Whatever the reply to the Alapin, you need to keep in mind that White can play 1. e4, 2. Nf3 and only then play 3. c3, so Black's response to the Alapin should fit in with their 2nd move.

Do the variation shown in the video work against that? Or do I need to know anything else?

@@Ateafe It depends on what you play after 1.e4 and 2.Nf3. I play the e6 Sicilian so I always play Nf6 against the Alapin's c3 move and it usually transposes to same variations even if white does a different move order.

does anyone know how to respond if they try to kick your knight off d5 with Bc4 instead of pawn c4?

Thanks for the review. may I ask....I'm about 1450 (USCF) I've done about 3400 tactics exercises in the last 18 months, setting up my board on each one + playing through the one's I got wrong no less than 4 times. This has helped, but I'm getting burned out on tactics. I'm considering switching over to 1. Studying endgames for a few months, or 2. Playing through GM games that use openings I prefer. Which would be a better choice? 😇

Nice, the only problem I was looking how to play Alapin from the white side :)

The Alapin is an opening started from the white side. Tons of youtube videos on it.

Today I learned how to say Alapin

I used to always be annoyed seeing Anti-Sicilians on the board, but eventually found that I often just got a game where I could outplay my opponents positionally. It ended up being the sharp Open Sicilians (that I ironically wanted on the board) that made me drop the Sicilian.

      What sicilian did you play

I tried that yesterday. I played against a 1500 player OTB that opened with the Alapin against me. He fired off 30 straight engine moves from move one. I eventually lost due to time pressure. For reference, I also played 29 straight engine moves from move one and finally blundered on move 30. It seems people who play the Alapin are booked up to the gills when 1500 players can play in this manner. Best to hit them with more obscure lines they can't play from memory in rapid-fire fashion. I saw another video that suggest ...g6 early on against the Alapin. Not sure yet if I'm going to use it as I'm still researching.

It's insane when you realize that the 'favorite' Sicilian you want to play can never be reached if opponents detour with anti-sicilians. Giri's najdorf is useless without learning this first.

I prefer to play Alapin as white. 😎 Nice video, though.

Yes, and no doubt only in blitz, surely.
