Tom was being blackmailed by the system and Mary was being blackmailed by guilt over Tom. The problem with this story is Mary ended up responsible for Tom's life. Then the system erased all of George's memories of Mary so that the only thing he knew about her was that she left him for another guy. No one had any free will in this story to make their own choices. The system made all the choices so there isn't really much tension or drama to the story. Asides from a bit of regret on the listeners part for "what might have been" the story is pretty flat. Tom got the life he wanted. George got a good life with Iris. Meanwhile Mary ended up a desolate promiscuous alcoholic with a gambling addiction. Why is Mary the only one being punished when objectively she did nothing wrong. She sacrificed her love with George in order to save Tom's life. She put another's life ahead of her own happiness then got punished for it. The system is really the only antagonist in this story.
Mary was being blackmailed??? She "suddenly" grew a heart? TBF I don't blame Tom or George, Mary is the only bad one. What kind of BS is this," I never believed him saying I had to love him or he would die....oh he got cancer it must have been all true??? Nah fam, u can call it blackmail, but what it was, was that Mary didn't want to "feel" bad. Oh no the poor licker whose followed me for 7 years is dying, sure I can pay attention for a month. If she really cared about him as a fellow classmate she should have: 1) Clearly let him know you aren't interested in a relationship ( it sounds like she actually accomplished this) 2) If the person (tom) still doesn't "take the hint" then next should be "vivid examples" such as only allowing Tom's presence when George is around (Reinforce the whole I have a BF thing), help set him up on dates, etc. 3) if the person still doesn't "take the hint" it's honestly gone beyond disrespectful of your own (Mary in this case) thoughts/stance. At this point it would have been very reasonable to yell/speak negatively/etc. to get rid of Tom....heck in IRL I imagine cops would have been called at this point. Secondly, so even if we excuse Mary treatment of George/Tom due to blackmail....WTF was the rest of the interactions with George. Literally everytime she talked (excluding when she learned of George's system) to George it would go like this: A. Mary: George I know I'm at fault/sorry but I need to do X for Tom. B. George responds C. Mary: how could you, u aren't understanding....proceeds to yell/storm out/ threaten... Yea the "blackmailed heroine" 😅😂 sure The reason Mary never went beyond step one is that she enjoyed having 1 chasing whilst she's with another. Tom would have been a jerk had it not been either seduce Mary or die. George's punishment was a good thing for him. Honestly even if you have to "see" Mary in a good light consider this, her mentality is weak enough that she allows/puts herself in "dangerous" positions. Someone like that can you: 1) trust them to be ur significant other? 2) can you trust them to take care of others ( your children, parents, etc. ) Seeing as both of these are define No's, would you even want her as a spouse?
Even after listening to this again she keeps talking about Tom's sacrifice for her and I still don't understand. What was that sacrifice was that she's willing to leave a wedding to be with him? From her stand point honestly it makes no sense. What exactly did he do to get her to just drop everything and leave besides simping? She wouldn't do that without harboring feelings for the dude in the first place.
