    When I lived in New York in the 80's, I never saw such weird, cramped layouts like these. The greed of these landlords is insane! The closets are a joke in some of these places. All of the charm of these old buildings has disappeared with these ugly fake walls to make 'bedrooms'. I enjoyed when places were original, but I guess it's all about money now. I love watching all your videos.

      I consider myself lucky to be living in a nice sized normal 1brm apartment in the Boyle Heights district of L.A. VERY lucky, with the exploding homeless population. I haven't seen landlords carve up apartments like this. Maybe strict building codes keep that from happening. Slum lords and roaches are everywhere, and rents have skyrocketed in and around the city. The big promise and money to house the houseless doesn't seem to be in use. The plan is to herd people into shared apartments, or individual storage sheds. Wow. Such an improvement. I'm on Section 8 housing and I live in fear that it will be abolished by some capricious administration, and find myself put in a shack to save money. Greedy landlords and developers are pricing almost everyone out of the housing market.

    The outdoor space in the first apartment is a heck no for me. I've seen my neighbors throw out garbage, sanitary napkins, clothes out their windows in my building and feel so bad for the janitors who have to pick all of that up. Bought a bunch of old buildings, took away all their character and charm, and chopped them up to barely livable spaces like it's NYC...thing is, it's Chicago. My stepfather was a Super back in the 50's in New York. Our building had one kitchen at the end of each floor which had about 5 very tiny apartments per floor. Families would take turns cooking. My kid brother and I would sneak in each floor from the fire escape and a grab an item from the cooking stove. By the time we reached the roof we had a full course meal. Apartments then consisted of two small rooms regardless of the family size.

The second one had windows in the bedroom where you want darkness to sleep, and the living room was like a tomb, no light except for ceiling lights. The narrow closets will work, because after you pay these rents, you really don't have much left over for stuff like clothing and food. That's what the pregentrification ghettos were for. That's why poor people lived there. Today, most 2-bedroom "inner-city" apartments are around $800-$900/month. That's because mostly the only people living there can't afford anywhere else. But, as soon as whites move in those neighborhoods in any large numbers, those rents will be increased to $1500 to $2500. Then there will be more homeless than ever.

    I know I'm always complaining but I don't think anyone considers the massive change a person moving from one state to another has to go through...like if a person wants to move to NY for business or to be near family or just to experience NY in an attempt to figure out what hype is about NY. Living in California for 61 years (all my life), I'm used to larger spaces, trees, the ocean, open sky, bright surroundings. It would be extremely difficult to go from this to living in a painfully cramped, dark, dank space for 5-6x the money. Someone has to "pump the perks" with these NY apartments. I don't think it's done enough. All I ever see of the city are food places, coffee shops and dollar stores. Where is all the fun and excitement that NY is supposed to be about? All I hear is hype but see nothing but dirty, cold, wet, crowded streets and apartments that look like they were either designed by Dracula or the Lilliputians with Bill Gates rent. I have to hand it to you, Cash...you're hawking apartments that seem to be only for people who get off on punishing themselves. You obviously thrive on a challenge! But to be fair, most of these awful, supposed living spaces are down town. When you go further out, you find some really cute, enticing units. But I can't get into the hype when I don't even know what the hype is. I didn't like either of these units but I still like being a lookie-loo and I still like laughing at your sharp wit. And I'll continue to watch for those times when you find a more spacious apartment on one of those nice, tree lined streets away from the heart of the city. Down town San Francisco doesn't look any better than Manhattan. In fact, I think it's worse. But take us outside the jungle a little more often, please?

    • @GaelinW
      @GaelinW 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be fair, Cash takes us where he has access. It's not like he can decide, let's to X part of the city and see some apartments when a leasing agent from that part of the city hasn't reached out to him.
      Also, he seems to be going to these places first thing in the morning. "Fun" places aren't open yet though he does point them out. The plethora of restaurants and bars of all types is what the people moving NY would consider exciting. Certainly, there's also things like Broadway, but that's not where the apartments would be. The people willing to living in these dark, cramped places aren't planning to stay in them all day - unless mandated to. 😳

