Is the Bearvault 475 comfortable to carry in a 40 liter backpack?

A couple options.. to make more room in the canister, put all 6 Peak meals in ziplock freezer bags.. and take 1 Peak package to cook them all in.
As for top heavy bear can - put all your food in an actual flexible food bag to keep in your pack. Keep the empty canister on top. Just fill it at night at camp ✅

Great tip! I have thought about the one package to cook in, but worried about keeping it clean. Have you done this before and did it work for you? There is no doubt the freeze dried meal packages are very bulky and stiff; however, I do not really want to cook in a freezer bag (I worry about the plastic getting into the food), so this seems like a great compromise. Thanks for the tip and take care.

@@PapaBoiOutdoors I typically cook in the freezer bag itself (make sure it's a freezer bag as they are a little thicker). That can handle the boiling water, I've never had issue with melting. But then again, who knows what that boiling water is releasing into your food off the surface of those bags, so you have me a little worried now. :D

If you go on a long test hike with the full weight food canister, that will tell you. Personally, I would put 15lbs of water (maybe 2 gallons worth) in ziplocks, place it in the BV and try it out. If things aren't working out, you can bail by dumping the water weight.
I went with the original Garcia (worked fine in a 42L pack) and nowadays the BV 250

I will be trying this out on longer hikes soon. Do you mean to use the water instead of the food I used? Thanks for the ideas. Take care.
