A quick thing: I actually have some interesting marketing pictures of an in-development Disney World (It was a marketing thing between Disney and Eastern Airlines), promoting both Disney World and the airline. I got them with my dad in an auction, I could send you the pictures if you're interested? Just thought they would be cool, considering the video!

It's certainly unlikely it's directly endorsing an ideology like; say; a lot of the leftist TH-camrs I like. And, of course, you gotta make money even if your ideology is anticapitalist in this hellscape.
But, I've always been a proponent of the idea that a creator's views tend to leak out into their work in terms of themes, and I'll say that the project of Defunctland as a whole seems more leftist than it isn't.
If only because of how by its very nature it treats those things discarded by capital as art, and looks at the roles the battles between capital and labor and capital's role in ultimately destroying these works of art.
I hold no love for Adorno's role in media critique, and part of that is because I think anticapitalism is much better sold by virtue of capitalism destroying/burying what good the laborers under it create.
IE, less "Capitalism creates garbage I hate like jazz and Donald Duck" and more "Capitalism killed practical creature effects in film" and, more relevantly, "Capitalism killed beautiful works of rideable art and replaced them with SCREENS!"

Back then our family was doing well, we were saving up to move out of a rather uncomfortable living situation, he'd even started putting a small bit aside to help pay for my college...and I wasn't even out of elementary school! Then Eastern went down and our lives were changed forever.
We barely kept our financial heads above water. My mom, who had up to that point been a stay-at-home mom, took on a job to help make ends me. When Eastern was running, we received discounts on air fair that allowed us to fly down to Florida and visit my grandparents often...when they went down, we had to drive, which took longer and cost more. It took us decades to get back to the level of financial stability that Eastern had given us, and by the time it did...well, that's more of a personal story.

It is truly impressive how great Eastern was to their employees even despite all of their labor disputes. My grandfather worked for Eastern for 40 years as an Air Traffic control guy and was able to retire in the 80's somehow dodging all of the layoffs of the time. His pension and accrued savings were so incredible they lasted my grandparents 30+ years with ample savings left after he passed, even despite his gambling addiction. That's sort of financial prosperity is simply not possible in our modern economy and it's a god damned shame.

Same situation happened to my uncle when TWA was floundering. He started working there right out of high school, never went to college. But they paid well enough that he was able to afford a house, and set about for the next decade or so working on paying it off using the comfortable salary he was making... then, surprise, TWA is over. He had to struggle for a long time working HVAC maintenance service calls, electrical work, odd stuff like that. He was able to keep the house, fortunately, and eventually find worthwhile pay at a good, steady job, but man, it could have been close. People on top don't realize how their petty fuckery over dollars and cents translates to the real-life struggle of people on the bottom. :(

Wow! I have to hand it to you. While I enjoy the vids that focus mainly on the amusement side of things, this video might be my favorite so far. Being born, raised and still live in Columbus, I am very familiar with the Rickenbacker name. I live about twenty minutes from the Rickenbacker Airport so Eddie's history is well known in these parts. To make this video even more personal, my first time flying was on Eastern (probably around '78) to Orlando for my very first visit to WDW. Due to my work schedule, I fly many times a year for work. There isn't a time on any of the number of flights I have taken over the years where I don't think about that first flight I took on Eastern when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories!

Your comment got me remembering a flight when I was 7. It wasn't my first but it was my first traveling alone. There was a delay due to some maintenance so the captain, who had seen me looking into the cockpit when I boarded, found me and invited me to come see the cockpit. I was blown away by the sheer magnitude of gages, switchs, and buttons there were and that anyone could remember all of them. He pointed out several systems, naming them and explaining what they were for. He even let me sit in his seat with his hat and headset on my head. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Then it got better. When we landed we were delayed again. The captain brought me back to the cockpit and said "let's see what kind of student you are". He pointed to different systems and I had to name each and explain the function. Happy to say I passed. Lol lol.... I earned 2 pairs of wings and high praise from the flight crew. Even today, 40 yrs later, whenever I board a plane I still look at the cockpit and remember that Captain.

@@jackycook64 Thank you for sharing your story. I can understand why that moment was one you haven't forgotten. Some of the most memorable moments in my life involve aviation in some way. It could be a long trip to Japan, or flying over incredible scenery, or even jumping out of planes for fun. Life would be a lot less interesting if it wasn't for the incredible pilots who get us to places quickly and are willing to go the extra mile to make people like yourself happy.
