I have a real soft spot for Keanu I really do, but he does really find himself in some stupid movies. If someone says he's crap (like I used to) show them all the Bill and Ted films and The Matrix films first. He's worthy of being liked!
Keanu Reeves is likeable, though, and he has acquired some heft, which helps. His problem might be boiled down to integrity. He's a too cautious performer. So cautious that at times he's like a tabula rasa with a nose: whatever you think his character might be it probably is.
Keanu CAN act, the emotionless Klaatu is SUPPOSED to be played like that! Are we supposed to think he's gonna break out in laughter any moment or burst out in tears? No, he's from another planet, you can't possibly know whether they have emotions like ours, I think Keanu did a pretty good job at this
There's a part of the original, which no one would dare put in a remake. It's a scene where his landlady trusts him, a complete stranger, with his son and the two of them go out and take a turn around Washington and no-one thinks anything is wrong with this. These days, if you did that, you'd have to put in the scenes where someone comes up and accuses Klaatu of being a child molester who's kidnapped the boy for "disgusting purposes". Or someone calls the cops for the same reason.
@randomdave30 Ocean's Eleven, Cape Fear, The Fly, The Thing, Scarface, and Little Shop of Horrors to name a few. Of course a lot of the time it comes down to personal preference.
Im see'n it tomorrow nite..in IMAX...with my other 1/2,my brother/his wife and my older sister...looking forward to a good movie and a nite out with family...I've seen the original a few times in my 48yrs - and I like Keanu and look forward to the use of CGI...so I agree with your assessment.
The director of this appalling remake was quoted as saying "we could have remade it scene for scene and shot for shot and it still wouldn't have been as good as the original" Well, maybe not, but it would have a hell of a lot better than the turgid mess they ended up with. You would have thought Hollywood had learned it's lesson with the remake of War of the Worlds....
@Deavi783 Starman? When I read your post I experienced this mental thwack of deja vu and had to stop an think for a minute. Haven't seen that movie since I was a wee nipper. Gaahhh!! It's all coming back...
Sounds perfectly awful. Interesting (updated) premise though. Although it's not very well done, I'd actually say Kleatnu is trying not to sound like Mr Spock but like Carl Sagan! (who, hilariously enough, sounds a lot like Agent Smith from The Matrix)
Lacking the will to change doesn't even make sense to my human mind. That's the very essence of life - growth, forward movement. You can't function as a live being if you lack the ability to change. At some point or another, it will happen. Much like respiration - if you can't, you die. Immediately.
Hows an alien supposed to act?!, i'd imagine a being far more intelligent than us would act more fluid and expressively, rather than a souless machine, but then again may be he's an alien machine?
Has there ever been a remake that's better than the original? Excluding movies that have maybe been inspired by other movies e.g. The Seven Samurai / The Magificent Seven, has there ever been such a thing?
I think it's just conformism labelling Keanu Reeves a bad actor, he's a lot better than Christian Bale for example who is the perfect example of a talking wardrobe. Look at his performance in Bill and Ted and compare it to Devil's Advocate or The Matrix, those characters are miles apart.
I've not seen this movie, and from the reviews I've seen I likely won't, but if a complete fool like Kermode doesn't like it then I might have judged this too harshly. One thing I do know - having a critic poke fun at the name of the male lead for five minutes is not what I would construe to be an "absolutely brilliant" movie analysis. It is more what I'd expect from this dope.
i saw the original as a kid, and i'm impressed until today...but this new version? it's the same with all the other remakes they have done over the years! Mostly Shit!
Just for Mark's information the title of this movie refers to the end when in order to save earth klaatu sends us all back to the stone age, technologically speaking, therefore the earth stood still. Still a crap movie by the way.
Typical Reviewer who is more wrapped up in himself! I would love to see Reviewers reviewing each other!! His soul review is focussed on Keanu Reeves and thats it. Some will like this movie and some wont, its just that type of movie.
The film takes everything that was good about the culty original & this remake is made into A forgettable, sleazy & lifeless remake. (18%) (1/5 stars) (negative)
@BigBoss7777777 Keanu is a really bad actor. Comparing him to Christian Bale is like comparing apples to oranges. The fact that Keanu has had such a longevity in his career is beyond me. The Matrix was Keanu's only decent performance.
3/10 for this film. Dont be sidetracked by Keanu Reeves non acting ability. He couldnt play a corpse cos he's too emotionless!! The Film itself has a great message LOST in bad pointless scenes that go nowhere. The chinese chat?, John Cleese? Will Smiths annoying son had the only emotion in the movie. the planet seemed unconcerned with a 200 foot Iron man wondering around NY. NO NO NO! No Church men, No presidents, just Cathy Bates? "If Keanu dies , acting will continue" remember that!
i wouldn't belive it, but keanu is really a bad actor. he has always the same "look" (like ben stiller in zoolander). if i recall all the films i've seen with him, he acts always the same. there is rarely an expression on his face / his body. why didn't i notice this before? well... i think i was distracted from the movies itself! e.g. nice girls (mostly the better actors beside keanu), an artillery of effects, an incredible set, etc. ..but if you concentrate directly on keanu, you will know!
Based on how silly this guy looks, I though this so called review would also be equally as much of a joke, I was right. This is the type of guy that walks out the door during covid19 and licks the door handles to look smart...
The day my face stood still
Agreed, I could stand Keanu, but the tipping point for me was Jaden Smith.
Hated that kid
Lol
Mark's reactions from 2:12 to 3:10 are priceless.
It's so bizarre to see all these comments from before the keanussance.
Keanu Reeves should have played Gort.
I have a real soft spot for Keanu I really do, but he does really find himself in some stupid movies. If someone says he's crap (like I used to) show them all the Bill and Ted films and The Matrix films first. He's worthy of being liked!
a talking wardrobe is the perfect description of Keanu acting
Keanu is obviously a surfer pretending to be a space alien, lol
Keanuunununnunu
Neil from the Young Ones, I'm proud I got that one as a Non-Brit

