grateful. You have a big beautiful jade plant ....
I sure am because it took a long time to grow
Good clear advice at last “ best plant video I’ve watched thank you 🙏
Thanks and I have many more Jade videos on my channel!
Great informational video on Jade plant...I had one years ago...I will find one now thank you. Watching from Colorado USA.
What happened to that jade? Did it die?
@@EverythingPlants yes
can you find small jade plants in succulents? I bought a bowl of them and a couple of the succulents look like they could be small jade cuttings?
Great video, like ur jade, it's amazing💚
Thanks Mar Mar
Thank you for your helpful videos. I learned how to properly prune mine from another video of yours, but I have a question if you have time: We have 2 healthy jade plants (we're in Southern California, btw) that were planted in a front flower bed outside when we bought our house. We had a plumbing issue that required us to dig them up and pot them so they weren't destroyed by the work. The soil that they were planted in is sort of sandy/clay packed dirt. We just used that dirt in the two clay pots that we put them in, and I've watered them when they were dry and it seems to dry out fine on the surface - the plants seem to be thriving. They have grown a LOT in the time they've been in the pots and are very happy looking. Should I repot them with the cactus soil anyway?
I have one that is 36 years old, it’s huge. I have so many Jade plant cuttings from that mother plant and so I try to give away cuttings every time I prune them.
Wow! Id love to see a picture of your jade plant.
One of my fav house plant
Mine too!!!

I have a jade plant with three stems and each one is about 6-7 inches tall. Is it to late to start pruning to give it branches?
I know you spoke about potting them but when do you know when to re-pot them?
I have mine under grow lights. There are a lot of trees in my neighborhood and I don’t get a lot of sun.
That is perfect! I have one underneath a grow light and it does wonderful
Great video. I have a cutting that’s established and 6 inches now. When do you recommend pruning to get a thicker trunk?
Usually about a year to year and a half
@@EverythingPlants I ask because every video I’ve seen show pruning of established thick trunks, not when to start from a cutting Thank you! That’s good to know.
Such an informative video, thank you so much
You are so welcome!
Thank you 😭 my jade has been struggling, I will implement these tips 🫡💚💚
Good luck Destiny
I live Big Island of Hawai'i - they grow very large outdoors here
That would be incredible
im using 50% regular soil and 50% sand , works perfectly and is cheaper
got this advice from my grandpa , hes growing succulents for decades
Sand is key!
I feel terrible decades after my mom gave me her huge jade plant when she moved to Florida. She didn't want it to get damaged and didn't have a good place to put it so I took it home and killed it after a few months. I am growing 3 jade plants now and I'm working hard to make them nice so I can give them to her this year when I visit. They are beautiful plants that I enjoy taking care of and I still worry I'm going to kill these.
Beautiful plants! Makes me feel bad for neglecting my little jade plant. 😞
They like to be neglected haha
Nice and helpful video! LOVE THIS PLANT! THANKS!
My oldest jade plant is about 7 years old. At first I pruned it to little so it got really long arms. Then I got sick of it and pruned it too short I guess. It has only grown little back since then ...
I follow those instructions 5 times and all 5 died on me. I had once a big tree jade and did not had any problems. Is it me I wonder...but I grow other plants well. It nust be the soil. How do I make the composition myself? (we do not have to buy here where I am). Thank you for your advice