    • @fafalina56
      @fafalina56 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I did the opposite - after a lifetime (59+ years) of living in metro NY, I moved out to Ohio. Have 2x the space for 1/2 the cost. But - the hype for living in metro NY isn't aimed to us old(er) folks - it's aimed to young folks. My teens through 40s enjoyed everything NYC could offer, from all those food places (you can find cuisine from every country and culture somewhere in the city) shopping from bespoke clothing stores, to wholesalers (ah, memories of Delancey St) nightlife of everything and anything, from clubs that don't even open up until midnight, to knowing where the after-hour clubs are, to live music venues, nightclub catering to *any* type of interests. It isn't hyperbole to say NYC is the city that never sleeps. It's made for people who think walking 10 blocks is nothing, a fifth floor walk-up wouldn't kill their knees, and taking a bus, a transfer to another bus, and then a subway, then walk to their job is no big deal. Get older, it becomes a drag. Someone in their 60s unless thy have scads of money to live in one of the posh large door-manned condos/coops wouldn't want to have to deal with what a 20 year thinks is nothing.

    • @panamasrose
      @panamasrose 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Cash has said that if someone is moving to New York it should be for a job or school. Native New Yorkers would never live in any of these. Covid has knocked the wind out of fun things to do in New York, but it does seem to be coming back. Also, it's not all about Manhattan. The outer boroughs have a ton to offer. Personally, I'd wish he'd do more in Queens. He once did a tour of a Forest Hills, Queens apartment. He mentioned the wide variety of restaurants and failed to mention the amazing concert venue, Forest Hills Stadium, just a few blocks away.

The second apartment is across the street from the massive Google building---formerly The Port Authority Inland Pier. It is near the West Village and south of Chelsea. Outer borough apartments might be bigger and cheaper but they are outer borough. And, the kitchens are nice: I always ate out.

One might be concerned about potential flooding and resulting mildew. The second place is nicer, albeit lacking in porch space. Both have abundant space to work with. Both need kitchen counter space.

    Thank you for your tour of these apartments. They both look good but I have lived I a basement years ago. I like the second apartment better with that small and cute kitchen. Wow, the washer/dryer are a must! I would make one if the front bedrooms into a living room area. And have a little more medium size table with chairs there next to the kitchen items. The medicine cabinets are winners as well.

    The more I look at nyc places, the more I feel like I’m checking out relatively nice tiny homes that shamelessly steal your money bc it’s nyc. However compared to an era before gentrification, the quality was never ever like this. I’d absolutely take the first one in a second tho if I didn’t feel like in some cities, I’d pay that in mortgage for a mansion🙃

    I really LOVED the first basement apartment! All those huge closets and that back yard. Now I don’t know what living in New York is like and I’ve said before how much I love these quirky basement homes - but I’ve been told in the comments that rats and flooding are a real issue …

      I'm in South Carolina and I've talked with several people that have moved from up north down here, that are extremely happy and impressed with the size of a dang on near mansion and yard space they can get for the money they're paying for something way more cramped up north. Hey, it's New York tho, no other place like it 🏙️

      The sad thing is when folks from high priced cities like this move to lower priced cities, they are ok with paying more for some housing. So the housing prices slowly creep up. It was happening slowly over the last 10 years. In the last 2 though, it's hitting everywhere. My current apartment is marketed for $300 more per month that I currently pay.

    I love these videos bc I get to peek into how others live in places I've never been. I'm guessing there must be a worthwhile trade off for those wanting to live in these apartments versus more spacious living areas. Is it the proximity to certain attractions? Is it bc those residents don't spend much time at home, so they don't require much space? A one foot wide door for a closet seems kind of...crazy??

    The gas clouds coming out of the street is a remnant of when there was a central steam heating system in New York. There's still buildings that use it, so it still has to stay in operation, but a lot of the infrastructure is out of date and behaves weirdly so you get those odd steam chimneys in the middle of the streets
    In theory, it's just steam, and therefore relatively safe to breathe.

    Clearly, there is only one company that is doing bathroom renovations in NYC, and everyone uses them. I see the exact same tile in every bathroom that you have shown. Kind of ridiculous that everyone is paying for the exact same bathroom. Can you imagine moving from one apartment to another only to find out that you have the exact same bathroom in your new place? Where is the individuality and creative expression these days?