It should have been called "The Day The Earth Watched Paint Dry".
Outstandingly funny.

"wait! ok man, things have changed!"
no a patch on the 1951 version
And “the day my face stood still” line is where?
00:24 Mark cracks up at Keanu’s Vulcan delivery
Is there any way to watch the broadcast visually? they keep saying about watching on the podcast but i cant work out how.
If you'd said that back in 1995, everyone would've laughed. Now, you're quite right.

I liked War of the Worlds, i can't remember why, but i think i did

My question is "If not Keanu, who ?" My suggestion would be the comedian Steven Wright

Starman is everything this film wanted to be but failed. John Cleese being in this movie is probably the worst casting decision ever.
Keananananunu?
THE FUNNIEST LINE IN THE MOVIE WAS: WHO SAYS ITS YOUR PLANET !
Possibly the worst film I ever saw in the cinema
James Robertson You are correct sir
I can't say the same for the original. Watch it and note how they have destroyed a great movie.
James i was so bored in the Cinema i walked out of the cinema
IT WAS PAINFUL TO WATCH EVEN HALF OF THIS AWFUL MOVIE!!!
kermode looks like val kilmer
Sounds exactly the same as his performance in Much Ado About Nothing. And that performance stank!
stavaas,if he couldn't act no one would want to see his movies, i think he is great and always have done.
i didnt think it was really it was that good. it was basically the inconvenient truth with a badass robot and a couple of aliens.
christopher reeve would have been more life-like than keanu reeves
Shelley Duvall is the best thing in The Shining!
@eveningtsar Yes. Hayden Christensen.
i liked it too.
that could be it
i think my favourite movie with keanu is "bill & ted"...unfortunately he never leaved this acting level.

@randomdave30 yes, the thing.
The red
Keannunu Juno...😄
It's pronounced 'NEE-MOY', not 'NIM-OY'.

Wrong. Watch A Scanner Darkly.
You mean the only movie in which he's animated?

Strangely the thruth comes out.
@BigBoss7777777 nah come on Patrick Bateman, American Psycho
woah
Awful film. Awful.
The remake of the film was green environmental nonsense - a disastrous failure.
the worst movie i've seen so far this year is you dont mess with the zohan. that was the ultimate low for adam sandler
I've not seen this movie, and from the reviews I've seen I likely won't, but if a complete fool like Kermode doesn't like it then I might have judged this too harshly.

TDTESS is going to be become a classic much like the first one did. Its a wonderful message within a wonderful movie.
This comment has aged like milk.
probably why we're also seeing talentless people like orlando bloom and ben afleck appearing in leading roles for big otherwise respectable movies
Just for Mark's information the title of this movie refers to the end when in order to save earth klaatu sends us all back to the stone age, technologically speaking, therefore the earth stood still.
Still a crap movie by the way.
Keanu "The Plank" Reeves strikes again
Kermode is the spitting image of Bryan Singer.
god i got bored of this guy jabbering after about a minute....someone clearly likes the sound of his own voice and has far too much to say for himself
haha :P he's always bad, especially when he really attempts to 'act'. i can't believe how shit he is in dracula most of all...
TobyB he was terrible in that! That English accent 😂
to Blink182Omar, Keanu Reeves is bad in every movie he's ever been in. Fact

infantile... the way you make fun of non-Anglo names.
He does that to everyone. "Judd Apapapatotoww," etc.
McGEEEEEEEE
I think it's infantile that someone would ever want to have fun. None of us should ever have fun. Stop the fun. Please, everyone, stop the fun.
He makes fun of everyone's name. Meryl Streep is Muriel Strepsyl, Orlando Bloom is Orloondo Bland, Gerard Butler is Shutup Buttwad... I could go on.
My favorite is "Shutup Buttwad" - because it so perfectly fits that aura of thuggishness Butler has no matter what he's playing.
quite possibly the worst remake ever made.
