The Calvary draw works well for a straight drop holster with a retention strap. Being a lefty I had to carry like that a time or two early in my LE career with left handed holsters not being common. As you said - it's practice. Another thing I learned was to draw from the right and palm to the left. Good video. You got me hankering for more.

Hey Santee! Unlike Hollywood's gritty glamorizing of the Old West I believe the general rule of thumb back then was never carry a gun if you were hesitant to use it when someone threatened your life. If you drew on a man (or a woman) you better be prepared to shoot first and ask questions (if possible) later on! Thanks for another great video. Take care & God bless!

My late father was a Border Patrol man in the 1930's through the late 40's. He was a south paw, and carried a Tom Three Persons holster for his Colt .45 New Service 5 & 1/2 inch revolver. The holster was made by S.D. Meyers of El Paso, Texas. It rode high on his left hip, and had a back rake, if I've got the words right. Muzzle pointed to the back a bit.

Hardin was actually reported to have carried a pair of Colt Lightnings in his trouser pockets, muzzles up and butts forward. His draw technique was to pinch the barrels between his finger & thumb, pull the pistols up and out of the pockets, then toss them over and catch them by the handles. And supposedly, he could do this VERY quickly. (leather lining in the pockets would certainly have helped.) Definitely would get you a safety disqualification in ANY shooting event today... but I suppose the old west gunfighters weren't quite as concerned about such things as we are, huh?

    • @ArizonaGhostriders

    • @DavidSmith-ss1cg

Actually, the whole idea of a duel - with 2 men facing off - is a Hollywood invention. A speed draw isn't how you'd want to dependably end the life of an opponent. Shooting them in the back - with a shotgun - is more of a "slam dunk" than all of the methods seen in this video.
However, the chance of catching your front sight on yore britches and blowing your junk away is actually more likely. Holsters were not common, and to be able to perform a speed draw takes practice; LOTS of practice - and you have to keep up the practice. The regular cowboy had other stuff to do besides rescue Hollywood's arse. Believe Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" over a Roy Rogers or a Hopalong Cassidy movie. Fortune passes everywhere.

The strong side carry should provably be split into 2 different types, 3 o'clock and 2 o'clock (i.e. OWB appendix carry.) The man at the far right at 00:17 and the the guy on the left, opposite Billy the Kid, at 00:36 are carrying this way. Form follows function. What's old is new again. Also, With the cavalry carry method, this is a function of having the option of duel wielding a saber in the right hand, and a pistol in the left when dismounted. The result is you can easily draw with either hand if necessary.

I live at Deadwood about a mile from where Hickock is buried. I have heard that the Army used the cavalry draw for its troopers as it would prevent the soldier from shooting his own horse in the head. Cowboys often wore their revolvers butt forward in a cross-draw. The few who actually wore two guns considered the second gun to be a backup and not for simultaneous fire. And the low-slung buscadero rigs were an invention of Hollywood in the 1920s and were not a part of the Old West. Costner's movie "Wyatt Earp" was good, but it was a major error to have him wear a buscadero outfit as such was unknown to Earp or anyone else in the Old West of the day. The guns were worn high on the hip and later movies have shown the gunbelts and holsters correctly.

One explanation I'd heard from a black powder shooter, was on a single shot flintlock/percussion pistol, keeping gun butt forward on right hip better protected lock work from elements. He referred to paintings and sketches of armed people from that era. Habits, techniques may have evolved in to revolver/cartridge era.

fastest draw I've ever seen was like 50 years ago. the guy wore his pistol at about belt buckle position, nealy straight across, with just a little tilt. They did not have the high tech timing they do now back then, but he could draw, cock and fire his pistol, even hitting the balloon target with a wax bullet, in less time than a trained stunt man could simply pull the trigger on a cocked gun. I'm sure the time would have been as fast or faster than anything seen today, if the timing mechanisms were available. They only had analog back then, and all we could tell was he could draw cock and fire and reholster before a second ticked off the clock.

