I have experienced to see such an amazing bridge first in the year 1993 while travelling to Rameswaram and Madurai and this video once again refreshed my memory...
Hand cranked!?? And the track ends fit perfectly together at the end. The Pamban Bridge is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Thank you for the video.
Being an offshore structure design engineer I have the following suggestions for better performance and long service life of bridge: 1.This bridge is situated in sea & subjected to marine environment which is saline and moist and prone to corrosion. So protective coating/painting requires to be done periodically to prevent corrosion as per ISO:12944 & NACE guidelines and to increase the service life of bridge. 2.Also bridge is subject to fatigue due to action of waves and wind . Bridge needs to be checked periodically for development of cracks in steel girder of the bridge to prevent the failure due to fatigue. Bridge needs to designed for Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) due wind and fatigue thereof. 3.The pins of bridge are also subjected to rolling action due to frequently opening and closing & horizontal movement of bridge. So Self self lubricating/PTFE bearing shall be used for end movements of bridge. 4. For Bolted connection ,the bolts shall be covered with anti rust grease cap to avoid crevice corrosion. Alternatively SS 314 nut bolts shall be used in stead of steel nut bolts. 5.Steel material used for bridge shall be fully killed and tested for impact strength. I hope if we take care of bridge, bridge will take care of us.
Lol you actually think the Indian government give a shit ? If they did they would have upgrades it to automatic opening and closing instead of hand cranking which was the method used in the 1950s . No developed country in the world has humans hand cranking a damn bridge
@@benjaminpres9381 they don't even have a walkie talkie to communicate and you talking about automatic? My man is out there with a megaphone kinda thing to shout it out.😂
The Pamban Rail bridge is opening manually to facilitate the moment of ships and boats, as the rails are set right for the movement of trains. The process appeared to be so tedious and time consuming. An engineering marvel indeed.
Engineering marvel from British...thank British for igniting and opening our eyes and giving modern education and diverting us from andh viswas filled in our mind by our erstwhile rulers..
Thanks to the British for such a marvellous engineering feat. Tamils are proud of the British engineers for providing us pykara dam, madras port, periyar project, etc
Fun fact The Bridge is constructed in 1914 during British rule By German Engineer Scherzer. The new bride going to be constructed by Indian government is going to be even better, and automatic. 👍🫰
VG & RELEVANT VLIG. PAMBAN BRIDGE IS VERY ICONIC PLACE IN THE WORLD. TAMIL NADU HAS THE WORLD BEST NATURAL BEAUTIFUL PLACES WHERE HILLS AND BEACHES ARE FEW HOURS DRIVING DISTANCE 🚗
The bridge was damaged during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and required repair work.[11] Strengthening work was carried out on the bridge under the supervision of E. Sreedharan
The manual working of lifting up and lowering down of this bridge is so painful. They can use some motors and hydraulic machines instead of manual hard work It is the time to think about of operating it with the electricity and motors
