Why a Small Florida Surf Town Became "The Shark Bite Capital of the World"

  • The far northeastern tip of the small Florida surf town of New Smyrna Beach is where surfers from these parts and around the world come to witness some of the most consistent waves.
    It just so happens that this popular surfing destination also draws another population -- perhaps by the hundreds -- but this one from offshore. Sharks. This stretch of the Atlantic coastline has, for decades, drawn the most shark bites in the world. Find out why.

    Was in a beach in northern Florida once, and my wife wanted to swim kind of far from the shore and I told her ....hell no, these waters are full of sharks, she proceeded to make fun of me. The next day, just one beach up, someone had his entire calf ripped off by a shark.....she apologized later when she saw the pictures of the guy's leg.

      Swam in this water for years as a kid... even in the inlet waters around stingrays. We knew there were sharks but that most bites weren't fatal. It was explained to the locals that it was a fish/shark nursery and not to worry. It wasn't until I moved to Alaska that I heard about the "shark bite capital of the world" town in Florida and I when I opened the news article... I'll be darned. It was my hometown LOL.

      The term "over-fishing" is the biggest BS going around. Idiots decided to over-protect sharks (who are nothing more than scavengers) and that is why you have more shark attacks. Furthermore, with the advent of the internet, you now hear about a shark bite immediately when before you almost never heard about it before because it tended to be just another local issue. By the way, if you disagree, please provide a list of "their usual prey" -- and it can't just be all fish because then that's not a predator-prey relationship.

    My friend has been bitten 2 X. In the foot, + once in the hand while surfing NSB. I've surfed here since the 60's + see them often but have been blessed with no attacks so far. Many non-locals think - well I'm ok as long as I am not at the inlet. Not true. From Bethune to Sunglow Pier is all pretty much in the shark zone from what I know. Watch surf fishers pull them in at Flagler Ave. You never see the ones that bite you till it's too late. One friend's son has been bitten bt a shark, and a few years later struck by lightening. Inlets are where dead animals sometimes end up and then wash out into the ocean so it's a good food source for sharks. Plus the waters might be more murky due to sit especially after a rain.

    • @rottweilerfun9520
      @rottweilerfun9520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There aren't that many dead animals floating around. The water flowing from the inlets into the ocean contain lots of smaller fish , shrimp , etc that live in the estuaries while they are young , add those to the ones that the current pushes out and that's a recipe for bigger fish. That's why inlets are great places to fish , the water there is also more oxygenated so that turbo charges the fishes metabolisms.

      The idea has been explored but it is too inconvenient and impractical not to even mention the environmental risks. There are better deterants and shark attacks are statistically very improbable but get the most media attention because media loves fear mongering. I've surfed in great whites waters my whole life, I've never seen one (probs a bunch have seen me ngl) and I can count more times I was nearly ended by another surfer or a big wave. Human beings just do things backwards when it comes to logic... Someone gets bit by a shark, people cry "let's kill sharks" but someone wipes out in a big wave and is never seen again, no one cries out "Lets make waves smaller".... honestly, the biggest hazard out there are other human beings and their boards.

      @@franram7426The thing is that the stereotype is actually more true people who take your position on this particular topic. It's the popular belief. You understand that right? Sharks are generally harmless and when they do attack and they do a predation it's because they are mistaken the person for a seal one of their common prey. It's when you examine. That is when you start to understand that it can't possibly be true.
      The first thing is the fact that you don't smell like a seal. Sharks do have more amazing eyesight than we do. And not only do you not look like a seal, but you definitely do not smell one and smell is one of their primary senses even before eyesight.
      The other reason that this can't possibly be true is the amount of attacks that we see that don't actually involve a surfboard.
      Lastly, if their mistaken us for seal then creatures that look and act way more like seal and are in environments where sharks are also should be attacked with more frequency even though they are not on the sharks menu. That's doesn't happen.

Get a frequency device that detours sharks away from the board (theres a design that has been proven to irritate sharks receptors and drives them away from the frequency around the board) and 3. @@bassglaze3275 well beliefs aside all we know for sure, is that it ends. I totally agree with avoiding risky areas and general safe practices when surfing lien avoid surfing completely alone. Although, I still do it (depends on the place) due to certain benefits such as the fact it’s peaceful and quiet but in doing so, I accept should I have a problem of any kind then unlikely that anyone can help me. Thing is shark attacks are rare, like extremely rare… however due to the gruesome nature of it, the media will jump on any they can get which can make it seem like a common occurrence and yet you have far more chances of dying or being permanently disabled by the car you hop into every day without a thought. So end of the day, if you love surfing or any other ocean activity, go out have fun but respect it and keep it clean for all to enjoy… should one day a shark take a liking to you, be happy you survived because a lot of other animals weren’t as lucky as you.

    Yeap, mistaken identity can account for some, however there are attacks by sharks where mistaken identity is certainly not the case, infact some are very very intentional and there has been some pretty crazy stories out there. Unfortunately many end in great tragedy.

    • @dreammaker9642
      @dreammaker9642 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mistaken identity is the case where really it wasn't your fault. Other cases (I'll even include longimanus) was you being at the wrong spot at the wrong time. For example, I once saw a diver nearly get his head ripped up by a great white while he was diving near a carcasses. We now know great whites can get very territorial especially around carcasses and should it consider you a threat or challenger then you are about to get it. Great whites tho have many ways to communicate to you that you are not welcome and will usually only come after you should you not get the memo.

    It's one thing for a shark to mistake a human as a meal. It's another thing when we have people that think it's fun to try to grab them out of the water as they come closer to shore to eat as well as onshore fishing right next to swimmers. Makes perfect sense. Grew up at the beach and you get Resepect when you give respect. It's THEIR home not ours. California does NOT have any documented proof of a great white shark swimming close to shore to attack a person wading in the water, wearing a bathing suit. It doesn't happen. The only way you will get attacked is by looking like a seal. Surfers, or anyone on a board, resembling a seal or diving or swimming in a full body wetsuit and hood, could get you killed, but that's it. Our coastal beaches in California arent anything like Florida's waters. You are risking your life, big time, swimming off Florida.
      Off Florida, N. Carolina S. Carolina, beach goers could be standing in just 4 feet of water and get attacked, by bull sharks who will attack a human for no reason at all. And tiger sharks who will attack if you are farther out swimming. California waters doesn't have bull sharks or tiger sharks.. so therefore we don't have any of those shark attacks on anyone just in the water.
      Florida this year 58% of the world shark attacks. 2019 64% of the world shark attacks. California shark attacks are very very rare and 95% of the time, there is a reason behind why it happened..

      @@rottweilerfun9520 Also, the ISAF considers a shark incident, if the shark just touched a person's surfboard, kayak or paddleboard as an attack. Ya you hear about the fatalities of the great white shark. Because one bite, a mistake in identity, is usually fatal for us humans. You weren't that seal, that the great white sure hoped you were.