One great historical fact is most didn’t wear a holster. They wore them for photos n such to be fancy but most of the time their pistol or pistols stayed in their saddle bags. They mostly used a rifle. When they would go into say a town they’d mostly just stick a pistol in their belt. Think about it. Makes perfect sense. If u gotta choice to use a rifle or pistol out on the range or in the mountains, ur gonna use a rifle. Now when u go into a town ur still gonna use ur rifle but you’ll stick a pistol in ur belt. Close range. I’d say some wore those rigs but most didn’t. I know if I was alive back then I wouldn’t want anyone to know I was packing. Same as today.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders

Many towns had an ordinance about guns and concealment was key if you feared for your life. Historical photo evidence shows us men wearing holsters at their jobs or in town (and not just a studio shot), so we know they were worn. Also, museums have many examples of gunleather from the era.
The rifle was definitely a plus for the outdoorsman.

Began doing a bit of gold prospecting in the Bradshaw Mtns and around the KOFA NWF areas, often camping out for a week at a time. GREAT memories. Anyway, I often carried a Uberti Remington Army .44. C&B in a flap holster, grip butt to the rear on my strong(right) side. I quickly learned that the gun was constantly in my way while dry and wet panning. So I moved the holster to the left side, butt forward. PERFECT!! The gun was out of the way, yet could be quickly accessed if needed. In looking at historical photos of 49'ers and later prospectors in the territories of NV, MT, CO, AZ, etc, I noticed that nearly all had their handguns butt forward on the hip! I carried mine in holsters for over 40yrs, butts backward, like mine lol, Butt now, I carry them like he did, in my waste band which is belted, butts forward. For casual carry with no mayhem inpending, I carry them with barrels straight down. When however I find I may be obliged to use them, I carry them at a 45o angle. Either way works. There is historical evidence (primarily from Hickock) where guns were carried in the waistband or in his case, tucked into a sash. The reversed butts had problems BUT, if you dropped or emptied your strong side revolver, you could more easily draw the weapon on your opposite hip with your strong hand. Plus if your strong side hand got restrained or wounded, you could use the weak side hand to draw a reversed butt revolver from either hip without having to reach around your back. The fastest reload, especially when most revolvers were still cap and ball, was a second weapon. As for sitting in chairs, drawing pistols carried with the butts reversed was easier than getting a hand down between your hip and the arms of a chair and drawing it backward into the back of a chair. Hickock and Holliday were both gamblers...more likely to find themselves in a situation while seated. Of course, the same reasons lead to the development of shoulder holsters...plus it was easier to conceal a handgun under a coat if it was in a shoulder holster, especially if it was a smaller piece. (Somehow the image of a Walker Colt in a shoulder holster just...well, it's just scary and a bit silly.)

I do! Interesting how all the dogs disappear. Well, every animal, really.

great vid, thanks so much ! never even considered appendix carry myself ha ha ha.... interesting fact about lining the pockets with leather to get the guns out quicker... that's the exact reason I pocket carry my LCR with kydex… in and out of the pocket super easy, and with the proper hook, the gun slips in and out of the kydex, leaving the holster in the pocket.

      Cool kydex carry!

It was probably at least as much to keep the guns from ripping , or prematurely wearing through the pockets .

When that clip of Laurel and Hardy came on with Stan laughing at your misfortune, I busted out loud. Also, that lining your pocket thing sounds like a great idea. My gun sights keep wearing holes in my pockets.

I just stuffed some in to show, but sewing them in would be no problem.

0:36)The picture of William Henry McCarty, Junior, AKA Billy the Kid, is a mirror image photo. He was right handed. Dr. John Holliday & ( Dodge City)Ford County Sheriff William Masterson used the cross draw.

It's reversed because it's a Tintype, or Ambrotype.

Awesome video, I love the way you explain things with comedy but you still get that point across... I have always had that same question about the two guns, I felt it might be more Hollywood then old west but wasn't sure... 🐻

Glad you liked it. In many larger towns, they outlawed the wearing of guns...so concealing one of those big hoglegs was tough enough.

Happy Thanksgiving to you. Your video just came across my page this morning. I am actually thinking of getting a cross Holster for my rig. As you can tell I am watching this episode Thanksgiving morning. I am getting ready to go to the shelter to help out with the dogs. Really good information my friend. Thank you see you in the next video

If I don't, he'll go to the drive-through at Burger King. Again.
That's never a good thing for a fast food restaurant.
