I'd like to file a complaint - I never got super powers after passing my test! :P My test was weird. Three of us on the trip had to sit, conditions of the trip got quite stressful, too. So I volunteered to sit first just to get whacked and break the ice. I went up to fail. The first cut was close, then Sensei made me sit again and before I knew it I was out of the way. Training did change after it - I expected more out of myself. It was easier to stop trying to "think" through every moment and just move more often.

Paul, as always, a great message, you always charge with positive energy, thank you!
I also practice Sakki with my wife)
but seriously, this is an important stage in the life of every student of the Bujinkan. I'm glad that I managed to do it in the presence of Hatsumi-sensei, his words - OK. this is the best impression after passing the test.
Now I also learn from my children. This is a very important message, I remember Hatsumi sensei was asked - what should a child be taught? he replied - you should learn from the child yourself. this is true.

I love you Paul! Thank you for being this flood light of example! Everyone who studies Sensei’s art should reflect on this. 🙏🏽

After 5th Dan first felt a lot pressure to be good. Now I can relax more though. Thanks for your nice view on that test.

Hey Paul~sama!! This words brings so many great memories of our interwiev!! I had to admit, to me the most important part of all the vid was the "see the rules as oportunities". Thats a all game changer in the mind, and great tip to be strong but flexible, not only in the body. Maybe i'm talking nonsense, idk. But thank you for realease this! hope we can talk again soon!! 😁🤩

Love it Paul. I didn't care on both times i passed the test (long Story). When you care or think you have something to lose or gain it doesn't work.
Just throw your hands in the air like you just don't care!

Very nice thoughts, my friend. You are right. Mine was passed by just letting go and being quiet when Arnaud swung the sword. No thought. Mushin and a trust in training and connection with the attacker. Nothing really cosmic, just moving correctly to survive. Thank you for the video! - Todd

Hey Paul, as usual you have odd ways of getting points across but without getting too far out there here is what the godan test has done for me. I was a police officer for many years. One night on patrol we got a call of intruders in someone’s garage. Me and my partner responded. As we entered we could hear people walking around on the second floor. So my partner says upstairs let’s go. At that moment, I get a weird “feeling” and single him to wait a moment. I draw my gun and walk around one of the cars parked inside. On the other side of the car was two guys waiting for us. The godan test saved our lives. I have other incidents like this but I won’t get into them. I thank Hatsumi Sensei every day for what he gave me.

Paul, you're telling so true. I' ve been passing my Godan test in 2021, when my mentor invited me to Osnabrück for a seminar with Luke Molitor Daishihan. Luke was also the tester for me. Cause I have trouble with my hip joints, he told my beeing carefully when sitting in seiza und told a story....I don't know, what abour. But at one moment I felt a power from behind, so that I nearly jumped up. This was not the test, he showed a kick when telling his story. Crazy
The test itself was strange too. I had the feeling of a string, starting at my left ear whit somebody gently pulling on it. When the pull stopped , I made myself falling sideways. And that was all....
I've never trained this test in any kind before and today, I know, this was the right way for me

🌸 😂 loved the talk and the ending.
For me, after the Godan I felt more responsibility to train well to carry the torch properly and well when I eventually teach or share with others. I tried to feel more and think a bit less, tho it doesn’t always work haha.

lol, Love the sketch comedy!! Also like how you explained it! Thanks as always for sharing Paul!! :D Ethan was good at making sure you got moved if you didn't move out of the way of something, or recieve it well! I aim to pass that on to my students as well, I was told to not think, go and sit and die well if it is my time. It served me well :) (Also miss my Fam. back in Minnesota, Looking at you Mizu Nagare, and Senjo Dojo's, and you too Rick!)

Your son is brilliant. Like me you have a fine family! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I did my Godan in Barcelona in 2019 with Nagato. My instructor said i hope you fail it. I didn't think I had an ego but obviously i had as i was taken aback. "Failed"on the Sat and passed on the Sunday. My instructor was right....l learned an awful lot from not passing it..

Life long martial artist here. I've herd a few stories about the Godan test and I think it is one of the most interesting experiences that a person can have. I have a question that maybe you can answer. If the point of the Godan test is to perceive the killing intention of the person behind you, why is it important to actually swing the sword? Why not just generate the killing intention and project it toward the test taker? Thanks again for your channel and all you do.

hey Paul long time no see :) when I took the test in 2018 I failed big time for ecxatly the reasons you give here. to conserned with not flincing, looking good and so on. but then 2 days after I just relaxed not worrying about anything and pasted with flying colors :) I actually expirienced the same home in denmark. Dai shihan Hans Lock asked me if I would like to try ( This was before the test ) and the first time, I was nervors and failed but then I just let go and was able to do it like 6 or 7 times in a row. it is a strange thing. Again I hope you and your famely are doing great . sencirly Sonny

The only thing I can describe passing the Godan test was that it was like putting my hand on a hot stove. I had to move.

I don't want to make this about me (I'll save that for Facebook) but Paul's description mirrored my test last October with Noguchi Sensei. I fidgeted, had a couple of false 'guesses' and then decided I had failed, would not embarass myself further and would just sit and wait to be hit. And well, you can guess the rest. Thank you Paul for putting it more eloquently. I also practice the sakki of being caught doing nothing by the missus. I don't think she is fooled though.
