@SirToadsalott There are a few aspects of why this video is incorrect. Palms and dorsal hands are not scrubbed before the fingers. Fingers are divided into four planes each. Forearms are not split into thirds, split into half. Wash sequence is hand, other hand, forearm, and other forearm. So far it isn't horrible, but I haven't finished watching the whole video yet. But there are two recommended methods; timed and counted strokes.

Wow . . . I don't know when I first started searching for "scrubbing for operation" but it was at least five years ago . . . and now I finally find this! I'm not going to bother with the others in my search, but what I'd love to see is an explanation of WHY it's necessary to perform each step; in other words, the *rationale* behind each one. For instance, why scrub the upper arm? I get that flakes of skin might shed from these regions and contaminate the sterile area, but still, I'd love to hear the precise rationale behind each of these steps, which obviously have been developed over centuries, so must have received much scrutiny from many, many doctors (and nurses!! The "First Officers" of the OR!).
Anyway, many thanks for this great video! I have to go see how the appendectomy on my cat is going.

I do have to agree with many comments below, since this is an instructional video, and you are not using the water to rinse during the scrub, turn that off for the video while doing the scrub. I live and work in California and we cannot wast that much water, especially when it is to no benefit.
Ultimately, you are rinsing with non-sterile water, yes, but you are not completely washing off the soap, so some residual antibacterial effects will remain. Doing a thorough scrub at the beginning of the day, usually before you go to report, will expedite this as the day goes on. Then you can used the Avagard product subsequently. Also, be VERY gentle with scrubbing as this will, as some have commented, harm your hands by drying them out. Then, technically, with non-intact skin, you shouldn't be scrubbed in. Remember you are protecting yourself as well as your patient and do double glove when you scrub in. Those are my comments after working in perioperative care, including scrubbing for many of those 30+ years. Just be conscientious and practice surgical conscience.

If while using the abrasive side for your nails, the polish chips, will you have to remove the acrylics (if present) or the polish before restarting the hand washing? It sounds time consuming for an operation to have to add that to the wait time. The hospital my roommate works at requires nubs for nails and no acrylics to begin with so it's got me curious.

No, we do not. Usually once we have started the inital scrub after the nail picking and get a good lather of the sponge and it it is wet enough, you can use your knee to shut off the water while doing each plane and stroke. It saves water. It's all preference, though.

    • @cruelllangelll

OHM-968692 they wash their hands differently thorough the day, and letting water just run is better because you won’t touch the contaminated soap buds again.
