I think the lasting appeal behind Spyro the Dragon is a mixture of beautiful scenery (Spyro was among the first video games to utilize LOD, and only used render fog in the swampy levels where you would expect a more humid environment), a memorable soundtrack, and simplicity of gameplay. Even as an adult, it's one of my favorite games to play whenever I'm feeling sick or stressed, and I just want to relax for a while.
The original PlayStation was my first ever console, and I was hopelessly obsessed with Spyro the Dragon. By today's gaming standards, it might seem dated and simple, but back then, it had cutting-edge graphics and fun and memorable platform levels. Ice Cavern, Wizard Peak, Tree Tops, and Dark Passage are my absolute favourites. I didn't really like the Reignited trilogy. Whilst the visuals were spectacular, and the games remained faithful to the originals, I didn't like the voice acting, redesign of everything, and cartoony animations. They really took away the nostalgia for me.
Yes, now the game looks outdated, but I remember back then that I was so amazed how good it looks. Very few games visuals that good on PS1. Maybe games like Crash 3, Ridge Racer Type 4 or Vargrant Story that pushed the graphic department very far. Well, I like Reignited Trilogy even though cartoony parts could be slightly diminished. I wanted it to be as faithful as possible when it comes to gameplay, and I've got it :D
I will forever stand by the fact that Spyro 2 was the only really good spyro game, 3 was okay but i didnt feel that much for it because of the *Not playing as Spyro* bits
@@MoonTurky in some circumstances I would agree with you. Ryptos rage is arguably better, but I guess that nostalgia is getting better of me. And I've played the first one first, so... but yeah, I agree about the 3rd one. It had too much sidetracking with additional characters and content
Spyro is probably the first platformer I 100%-ed. Or as is the case for the Reignited Trilogy, 337%-ed. Only things I'm consistently bad at and get frustrated with are the flight sections and Tree Tops. Spyro was also the first game I got when I bought a Switch a few years ago.
