    If I remember correctly, it was Clark Gable who told both the Academy and the venue that he wouldn't attend, if Hattie were not given the same considerations as the other actors.

      If that is true then that is dope on his part. Given that period and how big name he was as an actor.

    • @DD-rp2qr
      @DD-rp2qr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But she wasn’t given the same consideration. As I understand it from multiple sources, Clark Gable wasn’t there as he knew in advance that he was not his category’s winner. The truth may be speculative. More importantly the indignity of Ms McDaniel (the Oscar winner) sitting away from the Gone with the Wind leads at a small table near the back wall and not being in any group pictures with the other winners is usually ignored. Black people complained back then. So please show the movie unedited (and other ugly reminders so we strive to do better) Remember the hypocrisy: the Oscar ceremony and its venue in 20th century California promoted the same dehumanizing values that were portrayed in the Gone With The Wind story.

    The most important part of this story for me is that they intend to bring it back. It is culturally important for us to understand how people viewed the world in the past, even when those views are biggoted. I can't tell if all these removals are knee jerk reactions by networks to preserve ratings or whether they are responding to genuine public pressure. Either way it needs to be done with careful consideration on a show by show basis, not a one size fits all policy.

    • @jjlnguess7354
      @jjlnguess7354 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right. But you do know that Hollywood are masters at exaggerating and over dramatizing culture in any point of history, right? So any “cultural” movie that Hollywood puts out is hardly precision accurate. Hollywood loves to magnify the most controversial among us, at times to be unrealistic. So yeah, there was racism during the filming of “Gone With The Wind”, but we can’t sit here and claim it’s 100% accurate. As if “Gone With The Wind” is the basis for all of Southern history and race relations. I’m not really addressing you in this, because you most certainly know this. But the people who are calling for the removal of all our history in America, need this explanation.

      Donna Cianciosi the same way it sanitized just about every aspect of life. Slavery was awful but even back then Filming slavery as it was in that time would have sickened those watching even more. Which it should have. Same with the way people are killed on screen. Completely different.... film has to tone down a lot to make it easier on mass audiences watching. Niche films are where you get closer to realism.

      @@donna25871 I don't think it sanatized it. It tells a story and shows human relationships in a particular context. We are used to see movies with rebellious slaves (black or white by the way) and it's great, but in real life I can also imagine that not every masters hated their slaves and not every slave hated their masters too. It's the context that was awful, the relationships between human beings are more complex than the overal context and I think cinema should show every sides of a story. The maternal love of Mammy for her master's daughter is touching in this movie, precisely because of the context and what she has to endure.

      @@les4767 Your attitude is a big part of the problem. Without activism women would not be allowed to vote and without activism parts of the US would still be segregated.
      But every time people try to change the world through activism, activism is defined by some as ‘mob rule’.
      Two of the highest rated US movies of all time are racist. It is time to address that. Not by removing those movies permanently, but my making a thoughtful introduction that explains the context in which those movies were made.
      A simple disclaimer is pointless or perhaps even worse than no disclaimer at all.

    Mexico is they wanted to be a slave state and Mexico had abolished slavery some 10 year before.

    Happy Birthday Hattie McDaniel. This was woman was not only a pioneer for all African-American performers but she showed way more dignity and class during those times than her own country showed her. Gone With The Wind was almost 75 years after the end of the Civil War and yet Hattie McDaniel was not allowed to attend the premiere of the movie in Atlanta because the theater didn't allow Black people to enter. Clark Gable threatened to not attend if McDaniel wasn't allowed to but she insisted he go, showing great class in the face of racism. The Oscars were forced to let her in but in the end treated her like a second class citizen not allowing her to sit with her White colleagues.
    I'm sure most of the outrage today will be reserved for the "Woke" agenda getting this movie temporarily pulled with none being left over why it is and the long history behind its story. Well I have none left for that petty shit. I don't care about Gone With The Wind, never did never will. What actually happened in the 40s and the time of the Civil War that they were depicting is far more important

    Actually, this really sounds more like reverse psychology. I mean let's be honest how many people were talking about or honestly thinking about watching Gone With The Wind before this hit the headline. The odds are HBO's public removal drew exponentially more attention to the title. I mean at a point today I wanted to revisit this movie which I have on bluray just collecting dust to see what is so offensive. I mean it was supposed to be offensive.

    Gone with the Wind needs no explanation. The book understood itself when it was written. The character of Ashley Wilkes is the discussion, the contradiction, the inner and outer struggles of slavery.

    I would say pull it for good or keep it with messaging explaining the content prior to the start of the film

    The movie takes place during the Civil War, it depicts the time as accurate as possible as a film from the 1940's can. This is ridiculous, we can not hide or shy away from things in our past. This is a massive slippery slope. But I will say, the Looney Tunes decision is more BONE-HEADED than this. Either way I don't think it's a good idea at all.

    I think its temporary removal has caused more damage and division.
    The sentiment is correct but it should have been handled in more low key way and maybe just adding something at the beginning without temporary removal.
    The amount of negativity flowing around as a result is prolonging and creating more darkness.
    What a year 2020 has turned out to be.

    Having a disclaimer is giving into the "I'm not educated" culture soaring in the world now. For people who know ANYTHING about history would know the movie is a product of its own time and not be bothered by it, because it does not depict what is now, but what was then. Altering the movie would be denying history, having a disclaimer is assuming the viewers don't know history.

    • @GeeVanderplas
      @GeeVanderplas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The movie isn't simply depicting what was then, it is depicting a 30s Hollywood version of what was then. That is a bit more complex to digest, especially if the audience is not so well educated. Sad truth is, many people don't know history that well, and they're never gonna know if no-one is teaching them, so why not let the movie be educational by adding a discussion?

    • @kpcntry

      This action is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. No child is going to choose to watch this movie; Therefore there is no need for such a disclaimer. Anyone with two brain cells knows that a movie made decades ago is not going to reflect the current culture. Just more dumbing down of the human race.

    • @GeeVanderplas
      @GeeVanderplas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kpcntry I think it's the other way round. The human race as a whole is already dumbed down severely (due to poor education, rampant anti-intellectualism and science denial), so disclaimers like this become a necessity...

    Sure, Gone with the Wind has a lot of outdated themes in the film and can be offensive to people, but it is still an important film in cinematic history. It’s perfectly fine if they added a disclaimer to understand the past and an important reminder to our bad experiences in United States history.

But I most ask is this really the only movie they did this with? There gotta be more old movies they got on HBO or are they only highly praised movies allowed if they are made before the 60´s?

    This movie is not racist it just shows a time period that many other movies show too BUT it shows another side of that period. It shows a servant (slave) having a sort of friendship and even a maternal love for her master's daughter (and it's not even the core story of the movie at all). The movie does not tell that slavery is okay (most characters in this movie DO believe it's okay though... sure...and it ends bad for them anyway.) it shows what happens between human beings that are close. Very often in the movie the audience understand that Mammy is the voice of reason and Scarlett is just a spoiled brat that have things to learn. There is absolutely no negative message in GWTW that I can remember. There's just an awful context. If anything this movie made more for black people in Hollywood than anything else. This makes HBO executives look stupids and ignorants about what is cinema.

    I do have a issue with this. I don't think that a stream platform is responsible for the content of a film based on the historical events that occurred in the past.
    Of course that raisism is bad, but everybody can come to that same conclusion by them selfs. You can put those typicall warnings about violence or sensitive content, that's fine by me. But I don't like that a company feels entitled to say the audience the way they should think. They are making a big issue about something that is not. Why, nearly 80 years after, is necessary to do this?
