I know this was posted 5 years ago but I just stumbled onto it today. A resonator is really designed to reduce droning and unwanted interior cabin engine/exhaust noises.
I have a Chevy Venture van, that had the muffler that was rusted out, and beyond repair, and I had a resonator kicking around in the garden shed, and put the resonator in the place of the muffler, with some welding of joiners, and it sounds pretty good, it's got the low deep grumbling sound at idle and at low rpms, and gets louder as rpms increase, but at the same time it's not unbearably loud.
Love my electronic cutouts, my 6 liter V8 is limo quiet with valves shut, press the button, valve opens, instant racing corvette sound. Can open part way for a sound in between.
From my experience, for a resonator to do its job, it needs internal pressure, which means having the right diameter in accordance to the engine size, if the pipe size is too large, nothing other than a chambered muffler would work, and even that might drone a lot
I got a summit pump that’s loud like that and my exhaust doesn’t drown it out much, just bought an edelbrock quiet flow 122GPH and a vibrant resonator hoping the combo helps a bit
True, a muffler would help to lower exhaust noise at all levels. Only reason why I didn't go with a true muffler, is that it has walls and chambers that redirect exhaust flow and cause back pressure/restriction. My goal was to make the exhuast as free flowing and quiet as possible, but ever since the GSC S1 cams went in on the new 2JZ, the engine is much louder at idle.
It is definitely quieter, and resonators need a few weeks to breakin. The only thing is I would have liked it sticks out more from the back of the bumper, now it looks as if it has a missing section of the body kit, with a huge hole.
My mazda had no muffler and was too loud(neighbors) when idling. I got rid of the stock resonator and replaced with a vibrant and it was noticeably quieter when idling. Could no longer here it from inside the house. Now im about to do the same thing to my 97 z28, no muffler and 2 vibrant resonators if I can get them to fit. I guarantee you it's going be more quiet after I do this next week.
@@woooose did adding a second UQ res quiet it down further? I noticed the same on my Mazda, 2.5" cat back no muffler with stock res (directly after cat), replaced stock res with UQ res and it was noticeably deeper and slightly quieter. I'd love to hear your results!!
Any changes you make to the exhaust will have little to no effect on sound the closer it is to the end of said exhaust. However, if you make a change to the exhaust at its very beginning (Like the headers), then you will see a larger effect occur. For example: Removing the muffler at the end of your exhaust will not have anywhere near as much of an effect on sound as replacing the stock manifold/precat with open headers.
Cool car / build!! I have the same issue on my 2019 5.0 F150, I just built a dual 3" exhaust after the catted headers, and I'm finding it a little too loud when starting it at 6am to go to work, and don't want to stir the neighbors, and searched out these Vibrant ultra quiets and found this video.
Thanks man! Since you have cats, I’m sure these ultra quiet resonators will tame the noise. My 240 was almost stock sounding from the outside when rolling. Until I hit boost and cracked the wastegate.
Damn your just in walnut creek.... You still have the S14?? Would be great to meet up at Track day.... I will be doing more SpeedSF stuff with Patrick this year
I don’t have the S14 anymore, unfortunately. I currently have an E46, that needs a lot of work before it gets on track. Might get something else, just so I can get back on the track sooner.
How accurate is the phone app vs a dedicated db measuring device? I think he should have made a. Comparison between the two, should have mounted it further upstream I think though...
I don’t think the phone measures too accurate tbh. But I had a few other resonators in the car already lol. From the outside the car sounded pretty quiet until the wastegate cracked. Inside the cabin, car was loud regardless 😂
In Canada, Ontario, the cops here don't bother you, as long as it's not unbearably too loud. I do see / hear cars with mufflers that are noticiably louder than stock muffler, but not unbearably too loud.
The welder is a Lincoln 175HD, you can buy a Lincoln 180HD from Home Depot or Lowe’s. The new Vulcan welders from Harbor freight are pretty good though, a few of my buddies have them and they lay down some excellent welds.
This was also the 3rd one lol. It did quiet down the car on the highway from outside the car though. It sounded like a hybrid until the wastegate cracked open. Inside the car and idling didn’t change much of anything though lol.
So my question is can one of these replace a stock resonator on a car note: my car is a 04 Altima 2.5 just a daily driver my friend bought this part and just gifted it to me not sure if he's correct that o can just have some one weld it on to replace my broken stock one some one please advice if this is correct ? If not I'll just buy a direct fit replacement to the broken one and sell off the one he gave me also note he gave me a vibrant resonator
Bro you have no power steering? Me neither. It sucks but tbh I’ve gotten so used to it now that I’m not even investing in a new rack. I just keep buying performance parts😂
Hey bro if that’s a resonator why did you make it as a muffler? Can you use resonator as a muffler? Im asking this because the shop that i went to, installed this as my muffler on my accord 2.0.
It's hilarious how many people say mufflers are too restrictive when people have show on a dyno that you can take the muffler off a car and you MIGHT gain 2-3hp even with a v8. So if you want to be able to hear yourself think, just put a flowmaster or dynomax on there with a little packing and it will only rob you of a few ponies and you'll actually be able to hear the radio. If it's a racecar why do you have mufflers at all lol, gut it and open pipe it.
I didn’t want any restriction lol. They actually made the car very quiet from the outside. Inside the car, with all the solid mounts and gutted interior it was still loud though.
I have 2 others located further up the exhaust towards the down pipe. This is the 3rd resonator on a 3in custom turbo back exhaust. Pretty sure the cams are to blame for the car being loud at idle. I would need a true muffler in order to combat the noise, but I didn't wish to add restriction. Cruising at speed, the car is very quiet.
Resonators are overrated, they really don't do much. I have tried several so called resonators on different setups and to be honest, to me it was a waste of time and money. Some resonators work a bit better but it all depends on construction, pipe size, length, so on and so for. The J pipe configuration might do something for your car , but your exhaust will look like a plumbing job. Just my 1 cent cuz I owe the other cent to the IRS!
I'm no expert but where you installed it is not really proper. You need to install a muffler in that spot, resonator goes deeper inside somewhere in the middle section. Get a muffler and replace it
This is the 3rd one lol. The other proper locations already have resonators. But you’re right, a muffler would have been better in this location. This resonator actually quieted down the car a lot from the outside, on the highway other people couldn’t hear much until the wastegate opened. Inside the car was like the same 😂
All that work just to open a hood I think even thieves would have work cut out for them. Shit there must really be some people willing to run up after this car😂

