Neat video. Thank you. I just dressed my grinding wheel today using that tool with the metal "stars" on it. I'm not a fan of that because it can't be held steady, i.e. it is only as steady as your hand can hold it and if your wheel is pretty out-of-round it causes your hand to bounce in and out which is obviously not good. So, I need to come up with something like a jig to hold the grinding device stead. Maybe I get a diamond tool like this one. Thank you for this video, John. Well done.

I saw a video here by an experienced grinder instructor. He advocated using the 'T' handle diamond tool to gently remove a tiny depth of the grinding wheel face from each side.... so that the center of the wheel is left and it cuts the piece to be ground down (chisel blade, etc.) by passing the work side to side slowly. Less friction and more precise control of the work piece. The center 1/4 or 1/2 of the wheel face does the work and not the outside 1/3 of both sides of the wheel face.

Just buy a ceramic dressing stick and you can dress the face and the sides of the grinding wheel and in doing so it also balances the wheel, also NEVER, NEVER use shims on a grinding wheel if you want to live.

diamond point dresser is great for tool room grinders, where spindle has super precision bearings and no vibrations, on pedestal grinders a star dresser works better this is the opinion of a retired grinder.

You worried me there! You must NEVER use a bench grinder without the guards in place, especially when setting up a wheel (new or used) I know its a pain putting them on, then taking them off etc, but its more of a pain having bits of grinding stone removed from your body (If you survive the explosion)
Shims are deadly! if you have a `wobble` try turning the wheel on the shaft an inch or two then re-tighten the nut! if that doesn't work take the wheel back to where you got it, and buy a better quality one!

Never, ever, put shim between the grinding wheel and the wheel flange plates. If the wheel is wobbling from left to right, it's because you either have deformed/damaged flanges or a cheap crap grinding wheel...or both. Throw them both away. Don't use a bench grinder without the wheel guard...they're fitted for a very good reason!

I do have a cylindcrical grinder and a tool & cutter grinder (1 ton, no benchtop toy). And I do have a few diamonds, multi tipped diamonds and diamond tiles for dressing. Beside other dressers.
But you could ask anyone who does **serious** grinding. The diamond has to drag.

So what your saying is i need tool rests that are square to the grinder and then the tool to dress it that then has to be held square...and i thought trying to setup my lathe bed was complicated.
    Simple but not

Please be careful with your truing set-up. Diamonds are fragile and can easily be "shocked" and damaged. It would be safer and easier on your diamond if you pointed it "down hill" about 15 degrees below the wheels centre line.

Looks like Geiger doesn't know how wheels have to be dressed! The dresser has to point downwards, not upwards as shown. It would be right, if the wheel would rotate CCW.
    That thing is unsafe crap.

You used your wheel guard as a tool rest, and didn't foresee it being pulled into the grinding disc?
I appreciate the video, and including your mistake, but, you should have blamed that one on an "apprentice" you had to fire.

As a qualified stone installer why are you fanning about like this. Just buy the Huntington stone dresser.
