  • Johns Hopkins Medicine is under fire after an internal email to employees accused straight white Christian men of having unearned “privilege.”
The memo, a newsletter the school’s Chief Diversity Officer Sherita Golden, listed privilege as the “Diversity Word of the Month.”
“Privilege is a set of unearned benefits given to people who are in a specific social group,” she wrote. “Privilege operates on personal, interpersonal, cultural and institutional levels and it provides advantages and favors to members of dominant groups at the expense of members of other groups.”
A definition of the term included listed several demographics that possess privilege.

Ironically the black males interviewed would be considered privileged because they are males, able bodied and they speak English and if they are cis gendered that would be an additional privilege.

As one of the so called “privileged” members of society, I will never seek healthcare at John’s Hopkins. I’m concerned that I may be intentionally harmed by staff there because of my perceived “privilege.” No kidding. Thank you for letting me know how racist the John’s Hopkins staff really are.

As a black woman , I apparently hit 9 out of ten on this list. Coming up from poverty and NOT born into it. I guess im privileged. I say 9 because I'm so confused by my own community. Clearly I know I am black. But because I dont believe in racist ideology, my home culture is different from what is promoted, I speak proper, and married outside my race, among other things then according to my community I am not black. Their words not mine. If I then try to use their own ideas about me not being black against them, then something is wrong with me and I am delusional and think I'm white. So, according to this list I would hit 9/10 depending their mood for the day.

@@mm-dl8uj dumb? Which part is dumb? The fact that I'm doing life better than them by looking at the older generation of black people from the 1800s til the late 80s and see our success as a community and why the majority have been middle class ( which is why shows like Cosby and family matters were created and successful because it actually represented the black community) and not follow the small sub culture of the small fraction of the 8 million poor/impoverished black families out of the total of 41 million black people? And blame some invisible boogeyman for my own failures and short comings and instead take responsibility for my own choices and actions? Me not so smart (according to you) but me thinks and sees 8 is less that 41.
Yeah, the smart thing to do is not follow the advice or choices as a group of people who make bad decisions, who are negligent parents, don't read, failed in school , among others things to re write history that they didn't read and lecture me on it when I actually paid attention to the older successful generation and in school.

Privilege; definition; go to school, pay attention, study do homework instead of drugs to get good grades. work hard to pay for schooling to get better jobs. get jobs more than one at a time, work your life away instead of being around your family all the time so you can afford nice things.
Then be condemned by people that have gotten everything that they have for free but complain because they don’t have what you have because the Government didn’t give them a boat.

This whole philosophy of privilege... they don't mention what exact privilages they actually have and why they have those privileges (is it because they made good decisions in life and not bad ones?). Is it a matter of earning privilege through making the right decisions? And those right decisions are part of a life style which, in part, is what Christianity is.

Why should any "privileged" person put in any effort? There is no point. You probably won't benefit and if you are rewarded for hard work it won't be recognized as anything other than privilege.
Those in the so-called "underprivileged" category are often insulted by the implication that they are inferior "but don't worry we will give you a break" because you're underprivileged.
I work with a diverse group of people and I can't think of any that would welcome this.

Being in the majority does not give you privilege. How did this ever take hold and gain support? It’s a logical fallacy.
Privilege exists in individual circumstances and situations. It does not exist as a whole for people just because they belong to that demographic.
Where is there any evidence that being white grants you immunity from discrimination? Stats on paper claiming that white people do better pre capita is not proof of discrimination.
And even if white privileged exists, how relavent is it? How many times in your life are you actually in a position where another human being has any power over you. A job interview? Police interaction? Judge sentencing you?
That’s it. The theoretical idea of a white guy insulting a black guy is not white privilege. White privielege may exist but it almost never happens bcz it requires a perfect storm of circumstances and one of the few times in life someone else actually had the power to decide your fate.
