Is it like a "hike" or a "climb" though?
The moment you need ropes, i don't think it's a "hike" anymore...

You're right. That's no hike that's rock climbing.

There are cables on Half Dome in Yosemite NP and it is considered a hike.
I've seen pics of the knotted rope used on this trail.
Trust your life to a rope you or your party did NOT set? 🤔

    • @gantz4u
      @gantz4u 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@dgronzega8073 Sounds like you shouldnt set ropes and instead set bolt hangers for people to clip into with their own ropes and climbing gear. I guess thats when a hike becomes rock climbing. Hanging a rope gives a false sense of "this is a smart thing to do and totally not a rock climbing thing you didnt bring gear for"

I think I've done Olomana around 31 times since December 2020. Not every time is a peak 3 time. Just this Tuesday I was up there alone and began the climb down Paku'i, but climbed right back up and relaxed on the hammock, something wasn't sitting well with me, I had hesitation that day that I rarely have. Learning to listen to your gut, as May said, it will save you. We all have that intuition, please don't ignore it. Olomana has my utmost respect and fear, I love that mountain. So sorry for this man and his family, this really could be any one of us, on any day.

Oh man. Yeah I’ve been on this hike before. It’s definitely not a safe hike. Even going up the first peak is dangerous.

The ones that lose their lives by risking their lives hiking the trail, I see it as nature's way of weeding out the gene pool of stupid people.

I only did the first peak of Olomana (2013) and near the top of the first peak is totally rock scrambling. I thought it was fun, but then again I'm an avid rock and ice climber. Experienced hiker and experienced rock scrambler are not the same thing.

Olomana trail is not treacherous if you don’t go past the first peak. Like she said, use your gut instinct, common sense, and it always depends on recent and present weather conditions.

I did this hike the day after this incident. We only did the first peak and even that was sketchy for us. Take your time and go slow if you do this one people. Beautiful views, but dangerous.

Why the Hawaiian had a KAPU SYSTEM has nothing to do with keeping the people from enjoying life be it mauka or makai ! In those days only certain ones gathered certain places you weren’t walking around for a hike or exercising, life kept you in shape . Kahuna was often in the very places these people are going and getting hurt, praying for the people or in thanks giving ! Rules of the ancient often apply for all time !

When I was young and foolishly invincible my husband and I would hike the first peak. That was enough.

Requiring an emergency helicopter about once a week should be a hint. Avoid this hike. There are many safe hikes in Oahu.

When one is willing to risk their lives doing that and end up falling to their death, get no sympathy from me. I do however have sympathy for their loved ones, though.

We used to cut the ropes off to prevent novice hikers from hurting themselves....but someone always put it back....why!?
Even the ropes backside of 3rd peak....like a knife edge

You might not like what I say, and whether you agree or not... think like an American in Hawaii and Hawaii will remind you that you are not in America. Thats why they tell you to stay on marked trails. Respect the land here or just be another foreigner who bites the dust while on vacation/visit in Hawaii. Its been one insult after another to our land, our people, and our culture. Theres nothing to cry about...he shouldnt have been there in the first place. Thats the result of disrespecting the aina, and thinking you can. The Aina will answer back. Dont expect hospitality...just the hospital. I am for my Hawaii. Maika'i Mama Hawaii... Imua!! The Kingdom Of Hawaii lives... Ku Kanaka, e Aloha Aina!