This is actually very disappointing. I was looking into buy this resonator for my sti since my bellmouth dp and nur spec cbe make the car pretty loud. Guess I'll keep shopping. Great video though
Hello yeah that’s what’s up. For me it’s like I might just get a muffler to get more rumble outta me. I’m too raspy at high rpm. I wanted more of my I5 sound.
Complaining about exhaust and rumble in cabin but your neighbor's can still hear your fuel pumps lol.
I know this was posted 5 years ago but I just stumbled onto it today. A resonator is really designed to reduce droning and unwanted interior cabin engine/exhaust noises.
Decibel meter is probably picking up the fuel pump noise. 😂
You’re probably right, those things were loud. The car was just loud in general lol

It's more about changing the frequency and removing drone than the db levels
I think decibel metre will give you overall volume of the exhaust but what you get from the resonator I think it cut out the high frequency of noise.
From my experience, for a resonator to do its job, it needs internal pressure, which means having the right diameter in accordance to the engine size, if the pipe size is too large, nothing other than a chambered muffler would work, and even that might drone a lot
You need to mount it as far up the system as possible to be more efficient.
I got a summit pump that’s loud like that and my exhaust doesn’t drown it out much, just bought an edelbrock quiet flow 122GPH and a vibrant resonator hoping the combo helps a bit
Don’t resonators work more for drone? Maybe it’s quieter when the rpm is a bit higher. Otherwise I think a muffler would be the way to go
True, a muffler would help to lower exhaust noise at all levels. The only thing is I would have liked it sticks out more from the back of the bumper, now it looks as if it has a missing section of the body kit, with a huge hole.
Mufflers muffle (quiet down the sound), resonators cut out drone/rasp. Pretty straight forward, no?

Instead of welding, can good exhaust clamps be used?
Should be fine just be cautious about possible week spots

The welder is a Lincoln 175HD, you can buy a Lincoln 180HD from Home Depot or Lowe’s. The new Vulcan welders from Harbor freight are pretty good though, a few of my buddies have them and they lay down some excellent welds.
Resonators only work when put in the front half of the exhaust.
This was also the 3rd one lol. It did quiet down the car on the highway from outside the car though. It sounded like a hybrid until the wastegate cracked open. Inside the car and idling didn’t change much of anything though lol.
Which app or website do you go to for the sound decibles?
I have a q50 and have test pipes and notice a rattle rasp on my invidia resonators can this help ?
It’ll definitely make it sounder smoother and take out most of the rasp.
Did you use ss wedling wire?
That I did! The whole exhaust is stainless. Wasn’t cheap to build lol.
THIS MAN HAS KEY HOOD PINS I AM DONE. All safety measures so someone doesn’t take my fucking supra under the hood😂😂😂
Someone should make a resonator lined with those soundproofing triangles the whole length of it. They would probably kill any drone at least.
what kind of welder are you using?
Lincoln 175HD with 100% C02
Resonators change tone and drone remove rasp don’t change volume really you need a muffler for that

How much does it way aprox? I need to add something to my mustang gt (gonna have to use 2) but need to be quieter. Thx!
It’s fairly hefty, I’d say around 10lbs. Depends on how long of a resonator you get and diameter. These things are thicc lol.
